They famously put out their "save the game update" Riven Tides and it was a tiny map with very little lootable objects compared to the existing maps so players simply stopped loading in to that map. To access the first 6, you need a special key you get from other maps at random and to do a fetch quest while on the map. If you extract with a subroutine in your inventory, it it permanently recorded on your account. You need all 6 subroutines to access vault 7, which contains the final boss.

The lore you get from Cryo Archive is more explanation as to what went wrong and why. A compiler is the final boss of the Cryo Archive map but requires a very coordinated team to complete a lot of puzzles, beat out all the other teams and have a lot of keys prepared to reach it.
