41 Years Ago, gaming was saved
>>
41 years later and we're still getting platformers with virtually identical mechanics and gameplay. imagine if they were still making b&w slapstick silent movies in the 1960s.

i honestly like the graphical style of this game. still something about it that is very appealing.
>>
I wonder how different the gaming industry would be if Nintendo just never got the idea for Super Mario.

It was essentially the open world game of its time. So they may have largely stayed more constrained than even a level system for longer. Platformers would probably be more decentralized without Nintendo having basically the entire market by making something that would require copying to replicate the feel of. Gaming unironically could've stayed in a dark state in the West for longer, although that honestly could end up with a good result although it'd mean your parents didn't do it and would be less likely to be sympathetic to you picking up a gaming hobby. Maybe if Nintendo still has Zelda they go into a more RPG related direction with it as their main franchise. Combine that with their love of novel mechanics and they could be making high budget action jrpgs by now. Although it is hard to say whether they'd be well known or not. They did help out many of the companies that would be competitors in this field so maybe they would dominate this market.

You can create an argument that "There was a Doom and we still are getting shooters" or "Dragon Quest with JRPGs".
Pick a game and complain that genre exist because of it.
But then I agree you pick random game from Atari 2600 and you have no fucking clue what's going on.

What about color sound slapstick movies?

Really speaks volumes of Nintendo corporate actions.

Reminder that we probably wouldn't have a lot of Key characters from Platformers if it wasn't for Mario. Sonic and Crash specifically are some big ones

One of my favorite space saving tricks is the song when you finish a level and the mushroom powerup sound are the same sound bite, but just massively sped-up

What idea?

It has been a long time since I've been baffled by a post to this degree.

Just answer the question, vague-poster.

What is the answer that you want? An explanation of the premise of Super Mario Bros? Of Mario as a character? You should already know all of that. I don't believe that I can tell you anything that you don't already know.

nta, but it wasn't the Mario character. It was about the technical breakthrough that Mario had momentum in his movement that set the golden standard for platformers.

Name at least one which isn't some obscure indie shit no one ever heard about.

Are you being daft on purpose?
Use the context of the post I replied to:
>I wonder how different the gaming industry would be if Nintendo just never got the idea for Super Mario.
What specific idea is this referring to? A mechanic? Say it.

SMB1 wasn't the origin of its idea, it just popularized it. Platformers still would be largely the same today, just following Pac-Land or Pitfall instead.

"console gaming" was saved
Arcades were doing just fine at that time

It would be pathic if it didn't

Such a power move. Nobody's dared to fuck with them since. People are afraid to mention fangames in fear of them meeting the same fate.

I meant "what would have happened if Nintendo never made Super Mario Bros?".
>>
>>747573670
the original super mario bros game is a master class in game design

Every enemy has a unique behavior and visibly distinct
Every action and collision has audio feedback, aside from running, which would just be annoying
The score board is there despite it having no purpose or impact on the game, but number go up = feels good.
The difficulty rises reasonably as the game goes on

The only design flaws I can think of is the jumping being stiff and the lives limit which is a holdover from arcade cabinet game design.

They got so many things right, they really put what they knew about their craft to make this game, and built on it from Super Mario 3 onward. 2 is a fine game but comes from a separate design path

>>747573670
>It was about the technical breakthrough that Mario had momentum in his movement that set the golden standard for platformers.
If this was so inspirational then how come most successful platformers that came after lacked momentum?
Castlevania, Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, Contra, GnG... Hell, even Metroid from the same company doesn't have momentum.
Not saying momentum is bad/good, just discussing impact here.
>>747573986
>what would have happened if Nintendo never made Super Mario Bros?
The world would keep spinning.
They had already made several Mario games before Super Mario Bros.
There had already been other games with momentum in the movement.
There had already been other sidescrolling games - some with momentum too.
>>
>>747574352
>2 is a fine game but comes from a separate design path
Because the 2 we got in the west wasn't a Mario game but a reskin of Doki Doki Panic
