A Brethren Moon. When a Marker converts enough biomass on a planetoid it spreads to cover and take over the entire thing, transforming it into a celestial-sized Necromorph. They're the final phase of the Necromorph lifecycle, there's multiple of them, and Isaac fell into despair because the prospect of killing an entire moon is next to impossible.

>Isaac fell into despair because the prospect of killing an entire moon is next to impossible.
he fell into despair because he realised the reason he's survived the Ishimura up through to the end of DS3 Awakened is to be the arbiter of the Moons' arrival and lead them to Earth. He was their scout all along and never knew it until he and Carver got mogged by the moon in front of their cockpit.

(apparently Isaac survived into the planned script for 4 but would gradually take on a more antagonistic role until it was revealed to Ellie he was indeed absorbed at the end of DS3:Awakened and the Isaac she saw was just dementia from being so close to the moons.
Sounded kino honestly, Ellie being the one Isaac managed to save, concluding her arc similar to how he did -- but actually "winning".)

It's fucking easy to beat these things. That's the whole point.
The issue is that due to writing garbage the markers somehow turns the entirety of the human empire into total retards.
So instead of just air nuking these things they just let the moons and zombies kill them all.
Why?
>Uh the markers... uh messed with their brains so... uh... uh...they didn't know to... uhhh... you know...uh
>>
>>747561363
Brainlet, the Markers do influence humans yes but the state of Earth by the times the moon invade is due to two centuries of Unitologist infiltration on behalf of the Marker, along with them having sleeper cells in the highest echelon of EarthGov, not to mention both the resource wars making most people just yearn to die anyway and the fact that the SCAF and UCA actually interacted with the Markers even further back than that and just covered it up, so there were likely dozens of human descendents out there already tainted.

It's essentially all Spencer Mahad's fault that the moons weren't prepared for hundreds of years prior.
>>
In a universe with relativistic space travel I would have thought they could come up with a kinetic kill weapon that would obliterate a moon-sized object. IDK stick a shock point drive onto a lump of whatever and let that fucker rip.

As much as it seems to fit at face value the process of cracking a planet a really long and arduous one. It involves estalishing work colonies on the planet, digging bigass holes down into the plate so gravity tethers can be installed. Then the mining colony digs out the perimiter of the chunk that is gonna be pulled before the planet cracker can hook the tethers with a tractor beam and rip the chunk out.
With word of god you can write anything to justify it working, make a giant railgun that shoots tethers into a brethren moon or something, but if the moon is just a bunch of flesh then pulling the tether back out isn't gonna accomplish anything other than extracting the bullet.

you are claiming that only because of ishimura. which was stated multiple times is an ancient ship with ancient methods, one of the first big ones. Its not that much of an ass pull that never gen planet crackers don't need dedicated stations on ground to form tether links, but can instead deploy them from orbit

Not that Anon, but you didn't read the post you replied to. Literally everything you just farted out is addressed by:
>With word of god you can write anything to justify it working, make a giant railgun that shoots tethers into a brethren moon or something
But you're utterly incapable of working around:

I would argue that it's not that much of an asspull when the spirit of the games (or at least the first two) is "engineer mishandles power tools on purpose to kill space horrors"
There's also something to be said about the poetic irony of the antagonists targeting humanity's best and brightest and brainwashing them into making the same mistakes/Markers over and over, only to be defeated by those same people coming up with increasingly more improvised and destructive weapons to fight back with
I vaguely recall reading somewhere that the 4th game would be about rallying survivors to fight back, if you made all those people engineers or people of similar caliber you'd have yourself a plot, cast, resolution and hell even a coop system that writes itself
And then you still end on a bittersweet Lovecraft note because now the remnants of humanity are ruled by a class of craftsmen who are basically insane and whose creations will probably make the Brethren they just wiped out look like conservationists

Doesn't the planet cracking equipment have some kind of a gravity tractor beam or some shit? The flesh moons are both smaller and squishier than normal planets, so it could tear them apart if you bypass all the safety systems and put it on full blast or something.

>>
>>747561618

>>
>>747570004
Sure maybe, but the Brethren Moons are also infinitely smarter than us because they can just turn literal tons of flesh into miles of brain matter to think circles around any plan we could devise. So the more complicated the plan, the more interconnected parts you'll need for success and the more opportunities for the Brethren Moons to fuck your shit into an unwinnable scenario.

All of this of course is ignoring the fact that this is a story we're talking about and any solution would need to be true to the theme to whatever story we're telling.
>>
>>747569545
This.
Or bait it into a black hole or a supernova.
Or shoot it with a gamma ray burst.
Or throw a clump of strange matter at it.
>>
>>747571234
>the Brethren Moons are also infinitely smarter than us
Wright Bagwell, writer for DS3, said the moons are already so omnipresent every single one of Isaac's victories and close shaves are intended so that he arrives in Earth space at the right moment to lead the moons there. I wouldn't be surprised if humanity using planet crackers against them didn't have some contingency or post-credit "but they aren't really gone" twist.

that is cracking a planet responsibly so that there is no risk of debris harming the ship, the crew, a safe way to gather all of the materials
but if you just want to kill a fucking planet sized monster, a planet cracker should be able to do it
the scenario writes itself
>>
it's pretty clear that in ds1 the marker was trying to help your dumb ass, who decided to twist it to them being evil space moon with tentacles evil master plan to be even more evil?

I know how they can do it.
>>
>>747572086
>who decided to twist it to them being evil space moon with tentacles evil master plan to be even more evil?
Glen Schofield left after DS1. Steve Papoutsis, Wright Bagwell and Jeremy Bernstein changed the black markers to be malevolent.
>>
>>747572167
Adding to this, if you're curious who wrote DS1 OG under Schofield, it's these guys:

Warren Ellis
Rick Remender
Antony Johnston

I hear Antony did the bulk of it.
>>
>>747572216
Aside from Wright in 3, they were Jay Turner and Cherie Priest.
Jay is based and made Norton look like EA CEO Andrew Wilson so they could kill him in a game.
>>
>>747571234
It's also ignoring the fact that despite being infinitely smarter, they're only ever going to be as smart as the writers are, so if you do go the route of "they're unfathomable and everything is part of their keikaku (plan)" then you have to make it satisfying before trying to make it believable
You could also leave some room for mistakes, luck and bullshit, but arguably that's even harder to make satisfying even if this is nihilistic space horror
>>747572095
The return of Indoctrination Theory, stronger than before
>>
>>747572278
>The return of Indoctrination Theory, stronger than before
when you think about it, the gameplay and story of DS3 and ME3 are insanely similar. You can see that corporate homogenisation.
>>
>>747572216
>Warren Ellis
>Rick Remender

lol completely different styles

>I hear Antony did the bulk of it.

thank god, if warren had written most of it he would have focused on the tech and scifi aspects too much and the horror aspects might have suffered, if Remender, the entire game would have been about watching Isaac be sad as he gets cucked, watches his family die, loses and how everything he did just causes everything to get much worse and he causes even more people to die.....wait.
>>

Glenn only worked on DS1. He wasn't part of DS2 which was great or DS3 which had the moons. Hes talking out of his ass.
>>
>>747573146
He pitched DS4 with DS3's story in mind to EA in April of this year when the Saudis bought them. He didn't write DS3, no, but he was willing to carry on the plot.

the issue is that Halo only kills off sentient life, so Necromorphs could still infect any barebones living organisms on the level of animals.

You'd have to take all of them out, just killing one doesn't stop the necros being active, as NecroNorton proved in Awakened.
