I tried a few of these vibeslop ports, but it was worse than just emulating. The "dev" couldn't debug any issues either since he didn't know what was going on.

The solution Astra came up with is both using a somewhat different method and solves a more comprehensive version of the problem than the mathematicians were doing, which even if it had some info from them in it's training data and we assume it had a real effect on the final model, which isn't guaranteed, at least like 50% of the final proof can't be from anything other than the AI because the humans never got that far in the first place. the scummy part is openAI's handling of it, and maybe the decision to go for it in the first place, they claim to not have been aware of how close the human team was and were just going off vague rumors but I'm skeptical. I think it's pretty likely they're telling the truth about not directly referencing their work when setting their model on the problem because that should be pretty easy to verify if an investigation happens, but they must have spent at least several 10s of million dollars on inference going by what they say the AI did, even as flush with cash as they are I don't think you spend that much time and money on a vague guess, I think they knew the specific problem was solvable and had a reasonable expectation that their AI could do it and so they were willing to spend whatever it took to get there first.
