normally when an RPG has no player agency, itemisation that is so primitive it boils down to "newer = better" and dialogue options that result in nothing we call it shit
unless it was made in japan then we call it a jRPG and quirks of the genre

That's why we created the terms jrpg and wrpg so that no one ever has to willing suffer through playing western garbage.

Ys is one of the few to get it right, classically. Cut out the chaff of immaterial RPG garbage and just make the numbers go up, focusing on gameplay and keeping cutscenes brief or at least skippable without concern. Shame that Falcom lost the plot around the late 2000s, but oh well.
