Why do JRPG fans think that it's one of the best protagonists in the genre? He conveniently avoided any decision which would make him look bad and memes about "funny autistic scientist" don't do anything for me.So can you explain to me why he is held in such high rregard?
JRPG fan here, I don't think thiscan you stop making shit up to be mad about?
>>747583907Must be people who never played many rpgs in the first place
Nobody says this.
>>747583907He scream real good
Does anyone even care about him besides shitposters and smashfags?
>>747583907>He conveniently avoided any decision which would make him look badHim hesitating gets someone close to him killed and a bunch of others nearly killed until he realizes he's being retarded by not telling people.
>>747583907Shulk isn't regarded as one of the best protags, he's carried by an excellent english VA. He's not even close to being the best Xeno protag
He's just an agreeable dude who tries to help everyone and stays humble. There's not much to it. Shulk's got the benefit of being graded on a curve though, since the two Xeno protags before him were a schizo who angsted like Shinji Ikari on his good days, and Woman Moment: The Character.
>>747585671>Woman Moment: The Character.this is what makes Shion so good, no one else has had the guts to depict women so accurately in gaming
>>747585902>no one else has had the guts to depict women so accurately in gamingexcept SMT does it all the time
>>747585968SMT is so light on story (outside of DDS) that it hardly matters
>>747583907I like Xenoblade, but all three mainline games aren't anywhere the peak of the genre in terms of writing. 1 in particular really fumbles on its character writing because most party members have no real reason to be a part of the story and have little to no agency. FFX handles all of its own characters significantly better than any Xenoblade. Also Takahadi is a hack that can never commit to anything bitter sweet.
>>747583907i like xb1 but shulk has the personality of wet cardboard
>>747586174xenosaga and blade 3 have bittersweet endings
>>747586174>its character writing because most party members have no real reason to be a part of the storyThey are fighting to save their world. Not sure if they need any other motivation.>Also Takahadi is a hack that can never commit to anything bitter sweetTrue for Xenoblade. I'm surprised that Melia didn't fuck MC like Nia.
>>747586487>They are fighting to save their worldnot really, not for most of the game though. Revenge is the motivation, saving the world comes later (except for riki who's there just because)
>>747583907He isn't really that great, it's just that the bar for JRPG protagonists is very low. His balancing act between anrgy revenge hothead, power of friendshit shonen protagonist and reflected scientist is unique and mostly well done. Great voice acting helps.Another underrated quality is that he's a rare hero's journey protagonist kid who surpasses his badass mentor(s) both in terms of power and wisdom without the mentors having to predictably die in the first act to pass the torch. That's a satisfying arc.
I think it helps that basically at no point he comes off like a whiny bitch or passive.
>>747586725he should have let metal face die which happens anyway. Dunban was right in that scene but the game thinks otherwise
Takahashi doesn't know how to write. Gears is his only game worth playing
>>747586803Shulk wanted to interrogate Mumkhar, he mentions it later even if in the moment he pulls that cringe "if you kill him you'll be just like him".
>>747589763someone who mass murders because he wanted a toy or was asshurt over someone else's popularity doesn't deserve and interrogation
>>747589904Shulk needed to find out how and why humans were turned into mechon in order to know how to deal with Fiora, retard. Interrogations aren't for the sake of the interrogated.
>>747590181that wasn't in reference to to him specifically, he could have interrogated any face unit
>>747591234Mumkhar was the first time they had a Mechon commander at their mercy since Xord, who killed himself. A random grunt would presumably not have as much useful intel as one of the apparent leaders of the enemy army. Killing him would be extremely foolish if it could be avoided.
>>747589763No he didn't, he was all for not killing him because he was a homs, and they were about to walk away from him to continue on toward Fiora.
He's based other than bitching out on killing Mumkhar
>>747586174>no real reason to be a part of the story and have little to no agency. FFX handles all of its own characters significantly betterit's equally bad, wakka lulu kimahri and rikku could be deleted from the game and nothing would change
>>747583907Good voice acting. Funny meme battle cries. He's alright. The bar for JRPG protagonists is set at "not annoying."
>>747594373Wakka and Lulu are guardians at least and aren't just along for the ride. Also Wakka at least has an arc. Walka's arc with overcoming his hatred of the al-bhed and realizing his religion is a hypocritical sham. Rikku ties into this too since that conflict would be irrelevant without an al-bhed party member nor would there be anyone to show why the al-bhed do what they do without her. Lulu and Khimari are kind of just there, but XB1's party is pretty much made of bystanders to the story. Reyn doesn't really get an arc aside from wanting to protect Shulk and getting kind of pissed at him for not warning him about his visions. Those are basically the first 3 chapters of the game, and then Reyn is just along for the ride afterwards. Dunban's only real moment as a character is getting pissed when it's revealed Mumkhar is a face mechon and wanting him dead, but the story just handwaves it by conveniently killing him off. Sharla is Sharla. Fiora is just motivation for Shulk to kill all Mechon until she's brought back and gets a god inside her. Afterwards, she's just "muh body" until the game handwaves that off screen. Melia is probably the most thoroughly written party member that hasn't Shulk. Of course everyone wants to save the world, but most of them have little or nothing to contribute to the story aside from having a minor plot point to get them involved initially.
Video games have a famously low standard for "good character writing."
>>747583907He is?
>>747583907Rex is better
