Can someone explain to me why Brutalist Jam 3 decided to have a female ranger
I can't HUUP properly if it's some shrill female voice.
Also holy shit Dawn of the Machine is pretty kino. What other quake mods can I play please not Arcane Dimensions/Alkaline

Fuck that's funny putting female voices in a map jam, that is 100% tranny shit.
If you've played AD already the only other map packs I enjoyed were Christmas and Halloween jams that used AD as the base.
Quake mapping community simply blows in comparison to Doom so when you're done playing the scraps they shit out once a month go play some really nigga shit after you've finished Ultimate and Final Doom with UV pistol starts.
I like q1 a lot though, what a pleasure. Q2 is a jarring departure but the expansions are actually pretty great.

Really impressed with Dawn of the Machine. The gimmick of starting gimped and finding health/ammo upgrades actually works pretty well for a one-off campaign, especially with the whole nightmare loop thing they're going for. I also really appreciate the creative use of the runes for progression. I especially like how effectively they use lower-tier enemies, I always thought vanilla Quake might've done well to mob you with dogs or something occasionally but it never did.

I especially like the new enemy variants. The kamikaze dogs especially are great. The levels are visually/atmospherically GREAT. I haven't played every level in Arcane Dimensions, but something to me about the episode feels better as an experience than AD. The levels are also loaded with secrets but I don't find myself getting secret fatigued like I do in AD. They're just the right amount, just difficult enough to find, and the prize always feels rewarding.

I was really impressed when it hit me how this game was structured. My first time through I was going in blind and assumed the runes must be related to some sort of super secret that you wouldn't find without knowing how to get them. Imagine my suprise when they hit you with the fact that you can loop back to old levels once you get them.

I can't imagine ever doing the Bloody Nightmare double playthrough and have no idea what sort of masochist that's for though.

I wish there were more medieval games with the gritty and brutalist aesthetic like the first Quake and Diablo.
Soulsslops are childish compared to this.

Sucks that the legacy for Quake singleplayer became the Strogg. I REALLY do not give a shit about the Strogg and their gay tech bases.
>>
>>747627759
If we ever do get another Quake game it will probably be more like the original. TDA and Champions showed whoever at Id cares about that stuff just really digs the aesthetic, if nothing else.
But then you risk le doomslaya writing creeping into a quake game.
And like, for doom it's camp fun and I can handwave it and even get a laugh out of it, plus the demon designs are gold, and use of glyphs right from the lesser key of solomon and that is all fine and dandy.
For quake it would be pretty egregious though, I'm not sure theyd be willing to play it straight.

Too repetitive. Only real shake up was that creepy level that had multiple vores jumping. And goddamn are the sounds those creatures make potentially more earape than spooky, potentially because you might not have headphones on that loud.
>>
>>747628182
>I'm not sure theyd be willing to play it straight.
Probably not. I do think they can nail the aesthetics of quake if they really tried. I haven't played all the nu-doom games but Those castles were really sexy. Lots of hard angles and clean cobblestone use, as opposed to having lots of jutting stones misplaced like every other game does these days.

The whole DEWM SLAYUR shit never sat well with me even in the beginning. I'm not necessarily opposed to giving Doomguy a little more meat as a character, but what was so great about him was he was literally just a GUY. His "badass" character always felt less like he was an innate brutal killing machine who's just the bestest at slaying demons and more like a regular dude under an IMMENSE amount of fear and stress that it turns into white-hot fury and forces your survival instincts and operating capacity into overdrive. That's what I feel as a player in Doom 1/2/64 when shit gets tough. If you've worked any kind of high-stress job, you've probably felt this in real life too.
>>
>>747624437
I genuinely hate the enemy roster and find it unpleasant to play despite loving Doom 1 and 2.
>>
>>747628540
>And goddamn are the sounds those creatures make potentially more earape than spooky
The alert sound for a vore triggers my fight or flight, but man the alert sound for a spawn can instill panic in me QUICK.

Speaking of sounds, I actually really like how in the soundtrack, one of them uses muffled grenade bounce sounds. There've legitimately been times where I got scared thinking there were grenades being lobbed at me, and there've been times where I ignored actual grenades being thrown at me because of it. I like when a game can fuck with me on that level.
>>
>>747624437
i didnt enjoy it. i played doom1 and thought it was great. played doom2 and quit halfway through because the maps were shit. played quake for a few maps then quit because i was just bored. maybe if i didnt play them all back to back so close to each other i'd like it more but it just wasnt as fun as doom1.
>>
>>747627759
If there's a Quake 5, I'm willing to bet that the Strogg will get a passing reference at best. The newer expansions of Quake 1 and 2 pretty well indicate what they want the series to be unless someone somewhere REALLY has a hard on for the Strogg and basically their story was completed by implying they were created through the influence of Shub-Niggurath and there's not really much more to say about them.

one of the best FPS game even to this day especially with source ports and map packs
and I don't know how can people enjoy Doom and other old FPS-like games with their rotating 2D sprites after Quake and Unreal
I say this as someone who played quake for the first time like 10 yrs ago

In a word novelty. people like clever tricks that mimic something with primitive resources.

The best part is when I get the quad power up.
The new expansion was fun, dwell was pretty good.
Brutalist had some drama attached to it I didn't like but I forgot about it.

Doom 2016 and eternal was basically our quake sequel.

but they look total trash like cardboard cutouts spinning around, it does not look like a clever trick, it reeks of lazyness and low standards

I liked the one in Dawn of the Machine where it's this old mansion and you reveal the big tech base behind the walls by the end of it.

I bought a pic related off of an old storefront Romero advertised but I've never beaten Quake 1.

It was pretty fun! The movement and how shooting feels is still great, could use bit more variety in enemies and episodes 3 and 4 can go fuck themselves. The extra episodes in the remaster were also good
>>
>>747631637
Yeah that reminded me of playing portal for the first time ages ago. That was my favorite.
That entire expansion was pretty soulful, the queen thing was a pretty fun concept too. Reminded me a lot of amid evil. Hope they don't get gutted by Microsoft for making something good
>>
>>747632098
>the queen thing was a pretty fun concept too
Yeah, that level was a standout to me visually and conceptually. I also love how they integrate the secrets into feeling like real secrets in the level. Like finding the secret with the hidden doggy playpen basement. Or the secret in the rune of sacrifice level where you find the first secret beneath the elevator, then find the second secret in the elevator. After hitting the switch it drops you into this flooded prison and just prints the message "Greed."

They really hit that crossroads of feeling like they belong in the world thematically, but also speaking to the player directly. It can't be overstated how much that's taken for granted these days.

No need for a gpu, everything was rendered on the cpu

I find Doom's gameplay to still be somewhat superior (multiplayer not withstanding, obviously)
>>
>>747624437
Overhyped boring FPS game. Even more than Doom 1/2. Doom at least has some good WADs.
