And they retconned priests from using magic based on their beliefs and everything else is just gameplay mechanics to undead priests use holy magic but it doesnt feel good. Belief based priests was why they were the only class with racial spells so trolls were healing with voodoo and undead were healing with shadow. Human and dwarf both had desperate prayer because they both worship the light.
