Why Nintendo walked away from Rareware?
The bitch from perfect dark is my formative boner experience
they were better than them at their jobs lmao.
>>747607753The key guys who were making good Rare games left halfway through the N64 life cycle. A lot of the companies later games had massive development problems. Especially Perfect Dark and DK64. And even more people left during the GC era. It was a dying studio and Nintendo saw it. Sold it to Microsoft who only wanted the IPs, not the talent. Microsoft got their wish and you see the results of focusing on IP name over talent.
>>747607753Because they humiliated Nintendo's programmers with their talent. Miyamoto had to sabotage Dinosaur Planet by making it into a Star Fox game. That game if it stayed as it's original identity would have beat OoT out of the water. It's not a coincidence they were sold to microsoft immediately after.
dk64 was so bad it killed the genre
>>747608037>That game if it stayed as it's original identity would have beat OoT out of the water. I've heard people say this before but I still haven't heard any reasons.
>>747607885You must have really liked her voice
>>747608295Look up the tech being use in Dinosaur planet. It's leagues ahead of Ocarina of Time. It was originally going to have the eye tracking Conker had and lot more. It was basically a truer open environment than oot. These brits were tech geniuses back in the day and the japs were jealous.
>>747608454I feel like Monolith does the same thing to Nintendo under its umbrella nowadays, but they are Japanese so it's okay.
>>747607753The Rare method of game design wasn't keeping up with the increasing difficulty of game development, and it affected the relationship. They kept teams totally separate, to the point that one room had no idea what the other was even working on. This was fine in an era where 20 lads in the countryside could crap out three games a year, but the realities of development were not sinking in, leading to wasting time and money on failed ideas, missing deadlines, and not having a clear direction as a whole. Conker starting over completely after making it to a playable state was bad, but having shit all for the release of the Gamecube as a result of that decision was the final straw. Nintendo owned 49% of the company and and they didn't want more than that. Also, people like to think it was an acrimonious split, but Rare had seven or eight games come out for the GBA/DS after the sale.
>>747608454Then it should still be better on gamecube.
>>747607753They weren't a properly run studio. Project Dream was worked on for 16 months and they restarted 4 times before they gave up and made it into Banjo-Kazooie. Goldeneye was supposed to be a railshooter at first and the multiplayer was tacked on at the end by a single programmer.
the only way nintendo would have acquired Rare would be on their own terms. The stamper bros were forced to cash out one way or another to keep the company functional, which is why they immediately sold to microsoft instead of keeping the status quo.
>>747607753I will always be salty Nintendo didn’t give Rare a proper chance at supporting the Gamecube and GBA. That would’ve required Nintendo having to purchase them which they didn’t…
Because Nintendo are fucking idiots a Banjo Remake with modern graphics would be incredible
>>747608037Fun Fact about Star Fox Adventures, it’s not only the last game Rare worked on with Nintendo but also one of the last games to credit Hiroshi Yamauchi as Executive Producer before his retirement as Nintendo President, other games include Wario Land 4 and Luigi’s Mansion.
>>747609194>I will always be salty Nintendo didn’t give Rare a proper chanceRead >>747608025Most of the best people were jumping ship from the company. They gave them like 6 more years to improve but the key people left pretty much after Goldeneye.
>>747609273>wanting banjo to look like Hire That Man slopThe XBLA version is perfectly fine
>>747608454Not only that, Dinosaur Planet was gonna have full on voice acting. In fact Conker already did it.
>>747608747Nihon Pride in a nutshell
>>747608817Yeah, it would have been better on gamecube IF it stayed Dinosaur Planet.>>747609469They were both in development at the same time which is why they share facial animation and voice acting.
>>747607753>bri'ishYou know why. The only thing they have in common is fucked up teeth. But at least the Japs brush theirs.
>>747610230Why would the dinosaur/star fox branding make such a big difference?
>>747610449It wouldn't have gotten any exposure as its own IP that's the difference. I like both fyi.
>>747607753>RarewareThey're not called that>>747608787Thank you for saying it I was gonna bring up the missed deadlines and rising costs
>>747610449The entire story and lore was completely changed. Star Fox Adventures tries to tell you that dinosaurs built the temples when it was originally Krystal's people who built them. I much prefer having Rare's soul over japs trying to market something.
>>747608037>>747610230>>747610618>>747610449EveryFuckingInterviewConfirmed it was Rare's final decision to make it a GameCube Star Fox game because they knew it'd make for stronger sales Rare has always historically compromised if it meant potentially stronger sales
>>747607753By the time Microsoft bought them there had been major turnover of employees. I think a bunch of devs left to make a James Bond game on PS1. The replacement employees weren't as seasoned and needless to say by the time Rare was up for sale most of what they were buying was IP. Perfect Dark, Banjo and Conkers were the only ones of any real value but Conker and Killer Instinct weren't even really Nintendo friendly brands. Which just left Banjo and PD. It wasn't worth 400 million of 2000s money to Nintendo. It's that simple.
>>747607753MS Paid more (to eat the company)
>>747611237Only the people who would find Free Radical left Rare before the buyout and they were leaving regardless Seavor, Mayyles, etc stuck around for years after Microsoft bought them
>>747607753>11 gamesAnd how many more than nintendo would they have made were it not for one of those games turning into one nintendo asked them to make.Thank you for your attention to this matter.
>>747610951>Confirmed it was Rare's final decision to make it a GameCube Star Fox game because they knew it'd make for stronger salesOkay, what about the devs that were interviewed who said they were disappointed to see their creation turn into something else? Of course people are going to say they're happy with what makes more sales because it's business. That doesn't mean the end result is better.
>>747612987>Okay, what about the devs that were interviewed who said they were disappointed to see their creation turn into something else?Link?
>>747612987It's not mutually exclusiveEven developers who released games that are still acclaimed lament what they had to compromise to get it out on timeThe fact is that Nintendo didn't try to sabotage Rare with Star Fox Adventures
>>747607753They could smell the shit rising from the fire with that shitty dinosaur game. They rejiggered it into a Star Fox game to salvage it then shipped these retarded bongers off. They were losing their edge and most of their N64 output isn't even that great, just overhyped by nostalgiafag millennials who ran the video game youtuber scene in the early-mid 2010s. Also kys OP.
>>747614063That shitty dinosaur game is an honorary Zelda game in this house
I do kind of wonder what kind of whacky shit Rare would've done with Gamecube peripherals.
>>747611884Uh oh...
>>747614063He sabotaged DP because he was sweating. He was scared it was going to rival OoT/MM and he wouldn't have it anymore since they already made him sweat on OoT. By proxy Rare is probably the reason they made OoT as good as they did.
>>747607753>mickey speedwayShocking that an N64 game that never previously existed could suddenly exist. oh wow.
