Are there any games that have an atmosphere like Max Payne? It's kind of like neo-noir, but very grimy too.
The closest thing to it that I can think of would be the Deus Ex series. E.g you wear a trench coat and explore a city.
>>
Watch Dogs 1
>>
Freedom fighters is kinda close, especially towards the last few missions of the game

Hitman Contracts. Blood Money too but a much lesser extent.

Aesthetically I thought El Paso Elsewhere was getting somewhere.
Gameplay wise it is fucking dogshit and I hate the developer so much for making something like this.

AI can't create, only distillate. You should know that by now.

This is a good recommendation

The urban missions of the early splinter cell games. Much more distant but Vampires Bloodlines also hits the city at night feeling.
It's very much a 2000-2005 thing. Nobody does it anymore.
>>
Im hyped for the Max Payne remake

For all the shit people give DE for being communist wank, it has a pretty amazing atmosphere. Getting drunk as fuck and playing in the dead of winter to fully immerse yourself makes it a really great experience.

It's sad how boring and stale modern society has become compared to the past. It feels like as the days go by everything just keeps getting worse and worse.

>>747547773
GTA III and IV do a decent job of capturing the grime of the big city. Condemned does too although that game is a bit more horror oriented.
>>
>>747556517
Nah, there are plenty of times where it looks rough - usually during the day since (like many old games) night time hides a lot of sins in 3d rendering.

Not very Max Payne gameplay-wise but THUG 1 had sinilar edge in its art direction. Very grimy and realisim focused levels, not really seen in any other Tony Hawk game. As a kid the game felt edgy and dangerous. Its hard to explain.

Crazy, I just finished it yesterday for the first time in 20 years. Great game ey.
But I am so glad that in 2 they let you keep shooting if you were lying on the ground, the amount of times Max gets up in 1 and just immediately gets shot got fucking annoying.
Also, much better overall weapon balance in 2.

Also, the writing in 3 was just crap I'm sorry. In my mind the canon ending is Dead On Arrival's ending in 2.

Second Sight
>>
>>747558556
I don’t see any similarities between the two, honestly.
>>
>>747557782
Not really. The enemies are very spongy and react fast to being shot at so it's one of those games where you inevitably take damage in most encounters and just work around it with health packs, gets frustrating pretty fast. But it has good AI for its time, since they wanted to make hiring thugs to help you a big part of the game. They can follow you into vents and jump between ledges, basically wherever you go they can follow you so you don't need to babysit your allies as much as other 90s games. And the atmosphere is good too. So in a way it's a neat game, but I just don't remember it being fun.

Clive Barker's Undying?
Not in the city sense, but in the dark and foreboding sense.
Similar engine too.

Getting Up (2006)
>>
>>747558728
2 is garbage and shouldn’t be considered canon by the fanbase
>>
>>747547773
Alan Wake 2 is worth it just for the cheesy monologues from Sam Lake.
>>
>>747554367
The people who shill against DE are almost all complete schizos or culture warriors too brainrotted to perceive the same reality as the rest of us. The game itself is good, with the possible exception of the ending, which is why they always move the argument to the devs or whatever other bullshit. They think they're doing the right thing, maybe, but really it's just sullying the legacy of one of the best VNs ever made.
>>
I wish I could wear a trench coat irl, that shit would be so cool… I could smoke a cigarette, bum it, put my sunglasses on, all while wearing a trench coat. But nope. That’s weird apparently. You must always wear brand approved t shirts to avoid and glares

Noir? no. If Deus Ex Hells Kitchen is what you're looking for i know an exact game (pic related) but it's shit so it's not even worth naming i suppose.
That being said maybe just try Carcer City from manhunt, condemned criminal origins, swat 4, The Warriors, Kingpin Life of Crime, Freedom Fighters, The Darkness, Cry of Fear, Project Crypt, Remorse the List etc. if you want grimey city environments.
>>
>>747559174
Oh yeah and Pyromaniac if you want another Cry of Fear clone.

Jawbreaker is another modern manhunt themed game. It's crap though.

If you wanted the name of that game that i originally refused to name it was Anne McCaffrey's Freedom: First Resistance. It's pretty bad and i can't tell you to do anything more than watch a youtube playthrough of it. Shits hard to run without crashing all the time even today.

(The Hunt / Traque / Chernaja Metka)

Apparently Pigface and Butchers Creek are Manhunt clones too. I haven't played them though.
>>
You have to understand that some games are incomparable. I really think MP1 is one of the few games that are truly 10/10 in every aspect
If you play a game, you shouldn't think "are there any other games like this?" because often times, there aren't. Gaming is relatively small compared to movies and shows so insane games are in smaller quantity.
>>
>>747561098
It seems like a lot of people prefer MP2 over 1 but I found 1 to be way better in pretty much every way but I also think I was playing MP2 with a bug that caused me to take double damage so it was extremely frustrating
>>
>>747558328
not really, first half is decent but the atmosphere is absolute kino

>>
>>747561161
MP1 is far better, I still dont know why MP2 is regarded so highly. Sam Lake not being the face already killed my immersion. Max being a depressed gloomy guy was annoying in MP2 also. He was like that in MP1 too but atleast he dropped some lines and was smiling here and there unlike MP2.
>>
>>747548337
This is the peak of atmosphere
>>
>>747547773
Wish we got a sin city game in this style
>>
>>747559174
Manhunt gets my vote

Game is gritty and great
>>
>>747562113
MP2 is pretty much an idiot plot. A lot of the conflict of the game wouldn't have happened if Max had told Bravura that Mona is still alive. Also there's the twist of Vlad being Woden's son. That aside I can't hate the game much; the physics when you shoot things up is too good. Not even MP3 can replicate it.
>>
>>747555512
>Grimy American city at night aesthetic
I notice the cutoff point of that visual fad in games was when L4D1 came out.
>>
>>747553843
Wonder what engine they'll use. Remedy has their own engine, but them using RAGE could've been cool.
