I'd much rather watch obscure trashy anime from the 80s up to the early 2000s or play random shit on MAME than engage with popular garbage or engage with cancerous fanbases. Even if a particular work isn't that interesting, there's a fun investigative aspect of digging deep into different studios, people, movements, or time periods.Plus finding stuff on your own helps you become an individual instead of "the algorithm/community is my personality" and gives you a lot of unique insights to contribute back to discussions of those popular things.
