Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is ultimately a story about grief and letting go. Verso’s ending captures that beautifully: destroying the Canvas means accepting that some things cannot, and perhaps shouldn’t, be preserved forever. It’s bittersweet rather than triumphant, forcing the Dessendre family to face reality and mourn instead of endlessly rewriting their loss. Painful, beautiful, and fitting, it asks whether loving someone can sometimes mean finally letting them go.
It is time we apologized.

Maelle could've had her cake and eaten it too if she gave Renoir the ultimatum that she'd kill herself if he destroyed the canvas, but would help him restrain Aline from reentering and kick her out again should she do so again before she's healthy enough to visit temporarily (a day or two at a time, at most)

>>747562521
I think the big issue with Verso's ending is that the Canvas is actually itself a living, breathing world.

Think of it like this: Say I always went to a pizza place with my brother, and then he died. Would it be healthy to show up to the pizza place and start treating one of the other patrons as my brother? Obviously no. Should probably stop going to that pizza place.

But it's *also* not healthy to toss a molotov through the window and burn the pizza place to the ground so I can never go back there, killing all the people inside.

Yes the family should almost certainly never go back to the Canvas. But the Canvas isn't just for them. It's for all the living, breathing beings that call it home.

I don't think either ending is a "good" one.
>>
>>747562521
All the Dessendre are selfish cunts. And Verso has no right to make the final choice even if it´s the best for Alicia. People main argument for Verso is that the painted people are not real; which is relative to if you consider the painted ones mere depictions or if you consider the Dessendre gods and the painted ones their creations. Many creation myths make it so that humans are created out of clay so an argument could be made for paintings not being that far off.

But i digress, my point is that those that for those that argument that the painted ones are not real there are two implications. One is that they are not really alive, the other that as mere depictions they have no right to make decisions for those that are. Add to that that Verso is not like most depictions. Most paintings on Verso´s world are an expression of himself so naturally Ciel is based on Aline, Lune is based on Clea, Monoko is based on Monoko and so on. All of them carry Verso´s soul in some way, they are an expression of it. The Verso we meet does not, he was created by Aline. He can choose to sacrifice the world and to align with the Dessendre because he doesn´t belong to neither world. He masquerades as a noble savior but in the end all he wants is to disappear himself.

>TL;DR You see the irony right? If he is real then everyone else is real so it would be genocide and if he is not real he has no right to make the choice for Alicia even if it is the choice that would be best for her. Unfortunate as it may be the choice is hers and hers alone.

Personally, I think the ending ultimatum is kind of forced. The entire conflict could have been resolved by Maelle simply coming and going from the Canvas at regular intervals. In hindsight, maybe get canvas twist was a mistake and it should have been about time travel or alternate dimensions instead.

As someone who prefers Maelle's ending, I understand Verso and Renoir's position/points of view perfectly.

The problem with the discourse around this game is that people like you see things in very black or white and then claim everyone else is doing so. Its easy to see why Renoir and Verso feel the way they do. They see Aline and Maelle both losing themself to fantasy and escapeism due to the grief of what happened to the real Verso. Obviously escapism and denial is not a healthy way to cope with trauma, and its unclear if therapy even exists in the world they live in at this period.

That being said, the moral conundrum of the story is not just about the suffering and escapism of these 2 people. It is also about the lives and souls of the painted people who were brought into existence without being asked and who have their own hopes, dreams, memories, and yes even souls.

The obvious answer to the moral dilemma is that there IS no right answer because no matter what choice you make, its completely fucked up. One choice has Maelle fall further into escapism and you see her forcing the memory of her brother play piano for her as a metaphor for how he has become a puppet of hers. But the other choice wipes out hundreds if not thousands of legitimate sentient people.

It is a trolley problem, it is not meant to have a clear cut and easy answer. The people who think it is an easy answer legitimately cannot empathise with a teenage girl who has basically lost everything, will be ugly forever, and whos only real way of being truly happy is to escape into a fantasy world where people actually do care for her.
>>
>>747569779
Congratulations, you're a healthy adult who realized that life is full of greys, morally ambiguous choices and often times no solution is all that well.

>The entire conflict could have been resolved by responsible use of heroin in moderation
I think the bigger problem with the plot is that it depends on the impossibility of securing a relatively small physical object so that neither a middle aged woman nor a cripple can get to it, which doesn't exactly seem like an insurmountable problem.
>>
>>747562521
More I think about it the more I think the ending dilemma was poorly conveyed, if not poorly written. I think the writers genuinely meant for there to be no 'good' ending, yet Maelle's is clearly framed more negatively. They also clearly needed to go harder on establishing that the painted world residents have souls since much of the fanbase either didn't realize that or actively deny it for the sake of framing Verso's ending as a golden ending.

Still lying even though you've heard the explanation so many times. For what purpose?
No movie was in the making and most likely no movie IS in the making even now. Story Kitchen is a company that makes movies, yes, and they buy rights before games even release just in case those games will become big later. They do it to get the rights while they're still cheap. In most cases they get those rights and sit on them without doing shit.
You can see some of their "projects" below. Try to count how many of those movies were actually released.

For a lot of people Maelle's ending "feels" like it should be the right choice so they are a little more heavy handed in showing how it's wrong. I think the fact that so many people both pick maelle's ending and try to say it's the "right" choice means they did at least a pretty good job of making it grey.

>I'm going to kill your friends. Then your family. I'll make you watch your brother die just in case it might inconvenience me. After that, I'll lecture my father about the meaning of family before I kill him too. And I'll lie to you about everything: their action, their purpose. Because explaining the truth is hard, and I'd rather you unknowingly destroy your home town, loved ones and comrades. Remember my sister? She wants peace, she believes we can talk things through. She wrote me a letter full of hope, one that I'll never share. I'll convince her not to kill herself, all while making her life so miserable that staying would be the crueller option. I had one hundred years to accept these memories of this man I never was. Even though you all support me as my own person, I'll still everyone in Lumière. You forgive me, again, for everything, so I'll hesitate. Briefly. But Alicia once lied to Renoir after having 16 years of chaos injected into her brain, so naturally I must now kill you all. Clearly there were no alternatives. Now... Suicide. It is morally grey, and totally for her. I mean, you saw what happened to Aline? The Dessendre tried nothing, and it didn't magically work out. So that's proof, right? It has to be. Otherwise I'd have to think back on the time I gaslit and killed my girlfriend over a minor misunderstanding I didn't even try to explain. I guess we'll never know who is right. There is just endless fog. Ambiguity. And a piano.

The only common thing is that people with sub-100 IQ think that one of the endings is good and the other bad. There are probably as many Versofags as there are Maellefags.
The common consensus of 100+ IQ people is that neither ending is "good" and they're just bad in different ways. Strange that not everyone can understand this, since the game's creators said it outright.
And yes, the additional content is fun, although it doesn't add anything of worth to the story.
There are new enemies, new bosses, new weapons and costumes, new pictos, even a new status effect.

The game is about grief but that's the more surface level theme that normies get stuck on. The true subject matter of the story that only a few of the more cerebral and attentive players focus on is art. For the sake of the plot she needs to exit the canvas and get revenge. She is also certainly a writer herself (she pass her time writing in Gustave's diary) and maybe her true live could also be a lie.

Personally I suspect the characters in the canvas to be related to already existing persons in the real life, especially Gustave, for many reasons but one of the main reason is his name isn't related to the name of his weapon like other characters.

I really wonder what scenario they will go for next, but maybe next game will be about playing one member of the painters, to get other sight of the story.

>Takes two years to do the same numbers a FF game does in a few months
ngmi and I hated FFXVI. Shit game should be burning in hell yet here we are talking about an even shittier game.

You are correct but you also just summed up the reason the same 5 schizos that shit up every FF7 thread decided to have a hate boner towards the game: It shows they never played the original.

I was one of the those who though the game was astroturfed to hell and back, because it was the wokest possible shit ( french game, faggot main character with a bunch of women bossing around, Old White Man as the big bad).
This year I finally decided to play and all that was correct... Until the first third, when everything is turned on his head, faggot die, a gigachad literally replaces him and the final boss is the just a loving father.

Based game.

gameplay is fun but its mostly a story game. lots of emotional custscenes, amazing voice acting, top notch sound track, the story is great and it has memorable characters.

Can we admit this game was FOTM yet? This is like the only thread about it in days. It was a decent little experience but it has no lasting appeal. Even the gooner freaks got bored of posting Lune pics and went back to their FF7R generals.

Is it fast paced enough to not get bored? I usually don't have a lot of time and I'm at the point where I mostly can only play rogue-lites or multiplayer games. I'd like a good story game but it needs some gameplay since I'm an old mostly sober man now, I have a lot of fucking stories in real life.

You may cry and bitch and shit and cum as much as you want. The only thing real in the Canvas is Verso's Soul and the Dessendres.
