Unlike most franchises I think Nintendo should stay away from 2D Mario games. Every attempt they've made since 2006 has felt vanilla and pedestrian.

Meanwhile their 3D Mario games have generally been superior experiences in virtually every category.

2d mario = cheap development for a cheap company
3d mario = a gamble in sales and a bone throw for nintendies to eat it up

simple as business model

Unfortunately Wonder focused on bizarre spectacle while its idea of changing up the gameplay formula was to have fewer boss fights. Except for the last few bonus levels the game just isn't challenging, so you look back on your experience with the game and you whizzed through it so fast you struggle to remember parts of it.

They've only made five 2D Mario games in 20 years.

Aren't the 2d games handled by different teams compared to the 3d games? There is zero reason to not do 2d games if they don't impact 3d game development.

After Wonder I'm not very enthusiastic about trying future attempts. It's not bad, far from it, but their attempt to be different from NSMB still failed to inspire any truly fresh sensations in me.
