Development on the new StarCraft title reportedly first began in 2022.

Full-scale development began in 2024 following the cancellation of Blizzard's Project Odyssey. At the time, it was being developed as a live-service open-world shooter set in the StarCraft universe.

The game was originally targeting a release in either the second half of 2027 or spring 2028.

After the new Xbox CEO played the game, a decision was made to rework the project with a much stronger focus on the single-player experience. As a result, the release has reportedly been pushed back to 2030.

The game is also being reworked to feature co-op similar to Far Cry.

Sebastian Stępień, a former CDPR narrative writer and Cyberpunk director, was involved with the project during his time at Blizzard.

Following the End War, peace lasted for more than 50 years, but the situation remained extremely unstable beneath the surface.

With humanity finally experiencing a prolonged period of peace, the Terran population more than tripled.

This eventually triggered a massive food crisis across the Koprulu Sector.

Large numbers of humans began expanding beyond the territories established under existing treaties, creating new settlements wherever they could.

Inevitably, these settlements began encroaching on Zerg and Protoss territory.
>>
In an effort to uphold the treaties, Valerian began detaining humans who crossed into Zerg and Protoss territory. He also refused to intervene when civilians who had entered those territories were attacked by Zerg or Protoss forces defending their borders.

These policies caused Valerian's approval ratings to steadily collapse. Eventually, a movement known as the New Sons of Korhal emerged, embracing the ideology of Arcturus Mengsk and preaching a "Dominion First" agenda.

Valerian was ultimately removed from power 20 years before the events of the game, and the New Sons of Korhal now control the Terran Dominion.

Faced with massive overpopulation and a worsening food crisis across the sector, the Dominion launches a new war against the Zerg and Protoss.

The player knows absolutely none of this political background at the beginning of the game.

The protagonist is an unnamed young man in his 20s from a rural backwater. Influenced by Dominion propaganda and simply trying to make a living, he enlists as a Dominion Marine.

During the early and middle portions of the game, the player primarily fights desperate, life-or-death battles against the Zerg and Protoss.

>encroaching on Zerg territory
Aren't they just mindless bugs?

As his comrades keep dying seemingly for no reason, the protagonist begins questioning what he's been told. They're supposedly fighting to "defend the Dominion," yet the overwhelming majority of their missions are offensive assaults.

During a mission on Tarsonis, the protagonist discovers the truth about the New Sons of Korhal and learns what Raynor's Raiders actually did in the past.

From the midpoint onward, after uncovering the truth, the player begins learning about the legend of Jim Raynor.

Depending on the player's actions throughout the early and mid-game, various NPCs will eventually help the protagonist become a new Jim Raynor-like figure.

In the mid-to-late game, the Dominion becomes the player's primary enemy. However, the player will also clash with Zerg and Protoss forces as they launch their own counteroffensives against the Dominion.

Because the project was originally designed as a live-service game, the late-game was built around giving players across the world the feeling that they were collectively participating in a new revolutionary movement against the Dominion.

Some of these late-game elements may change now that the project is being reworked into a more single-player-focused game.

Yeah, and they should be trying to spread all the time, because they're bugs. They wouldn't even know what a treaty is.
