It's fine. The gameplay was fun but like 40cpercent or the cutscenes should have been cut. I view other m and another story or a side thing. It's fine for what it is and is fun with the motion controls. The fact that it's still talked about means it's memorable. No one will be talking about the current wolverine game in 15 years
>>
>>747607498
It'd be a 7/10 if it wasn't for the cutscenes, but the cutscenes drag it down to like a 4. You can't ignore them. Literally. You can't even skip them
>>
>>747607193
Replayed all the Metroid games recently. I'd still play this over Samus Returns. Both suck but Samus Returns is shit even in the gameplay and world design. This game is okay when it's not a cutscene or QTE.

Ignore the story and is a solid 7 outnof 10. I like the parry mechanic and some attacks animatuons happening in contextual situatuins loke jumñing on top of some enemies for example make Samus shoot them point blank on their heads.

It's a great game that Westoids hate just because of Samus' portrayal as a feminine motherly woman who respects male authority.

No. Most of the critisism is shitty cutscenes, voiced lines and Samus being scared of Ridley. Which they still miss many of the other worst parts of the games. The QTEs, pixel hunts and almost total lack of music to create "atmosphere."

But again, still better than Samus Returns.

Even if Samus had the best-written dialogue, her voice actress is so abysmally fucking nails-on-a-chalkboard terrible that it singlehandedly makes the cutscenes unwatchable for me. It's as bad as Ada in RE4 remake, or Megan Fox and Ronda Rousey in the new Mortal Kombat games

I liked Other M. Never had a really bad moment with it. It's overrated and I dont really know why. It's not a great game, and one of the weakest Metroid, but I had fun with it.
Hunters, NES 1 and GB 2 are way worse.

>The gameplay was fun
No reason to actually fight anything unless it's a boss or you have to unlock a door.
Incredibly easy and overpowered dodge that instantly charges your weapon and prevents all damage.
Using missiles turns you into a stationary target with slow aiming, charging, and lock-on.
D-pad movement in a 3D environment is clunky and annoying.

The thumbs-up sign had been used by the Galactic Federation for ages. Me, I was known for giving the thumbs-down during briefing.

I had my reasons, though... Commander Adam Malkovich was normally cool and not one to joke around, but he would end all of his mission briefings by saying, "Any objections, Lady?" He was joking, but others weren't... At the time I felt surrounded by people who treated me like a child or used kid gloves because I was a woman.

And yet, with Adam, I was grateful for the nod... My past has left me with an uneasy soul, and as a result, it touched me on some level that Adam would acknowledge that past by calling me something delicate—like "Lady." And I knew more than anyone that every word from Adam was deliberate. My thumbs-down was a twofold response—a sign of derision at being called a lady, and a signal of my complete understanding of the mission orders. The other soldiers were always willing to support me with easy smiles despite the fact that I clearly had so much yet to learn. Among them was Anthony.

In the face of his well-meaning behavior, and that of the other soldiers, my response was to become increasingly bitter. I was a child, always with something to prove. A chip on my shoulder.

And I was angry. I felt that if I let my guard down, I would easily be broken. And beyond that, I was scared. But even in the naivete of my youth, I could see in Adam's joking manner how close he felt to me.

Adam knows my past. And he knows me better than anyone else.

Confession time. Because I was so young when I lost both of my parents, there's no question I saw Adam as a father figure. When I rebelled against him, I knew I could get away with it. And his paternal compassion in the face of my rebellion reinforced the special bond I felt with him.

I understood well that chances were slim that I would ever find anyone that understood me like Adam. And yet... When the time came, I still left his side. I was so young. Young and naive...

Even within the franchise, I think Prime 4 is an example of this. It's gonna be forgotten a lot faster than Other M even if it's not quite as much of a disaster.
Not sure if I agree that's a good thing or not though.

You guys never even notice this if it's not a female protagonist because it's just normal to you. it's very common in games, especially anything that involves military.
You don't want women to ever be depicted as subordinates in any situation and it's obviously some weird brainwashing shit that you've embraced.

>>
>>747609553
That's the thing, Beyond was better than Other M but in the end it's merely a mediocre and dull game. The reason Other M is remembered is because of just how dogshit it is on nearly every front.
>>
The only thing I really didn't enjoy about other m was the d-pad controls in 3d arenas. They genuinely made develoment harder on themselves by trying to make a true 2d/3d hybrid
>>
>>747609659
Anon... Samus isn't in the military (anymore). Did you play the game? Master Chief taking orders from a naval admiral makes sense. Samus, an independent bounty hunter, taking orders from a military general that doesn't even want her on the mission and she is actively disobeying by even being present, should not be taking orders from him. They're not even supposed to be assigned to the same mission together. She's literally following him around like a sad unwanted puppy. I can't think of any male protagonist that pathetic
>>
>>747607193
samus was the healthiest breeding stock by the time of Other M (last entry in the timeline), her body was at it's curviest and most mature and mentally her mind was at it's most fragile and childlike. Objectively peak mating health.
>>
>>747609659
If Sakamoto wanted a woman to be stupid, whiny, nearly in-tears over getting her daddy's approval, and completely useless in her own game, he should have just created a brand-new character instead of taking Samus and mangling her into his vision of what Samus was "supposed to be".
>>
>>747609147
Zero Suit looked her absolute best in Other M, I love the gun hip strap thing, even more so than what Smash 4 and Ultimate did to her, giving her random bracelets and rocket heels. >>
>>747608881
While I don't know of any of her other vocal performances to compare it to, it may not have even been the voice actors fault. A lot of the problem is the direction. Them telling Samus and Adam to act stoic and stilted. While the other actors are hamming it up like it's a B horror movie. The Japanese voices also have this problem. The scenes are boring even in the Japanese.

And it's the same with games like Breath of the Wild. So even when you get rid of the forced fake British accents and listen to it in another language like Japanese, it's totally bad. Even though the voice actors have plenty of other work you can go watch and they do fine in those. For some reason Nintendo just wants their characters to sound stilted and "grounded" in cutscenes, the few games that get them. The remake of Ocarina looks to be doing the same.
>>
I don't have a list in front of me but I'm fairly sure I remember that it contradicts literally every other game in the series in some way or another.

Samus shouldn't have had voice acting and a backstory at all. Because 90% of her appeal was the unknown. She was basically the female Boba Fett. But like Boba Fett, when we got an origin story for him, the mystery was gone. And no one cared about him anymore.

They just did a terrible job of "humanizing" her on top of this.

I do love how much Samus and the player accomplishes in Other M.
It was great stopping the Deleter... wait, MB killed him.
There was preventing the BOTTLE Ship from reaching Federation space... no, Anthony did that.
We finally ended Ridley's threat... shoot, Queen Metroid ate him.
That amazing final level of Sector Zero was so much fun... hold on, Adam shot us in the back and stole it.
But surely we took down the galactic menace that was MB... and the Galactic Federation just ventilated her.
AHA! We saved Adam's helmet from the self-destructing ship... unless we're on Hard Mode which doesn't have the postgame content.

I'm willing to try to challenge/question some of this stuff cause I'm bored and amused at replying to arguments from 2012
How does samus working with the feds in other M contradict the prime trilogy?
I'm not sure what Mother Brain's defeat has to do with the space pirate's competency. I dont think they were even responsible for her return in Super.
The fusion suit is technically a downgraded power suit wittled down to its bare essentials, the pieces that make the varia suit we know are with the SA-X.

And for the cold immune metroids, maybe we can chalk this to the usefulness of the hatchling metroids vs the evolved state? The feds maybe prefer the floating speedy stages compared to the grounded advanced stages
>>
>>747610848
You can have a character who doesn't deliver emotion in the tone of their voice but still deliver it in other ways. But that takes good writing. Allusions to their thoughts and feelings through what they say, rather than how they say it.

Other M has the exact opposite. Samus is literally freaking out and scared in cutscenes, but then delivered emotionless and boring. Then in the cutscenes of her as a child she's overacting and angry. Its like they (probably Sakamoto) doesn't even understand how human emotions work. Let alone how to portray them through the medium of film.

Other M's gameplay is awful too. Sakamoto demanded that the game be played on a sideways wii remote, which means there was no room for a dedicated dodge button, so dodging is performed by tapping the joypad in any direction. Since the joypad is also used for normal movement, it was impossible to implement any kind of punishment for mistiming a dodge attempt (since there's no way to know if it WAS a failed dodge attempt and not just normal movement) and as such you can do a full clear no damage run by just continuously tapping in some direction to auto-dodge anything that would hit you. And of course, there was no space on the controller to implement any kind of aiming during combat, so you just mash the fire button to deal damage. It's entirely Sakamoto's fault rather than Team Ninja, but Other M is the ultimate button masher with less gameplay depth than that fucking Wolverine game that just came out.
>>
>>747611664
Yes. We're literally saying Other M shouldn't have had the cutscenes at all and focused just on gameplay. Good job.

>How does samus working with the feds in other M contradict the prime trilogy?
Samus specifically says she never worked with the Federation from the moment she left until Other M.
>I'm not sure what Mother Brain's defeat has to do with the space pirate's competency. I dont think they were even responsible for her return in Super.
Other M explains that without a Mother Brain, the Space Pirates were feral animals without thought of their own.
>The fusion suit is technically a downgraded power suit wittled down to its bare essentials, the pieces that make the varia suit we know are with the SA-X.
Other M explains that Samus' suit is tied to her emotional state, which is why she desummons the suit when freaking out over Ridley and Adam shoots her in the back. In Fusion they had to cut most of her suit off of her body.
>And for the cold immune metroids, maybe we can chalk this to the usefulness of the hatchling metroids vs the evolved state? The feds maybe prefer the floating speedy stages compared to the grounded advanced stages
This one is logical.
>>
>>747611527
>How does samus working with the feds in other M contradict the prime trilogy?
She has a line in Other M where she states this is her first joint mission with the Feds since leaving them. ... Which, actually contradicts the first game two, technically.

>I'm not sure what Mother Brain's defeat has to do with the space pirate's competency. I dont think they were even responsible for her return in Super.
There's this dumb plot point about how Space Pirates are actually mindless beasts who Mother Brain is controlling.

>The fusion suit is technically a downgraded power suit wittled down to its bare essentials, the pieces that make the varia suit we know are with the SA-X.
It's referring to the plot point about how the suit is maintained by Samus actively concentrating to keep it on. This is just straight up wrong, as shown by several other games where she's temporarily incapacitated and it stays on.

Nothing ever dies in the Metroid universe. You can literally sit there seeing something blow up, then blow up the entire planet it's on. Then they come back 2 games later.

What's dumb is not so much that they come back. But they can't keep the continuity correct. Ridley shouldn't have shown up in Samus Returns. Let alone augmented Ridley. And Kraid shouldn't be in Dread. But we're past the idea of continuity and now it's just "gotta put them in to make the fans squeal."

Metroid has always been anime as fuck. They chose the wrong style of anime to emulate.

>>747612505
They seem to have truly given the fuck up on trying to appeal to Japan with Metroid. Which is funny, cause they tried really fucking hard, and not even just with Other M. There's like five(technically six) different Metroid manga for fucks sake.

>You can literally sit there seeing something blow up, then blow up the entire planet it's on. Then they come back 2 games later.
This has never happened in the entire Metroid franchise. Except Kraid, that kinda has no excuse other than 1, it's a different member of his species, or 2, he escaped long before Zebes blew up (I mean he had plenty of time since you beat him near the beginning)
>>

I'm gonna be real. I think (modern) Japanese media is only good when they're pandering to Westerners. Metroid, Dark Souls, Berserk, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Ghost in the Shell, Silent Hill. All very Western. Pure Japanese shit is gay and cringe (like JRPGs). Well there's some cool samurai games but besides that. A Japanese man can only make something good if he watched an American movie, thought "that's the coolest shit I've ever seen", and then makes a video-game or anime trying to emulate that feeling

Other m would be a terrible game even with zero story. The whole gameplay revolves around gutting everything good about metroid, to make an overly linear cinematic third person shooter, with auto aim and health/ammo regen, and no exploration allowed.
>>
>>747613025
Dark Samus shouldn't count because the scene where she comes back to life is in the same game where she was beaten, not something they retconned in later. Both times.

I'll give it to then that aside wacky plot and characters, it was genuinely fun early on. Like they tried to mix the 2D Metroids with Prime, used the 2 methods to hold the controller with certain upgrades only available in each side to encourage the switching, we had most skills available through it and while sometimes that made the game clunky I loved it.
But holy shit man, Other M has a ton of sparse areas. You quickly get bored out of it as you progress through it. After you beat the first boss, it soon becomes a chore to traverse and explore. THAT is what messed up the game. Because while there was a lot I liked, there was far more I disliked.
I have to admit I probably liked it more than Prime 4 because I went through Other M in one sitting, yet here I am struggling to stomach continuing it after clearing the Flare Pool.

3D game limited to the wiimote 2D movement. And QTE events and counters are not what Metroid should do (yes, Samus Returns and Dread as well).

Some of these ideas would have been revolutionary if they did them on the N64. But it was on the Wii.

>>
>>747609147
Except its good ideas were salvaged.
Mercury Steam's animations for Samus are obviously heavily inspired by Team Ninja's in Other M. And Other M's audio-visual effects for the power bombs has been used in every Metroid since (including AM2R).
Dread also carried the Diffusion Beam forward.
>>
>>747615612
It's baffling that they can write this and give it a 6 when it plays like shit.
>>
>>747615973
it all revolves around automatic 'qte' dodges that give you charge shots. the ideal way to play most encounters is to simply stand in place and wiggle back & forth because due to working with such a limited control scheme you activate a dodge by just hitting a direction before an attack. (and the window is very generous)

Actually, enemies in Metroid games drop critical health and ammo and deal a pretty significant amount of damage, so unless you're really good at avoiding confrontation, killing enemies is important because it replenishes your health and ammo.

If avoiding confrontation is too easy, there's no reason to kill the enemies.

>Metroid has always been anime as fuck.
It has some influences. But it's clearly way more influenced by western comics and movies. I mean, the main story is literally a retelling of the Alien film franchise. And then some other western film nods here and there for certain scenes.

The anime influences are kind of secondary. Like the suit and some enemy designs. And while I wish they'd play these up more, they're getting buried by cinematics and story. Just like Zelda's influences have been buried by Aonuma's obsession with cutscenes and lore over the years. I honestly wish Metroid would get back to focusing on upgrading the suit and hunting metroids. But thanks to Dread, that'll never happen now.

Men taking orders from higher ranking men is good. That's how the world works. Armies and chain of commands are baked into the human male psyche from hundreds of thousands of years of internecine warfare, perhaps even millions of years depending on how far back warfare truly goes.

Being part of a hierarchy filled with other men is noble and admirable, especially if you're given the opportunity to climb the social ladder within the hierarchy. Being the king's favorite and most loyal knight is /the/ male power fantasy.

Nah, modern Japanese media, especially manga/anime/light novels, are significantly better than not just their Western equivalents (no duh) but their own counterparts from decades in the past. Japanese storytelling has been in a golden age since the early 2010s, with or without copying Western themes. Meanwhile we in the West have been in a slump for the same amount of time.

Japanese sci-fi is every bit the equal of Western sci-fi, the last good thing we have going for us.

>did Metroid ever really have much of a story
For a long time, Metroid games had little to no dialogue. There was a story, but it was told purely through gameplay, environmental storytelling, and maybe a short explanatory cutscene at the start. Fusion was already a big departure for giving Samus occasional inner monologues and conversations with a computer. Other M took that and quadrupled down on it, with a bunch of cutscenes and characters and dialogue. On top of that, it was all hot, wet garbage. Even if it was well-done, it would still be a huge departure from the way Metroid worked, and the fact that it sucked was salt in the wound.

It's been explained many times in this thread. But the big points are:
-Giving Samus and voice and a backstory ruined her major appeal.
-You shouldn't have tons of story and cutscenes in a Metroid game. And then the story they wrote was terrible on top of that.
-Linear hallways and you're restricted from using items to explore until near the end of the game (this is a problem in most games after Other M to be fair)
-Tone is more like a shitty late Alien movie than a Metroid game.
-Gameplay is a lot of QTEs and dodges, which also shouldn't be how a Metroid plays (but sadly SR and Dread did it also)
>>
>>747617438
Boy you're going to get a lot of replies with this one. I'm actually someone who thinks there's plenty of good Japanese stuff these days. But I wouldn't say they're better than the old stuff. Just basically more of the same. Western media is destroying itself for virtue signaling while Japanese media is kinda just stuck in a feedback loop. But since the old stuff was good, new stuff being like it is good.

I would say that precisely because I am a fan of the old stuff too. But you know what? That extensive list spans 4 separate decades. Every year for the past 15 years we've had, at minimum, 10 new series of similar or superior quality.

Video games have taken a bit of a nosedive in Japan, but that's mainly because of the ratings agencies getting stricter forcing fanservice into gachaslop followed by Konami, Bamco, Capcom, Squeenix, Sony, and SEGA deciding that they wanted to chase either the gambling market or the Western market causing the quality of their games to nosedive. The eroge devs and Nintendo are still doing okay, but Nintendo's had a bit of an off year for the past 3 years and it's getting worrying whether they'll be able to save the latter half of the 2020s.

>>
>>747620809
Sakamoto wanted to downplay the Chozo, despite possibly even inventing those characters.
It's pretty clear in his mind, the Chozo were on their way out and Samus, Metroids and Motherbrain were their legacy. I believe shit like "Chozo can't even breed they're so old, they can't even fly" comes from the manga.

Raven Beak was a blessing because someone who clearly wasn't Sakamoto was questioning why the fuck Metroid story pins the Chozo as a big deal but then Sakamoto decides to glaze the fuck out of Mother Brain, the objectively least interesting villain in the series.

If you read the Manga, the Chozo basically kneel before a boring Not-HAL 9000 practically instantly and Mother Brain starts preaching her bullshit about how SHE actually genetically modified Samus into the strongest warrior making Samus her daughter. This is why Other M has such a weird thing going with MB. Raven Beak replaces that needlessly pointless bullshit by fleshing out the Chozo and giving her Bird Dad.
>>

>>
>>747621389

>>
>>747621562
No I enjoy that, Chozo were born out of the endless speculation of the Space Jockey before Prometheus ruined that.

It's just that, Mother Brain without more backstory just isn't interesting enough to be Samus's "mother".
The best Sakamoto could do is make her go "I was made to run the technological network of zebes but I've concluded I'm superior to my creators and so are the space pirates so I am their ruler".

It was dull and nonsensical, how are the pirates stronger than the Chozo? Why are you doing this? At least we know what motivated Raven Beak.
>>
>>747621780
Didn't the manga explain it by Mother Brain saying she's decided that it's survival of the strongest and she's destined to rule and control the galaxy? If anything Raven Beak saw her as a rival and would have either destroyed or forced her back into subservience, if there wasn't a war between him and his troops against Mother Brain and the Space Pirates.
>>
>>747621562
Now that the Metroids are gone and Samus is the lone Metroid, they're going to have to have some kind of focal point for the series. Or else it'll just turn into 'Samus and her aimless wanderings, where she gets lured to a planet and does dumb stuff' every game. Which sadly looks like is the next game. I hope there's more to it than just "I need to feed and escape." They'll probably pull the same thing that she was lured there by the Chozo or Space Pirates or something to try and get her DNA and revive the Metroids. I just hope this isn't every game from now on.

>>

There's that Mawkin general and his troops who need to be dealt with and look like will be appearing in Ravenous. The Ninjas likely lured or tracked Samus to ambush and devour her.. The Space Pirates are no more after everything between Metroid 1 and Fusion.
>>
>>747622343
>They weren't in Tourian. Only Tourian blew up in Metroid 1/ZM.
All of Zebes blows up in Super and they still come back in a later game.
>Ridley died permanently in Super.
He shows back up in Fusion, albeit in a frozen state. It implies he was alive because he needed to be kept frozen. But also the X was able to infect him. But also, we already have seen him "die" and come back multiple times. Plus the whole mess in Other M.

Basically, the games writers just bring back stuff on a whim. Death is meaningless in Metroid.
>>
>>747622739
That was the clone from MOM. Ridley as himself died for good in Super, and Samus devoured the last remnant of his existence in fusion.
>>
>>747622739
Fusion has Ridley's frozen corpse which is revived by the X-parasite. It's not that he didn't die, it's literally a possessed corpse.
>>
>>747620058

1. There shouldn't be a corpse if his corpse was blown to smithereens by Samus and then to molecules when Zebes blew up Super.
2. The X seem to leave a body when it dies. Though I guess they also turn the crew members into zombies so who knows how it actually works.
>b-but Ridley comes back in Other M
Which got made after Fusion. The point is, the developers don't think about it as much as we do and just bring them back on a whim.

Ridley in returns is to throw a bone to prime, as sais by others, but also to show how he survived 1 and returns for 3. i'll agree it was pointless fanservice but it was cool.

"Story driven" solo game full of QTE that would have been outdated 10 years ago.
Astronomical budget, in development for years hence why it's so dated on release.
Would need to be one of the best selling games of the year to break even while being platform-exclusive.
Culture warriors are mad that the writers upped the "lol Wolverie and Sabertooth gayyyyy" dynamic that had been a meme in the comics for ages.
It's another case of an overbudgeted solo game that's going to flop badly because all these huge solo games were in the conception phase 7 years ago and by the time they are complete, it's far too late and all the identified market trends they were based on are outdated
It's going to be outsold by the next friendslop game that goes viral after someone plays it oon twitch.

Sakamoto is one of those guys who loves to be subversive. I mean, his other IP are all about being weird for the sake of weird. And trying to push things others aren't doing. It works for WarioWare and stuff. But Metroid needs to refine itself. Not reinvent itself every game.

That said, 2D movement with a joystick is fine. Many games have done it. It's the other way that it becomes a problem. And even then, you can do 3D movement with a D pad. It just wasn't done well in Other M.

He explains why the "peaceful Chozo" would just randomly give a human orphan their technology and bio-enhancement. It works better and doesn't feel like it just wants to throw away the Chozo to focus on Motherbrain.

There are SO many better ways to do Motherbrain than make her "Samus's mother who thinks gay space Lobsters are just NEAT".

>It is understated how shit original Metroid 2 is for being limited by the hardware
It's arguably the best game hardware wise on the original GB. That or Mario Land 2. And I definitely prefer Metroid 2.
>The main issue with Samus Return is that A2MR exists which shits all over it.
The main issue with Samus Returns is teleporters, counters, some of the worst level design in the series and you have to come back to all the areas near the end of the game because of purple doors blocking your progress. It's basically all the flaws Dread had but 10x worse. And it doesn't have the solid Samus movement and bosses Dread had.
>>
Imagine if Mercury Steam were told to remake Super Metroid and make sure it ran on a Switch 1. Holy shit my money.
>>
>>747664930
That's basically what Dread is. It's a 3D game but you move in 2D. A lot of the other ideas Other M had were also reused. Like counters and QTEs. People just accept them in Samus Returns and Dread because they're not as shit.
>>
>>747666318
There's a glitch in Dread where you can make Samus face the camera and run to get a speed booster charge.
>>
>>747666268
Now you can't get 50% of the upgrades until the end of the game. And there's doors blocking every sequence break, to force you down the linear corridors they want you to go down. Also cutscenes everywhere. And Samus has a mental breakdown when Ridley appears.
>>
If they wanted Beyond to be true open world, they could have easily done it while also having the major areas be separate sections.

>hub area is huge and has different biomes that become more pronounced as you approach the "dungeons"
>filled with resources and enemies that serve as threats and also the source of more resources
>Samus' ship is the center point where you can save, refill health and ammo, and develop upgrades
>the major areas are where you get the major weapon and system upgrades (Ice Beam, Gravity Suit, etc) along with expansions, with the hub area having more expansions
>you use your beams and bombs and other systems to collect materials to upgrade your systems, rarer and more advanced materials and stronger enemies require upgraded systems
>each upgrade adds more effects: base Missile tracks and does concussive damage, mkII adds a drill tip for armor-piercing and removal, mkIII adds Seeker Missile capacity; Grapple Beam starts as it normally is and gets the Corruption GB properties with upgrades

I thought it was fine, but that's probably because I picked it up new for $5 at a Five Below. It must have sold like shit, because Nintendo never discounts their games; nor would they give brand new copies to a discount store...

>arguably the best game hardware wise
what does this even mean
the game is heavily limited by being extremely zoomed in and enemies being stuck outside the screen. Metroid 1 is far more enjoyable to play

yeah imagine remaking a perfectly fine game just so they can make it worse

Which is stupid because she was the one who enhanced her secretly in the manga.
I swear the only good thing about the Manga was Space Link and Space DK being Samus's comrades under Space Mario.

Weird, then why are there so many Dread sequence break videos?

>what does this even mean
>the game is heavily limited by being extremely zoomed in
This is why the game and Mario Land 2 has bigger sprites and better details than most GB games. The zoomed in screen and movement is even worse in Mario Land 2. But yet people totally overlook it in that game and then hate on Metroid 2.
>and enemies being stuck outside the screen.
I have no idea what you're talking about here. This is an issue in many games, even on the NES and SNES. Hell, Metroid 1 has enemies that appear on the opposite side of the screen if you move a certain way, just like Zelda 2 does. I don't remember any of that happening in Metroid 2. The Gamma and Omega Metroids actually have the opposite problem, getting stuck to the edge of the screen so they won't go off the screen and out of your view. Most other enemies just act like normal enemies. Except maybe that one automated gun that can only be found in one room in the whole game.

the cope with other M is that the translation into English and English VAing is garbage

and both are true, to be honest. It's just that it has more problems than just that

did we even play the same game?
Samus (2) can jump the size of the screen and enemies are way more dexterous and bigger than anything in Mario Land. The moment the an enemy leaves the screen it pops out of existence. You have virtually no room to dodge so most bosses are just tanking hits and killing it before it kills you.

Many older games have enemies pop out, but its usually less of an issue and they often still move. Metroid 1 is far less problematic in this regard

>Samus (2) can jump the size of the screen
She can do this in a lot of Metroid games. You just think it's a problem because of the smaller view of where to jump. I get it. But it's not really a big issue because
>You have virtually no room to dodge so most bosses are just tanking hits and killing it before it kills you.
By your own statement, you get to tank a lot of hits. Metroid 2 is not that hard of a game and very generous with energy. Unlike Metroid 1.
>The moment the an enemy leaves the screen it pops out of existence.
Again, I don't know where you're getting this from. Some enemies have set paths. They go off screen but don't get deleted from system memory. The most basic enemies like the flying bugs and the pancake floating enemies are the biggest example of this. They will go off screen but still follow their movement paths. On the flip side, Metroids will often stay on screen chasing you. As you already complained about. But this is to your advantage as you keep seeing them and can aim at them.
>Many older games have enemies pop out, but its usually less of an issue
It's far more of an issue in games like Zelda 2 and Metroid 2 where the enemies leave the screen and pop up on the other side. Or respawn after moving more than a screen away.

Fun fact. Metroid 2 also has an exploit where, after taking damage, you can perform an additional jump. In any situation. Even if you're in air. So you actually WANT to get hit by enemies so you can use it to alter your trajectory/momentum in air. Not to mention speed runners use it to reach areas faster (sequence breaking) and shave multiple minutes off their time.

I'm sure you can sequence break a little. I know of at least two places I found in my own playthrough. But you're not going to be able to use sequence breaking to get a lot of the upgrades as they're locked behind things that need the final beam, gravity suit and power bombs. Which you get basically 90% through the game. The power bombs are literally right under the final boss and Adam tells you to rush and beat him. But if you want to get the other 30% of the items you were locked from getting, you then have to stop and run back through every area of the game again to get them. And that number goes up to like 45% if you were being efficient and waited until you also had the beam and gravity suit. Since you get them all in the span of like 20 minutes before the end of the game.

This means 45% of the upgrades are locked until the end of the game. Same issue in Samus Returns. Except it's even worse in that game. There's also like 10 items locked until you get the baby metroid and you have to make yet ANOTHER special trip to get those, before running to fight Ridley.

Giving it less than a 7 is basically online reviewers telling the people too illiterate to read that it's time to abandon ship.
>>
>>747672507
A 7 is basically "it's shit but we have to keep the score above 5 because we got paid for the review."
