You're not as smart as you think you are.
people who make or play vidya are not and cannot be intelligent

>>747586508The issue is that nips try to be deep by vampirizing western philosophy. They will always fail because their society and history are far too different, the vast majority of them will also be stuck with translations of western thinkers. I wouldn't trust a Three Kingdoms story made by Americans either. They should act less like colonized losers and instead use their own literature and philosophy when creating stories.
>>747586508bloodborne's story is pretty straightforward in the original jp ver, it's very muddled and pretentious and vague in the english translation (what most people play). the problem is that jap devs try pumping western thought into their games because, admittedly, western philosophy is very cool, and adding japanese autism to it makes for fun games. but they're not westoids. they're japs. their racial soul fundamentally blocks them from a complete understanding of western thought. they should make a game with jap philosophy, that'll probably be interesting.

>>747588193anon, an exception does not disprove the rule. i'm sure there are japanese scholars who are well versed in western literature, just as there would be western scholars well versed in japanese literature. but on AVERAGE, i'd trust a jap's analysis about the book of five rings over some western podcaster. have you read murakami's drivel about kafka? it's horrendous.
>>747586508>deep stories>without being pretentiousPick one. By trying to tell a story with some meaning you are automatically pretentious on some level. Writers are just using ideas and quotes that they themselves like or find interesting. It's the same level of pretentiousness as someone on this board posting their Top 5 favorites and why. So what if a dev doesn't do a deep dive and exhaust some philosophy from every angle? It would probably be to the detriment of the game. People who overly complain about pretentiousness are even more pretentious themselves. Upset that that devs don't have to write a full blown essay about Nietzsche or Aristotle the way their professors forced them to. Carl, Freud, and all other thinkers are ultimately pretentious douches.
>>747586508Every western writer writing a “deep” story is also pretentious
>>747588990Pretentious means showing off a depth that it doesn't actually have, all style and no substance, so to speak. It is fine to quote Nietzsche or anything else, and especially to not treat him like cliffnotes, but if you want to subvert him or use him for the story, you have to show that you know what you are doing. Having a character say "God is dead" because God didn't step in to save an innocent person is a misleading and flat out wrong usage, because that phrase has a different meaning (the collapse of Western values).
>>747587589Shouldn't we be embarrassed that Japanese people read our Western literature and mine them for ideas more than we do?
>>747589487>shouldn't we be embarrassed asians fetishize western literature the same way westoids fetishize eastoid literatureehhh mmmmaybe, depends who you're asking
>>747589487To be fair, a lot of our nerd oriented media when it still existed like comics and some videogames drew inspiration from these things too. It is hard to say whether we'd have similar amounts of esoteric inspiration in our media if we had industries like Japan's manga, anime, and doujin game ones. It seems like many nowadays have something deep they know way too much about. We've just gotten trapped with media that appeals to a common denominator so low it may not even exist. I wish we had more western media inspired by cool shit like Japanese media is though. It almost always lands well.
>>747586508You're the most pretentious little faggot I know anon just by looking at this extremely braindead post.
>>747590189>Ad hominem
>>747586508Shu Takumi imo.Of course there's a few parts of his games that overreach a little bit but he's the only VN/Game author that comes to mind that actually just earns what he's trying to do, and he lacks the immaturity and pervertshit that so many other otaku auteurs in games tend to have. Part of that is because there's oversight from Capcom but not really, because the games he didn't work on in the Ace Attorney series always have big tit fanservice characters who appear to show off some horny animation. He writes loli characters but there's practically nothing about them that feels sexualized to me. At first you see Watson in Great Ace Attorney and go "oh god it's a loli character" and then 5 hours later you've forgotten she has loli proportions because there's literally nothing in the animations or the script that makes it feel skeevy. And his storytelling is very intellectually mature. He outshines so many of his own kind (japanese men) who try way too fucking hard to do, what he makes seem easy, and it's because he's actually well read, and he decided to avoid "Japanese tricks" in his mysteries, and wanted to do something a lot more western-mystery coded, not because he's a wannabe but because he actually adores those novels.
>>747586508Provide a clear and unambiguous list of criteria for what counts as a "deep story" and what counts as "being pretentious" and I will provide you with an answer. My assumption is that the only answer you will accept is that "no there is no Japanese vidya auteur who wants to write deep stories without being pretentious" because there is a 1:1 overlap with the two terms in your mind.
Hideo Kojima has predicted world scale events time and time again. You can rightfully criticize him for many things, but he writes/approves stories that are very intelligent and forward thinking.
>>747590750Pretentious means using symbols superficially and ornamentally, without truly understanding them. In addition, there is often a tendency to use didactic dialogue with zero subtext or drama. An example is Nephilim in Xenosaga lecturing you: "You must accept the entirety of your memories. Happy memories are only half of the whole." This leads to building stories based on labels instead of letting conflict emerge from action, where action can include dialogue, provided it is natural and dramatic rather than didactic

The sooner you accept that video games are toys for children, the sooner it will make sense to you. You have to understand, games are probably at the very bottom of the barrel in terms of serious intellectual engagement or even "art". The best written Vidya ever -- the classic shit -- is middle school tier to anyone who has read a book past high school. Video games are built to be engaging. They are designed to monopolize your time and attention. Increasingly, they are built to extract wealth from retarded children (and their parents). There is no serious vidya or Vidya thought. There is no serious video game writing. Im sorry if you think video games somehow were reaching for a "high level of intellectual pursuit." Quite literally the most popular games at the moment are lauded because theyre "difficult." No expression -- movie visuals. No thought -- middle school fan fic writing. 20 year old men will play these games 7 or 8 times over and learn nothing new about themselves except when to press the right button.People who play video games as their sole source of information, entertainment, and intellectual stimulation are on par with anons who tried learning Japanese from their favorite animeThe substance isn't there. It's just not.
>>747596942Yeah thats why adam sandler movies are all more intellectual than video games
>>747596942To be honest, I'm disappointed, not because I need to glorify a hobby, but simply because, having grown up with it, it would be nice if something that accompanied you actually had real substance. It is just a personal disappointment born from the love felt for it, it is simply a shame
