The reason Bioshock never recovered from Infinite is that Infinite is a genuinely terrible game in every single aspect.Terrible gameplay, terrible story, terrible art direction... just terrible all around.

The real problem is Bioshock 2. It was more of the same with a weaker story that didn't advance anything. Given the sales it emboldened them to make whatever trash they wanted. I'm sure Infinite sold better than 1 & 2 combined.

It was a hype train that was never going to live up to the final product. Playing it now without expectations is a lot better than playing it on release day. Its still a stripped down less good version of the other games trading the claustrophobic atmosphere of rapture with the open cloud city of columbia. The game looks good, its biggest problem is tiny shitty encounters in shooting galleries that never requires you to engage with any of the mechanics in the game. The story is fucking stupid, but what can you expect when Ken has said the inspiration was someone trying to understand quantum physics to him, Levine feeling like an idiot because he couldn't get it, and then decided to base the story around a concept he doesn't understand because it makes him feel dumb.
