no. you should still try the NES version to see what it's like when you unlock it in that game.
>>
>>747606965
yes. zero mission is completely different game, so it isn't a replacement. is up to your tastes if you like nes games ect. i personally dislike zm and play the nes one every now and then.
>>
>>747607280
it's what the original game wanted to be. I owned this game on gba and holy shit the NES game was just painful to play.
>>
>>747606965
yeah it's a lot more fun
>>
>>747607361
>it's what the original game wanted to be.
nope, not even close. ZM is a better game but has a different direction than M1. In fact, metroid 1 could be classified as the actual only non-linear game in the series despite its constrained design. The fact that ZM's new added segment was a stealth mission says a lot about the thought process behind 2D metroid at the time

>>747606965
Not unless you're into NES games in general. If you just wanna feel like you're playing the series chronologically then ZM is fine.
>>
>>747607504
it was so long ago I can't speak to that at all. I will say that for me the GBA metroid games are some of the best I ever played. No guides, no internet, beat that shit by ball bombing every single fucking tile in the game until I found the next path. Fusion is one of the best games on the platform.
>>
>>747607851
fusion is fucking terrible, it's a glorified hallway that never lets you explore. Beating that game without a guide is as much of an acheivement as beating a kirby game without one (actually even amazing mirror has more proper exploration)
>>
>>747606965
zero mission includes the OG as a reward for beating the game
it's two games in one
>>
>>747606965
Novelty. The original Metroid is a good game, even if it hasn't aged well. You won't have a bad time.

But yes, Zero Mission is just a straight up better version of it.

ZM is arguably a better game but it doesn't resemble the OG Metroid in the slightest. If nintendo came out today and said that it actually wasn't based off of the original, nobody would question that.

Fusion had a lot of cool powers and upgrades and enemies and jungle areas. Maybe you're just gay?

The original: Total isolated free roaming. If you can get over the hallways being hard to navigate, it's actually pretty good.
Zero Mission: Gameplay, visuals, music and almost everything else has been updated. But the world is more linear. So it lacks the free exploration.

If you really can't get over the similar looking hallways though, just play Metroid II on GB. Which keeps the isolation feel and lack of a map, but it's easier to navigate. And it's still one of the best Metroid games.
>>
Play Metroid Planets or the SNES port romhack if you want to try Metroid 1.

The original on GB is still amazing. Samus Returns is in the running for the worst Metroid game and removed literally everything the original game had except the Metroids. And the Metroids are also shit because they're scripted boss battles now.
>>
>>747608607
Metroid 2 on the GB is perfectly playable.

The 3DS version is barely a remake and honestly kind of a drag.

Not "over" it. It's either or both. They are completely different exercises. You play zero mission for fun. You play OG metroid for historical value or understanding of video games or something gay like that.

Well that one doesn't kill you through doors for starters. The only actual downsides to zero mission is the big kraid change (ends up being a better boss fight so I'll allow it) and the chozo/zero suit stuff.

>>747611228
Super metroid literally set the standard for not just the series, but the entire genre. You can tell when a game is too good as well, like Nintendo were stuck in its shadow for decades.
>>
>>747611645
Metroid II actually set the standard. Super improved upon it. You can even say Zelda 2 set the standard if you want to go back to the origins that Metroid was built upon. But when it comes to the things like sprite size, many of the key items, world design and stuff, Metroid II was the huge leap forward. Even though people want to think of it as this dated crappy game. It's actually like the Mario Bros 3/Land 2 level jump in graphics, years before Mario 3/Land 2 came out.

Also, not that story matters, but Sakamoto has basically based everything around the ending of Metroid II. It's kinda crazy how obsessed he is with it when it's one of the games he didn't work on.

NEStroid sucks at first but becomes kino with familiarity

Plus it's surprisingly atmospheric and exciting for a nes game. You get swarmed in these evil ass caverns and have to fight for your life in every single hallway until the tide turns and you start destroying everything
>>
Not really, unless you like Metroid enough to experience all of it. Super Metroid is basically a better, expanded version of NES Metroid, just treated narratively as a sequel.
>>

Metroid came out before Zelda 2 dumbass.
>>
>>747606965
One tiny thing that would mostly fix the original is destructible blocks having a different texture or hue.
Extending playtime in 1985 was achieved using simple methods, they probably intentionally made desrtuctable blocks look as ordinary blocks.

Drawing my own map as I played this was one of my favorite video game memories.
Now whenever I revisit it I still have a scan of that old map for reference and can cheat and find a the missile tanks and upgrades easily.
Zero Mission is a 10/10 game in its own right, but it doesn't have that aspect to it.

i found prime 2 to be prime 1 but with less biomes, just copy pasta with the dark world
navigating with light+dark map was more frustrating

prime 3 was just empty and boring, having to wait 5 seconds for every door to open was obnoxious

Zero Mission is much more appropriate a choice for a series newcomer, as its closer to what the 2D games became, and is overall a smoother experience. The original isn't bad, and I think people should still give it a look after having played a few of the games already, but unless you are an avid NES enjoyer, it doesn't work as well as a first introduction to the series in this day and age.

>>747606965
Realistically I cant think of a reason, and I'm directly in the age group who grew up with the original NES metroid 1 to 1.

I think the original has novelty, but has aged so badly that unless you grew up with it like me, and remember how to pilot around the games jank, or if you like learning tough games with lots of "cheapshots", its not worth your time. Just do Zero mission. The original isn't a bad game when compared to the NES library, but it is a bad game in the broader scope when compared games in its genre since its release.

Even on the NES itself, there's far better platformers with better controls, mechanics, exploration and abilities.
>>
>>747606965
Kind of sort of. It's worth playing just to see what the original was like, but Zero Mission is just an overall outright better replacement.

Playing Samus Return you can see this is the only Metroid that sort of have a more realistic map that the rest, you can actually tell what is a building, what is a tunnel and the area outside the building, Unlike SuperMetroid were everything feels like a tunnel that sometimes is made or rock or made of metal.
>>
If you are curious about game history and franchise origins, or are really in to retro game design, I would say give it a go, it's pretty aged though (I think people overstate this, but the fundamental statement is not wrong). If you don't enjoy slower old shit, os some of that 80s game BS aspects, you can skip it.

I think one thing that limits the game is being B&W, it makes things more samey but the sections are small enough you don't get lost for long.

For a OG gameboy game is quite robust, big variety of enemies, big bosses and what I like to call little unique hand crafted sections that make it memorable (I'm talking about the varia suit being in some kind of chozo sphere storage in the back of a chozo statue room, the broken chozo statue, or the sprinball boss jumping out of were the item is suppose to be), that being said there are some limitations, the music is kind of bad and you can tell they recycle certain sections of map and use them in various places, which leads to some areas having secret tunnels that go nowhere because in some other part of the game there is a equivalent room that does have a secret hiding behind a the fake wall.
