let's settle it, which one is the better game?
I'd never play as someone who wears glasses
>>747626317Opposing Force
1 is more fun but 2 gave us Gmod (Gay Mod)
HL2, but it also did more damage to gaming than any other game.
>>7476263171 is the game2 is the reddit movie
2 is more fun to play once. 1 is more fun to play repeatedly.
>>7476263172 and it's my #1 game oat>>747626395elaborate?
>>747626409No
>>7476263172 is a better experience as far as story and aesthetics go, and the physics tech blew me away. But from a pure gameplay perspective, a lot of enemies especially later on feel pretty spongey and not fun to fight. I think 1 is better as a shooter. And it's not to say 1 is lacking in the story or aesthetics department just that I think 2 did it better. So in conclusion, I dunno
>>747626459Physicalfag. They're retarded.
>>747626317HL2I don't like HL1 as much as everyone else. I find it mid, as the kids say. The nonsensical level design in places irks me more than it should.HL2 had that dumb seesaw and a couple of other dumb physics puzzles but the box smashing room and throwing Freeman, who is still alive, into a giant trash compactor with his suit still on trumps anything in HL2.also HL2 doesn't have Xen
>>747626317gameplay and aesthetic one 1, but the lore of 2 is really good. It's kinda a tie.
>>747626317I'll have to give it to the first gamethe second game has some amazing segments but they're sandwiched between so much mediocrity that it brings the whole thing down
>>747626651>also HL2 doesn't have XenYou spend more time standing around in HL2 waiting on scripts to play out than you do time in Xen.
>>747626317HL1 by far is the better game storywise. It was also revolutionary for its time. With HL2 they were chasing that edge and the game suffered. Sure, it was "better", better graphics, improved mechanics, new ideas, but nothing really rivaled the immediacy of HL1 or how mind breaking it felt to have those Xen interludes. A lot of the "new and improved" HL2 sections have also aged poorly (look there's vehicles, cars, boats! wait this sucks). The story also went up its own ass when it tried to expand the lore imo.
>>747626746disagree, HL2 was better storywise. Seeing the spiders in the distance was better than anything in HL1
>>747626712kek ain't that the truth
>>747626459HL2 normalized: >Digital distribution>Owning nothing, being happy>"We'll patch it later"™>Cinematic Experience>"Focus, M." walk and talk gameplayA world where HL2 flopped would be a better world.
>>747626712you need time to grab a soda or have some chips
>>747626317If I was stuck on a deserted island and had to choose only one to bring with me, I'd say Half-Life 1.If someone wanted to give the series a try and only had the time/patience to try only one, I'd recommend they play Half-Life 2.
>>747626893>HL1>Doom Rip-off
>>747626893retard
>>747626317Hl1. Combat has more variety.
>>747626801>"about that beer I owe ya" said barney n45>gauranga dude we space rastas>fuck my daughter gordon>yass escort the girl while she slays>quips quips quipslooking back, hl2's story blows fucking ass and rapes it's own lore to make it a more family friendly package, the proto reddit
>>747627105the story is literally "we fucked up" and the Combine rapes humanity. not sure how thats family friendly even if you dont like it
Well the first game actually has different weapons that you can use depending on the situation while the second game has>Automatic gun that you use until you run out of ammo>Shotgun>MagnumAnd the rest aren't even worth talking aboutAnd then what do you use them on? Well the first game has tons of aliens while the second game removed all those and replaced it with dumber shooty guys that you just use the same weapons on over and over for 15 hours. It's so mind-numbingly boring
>>747627148if only that was the ONLY part of the story but they can't keep a straight face for 5 mins. the original idea for the game had much darker setting but they pussied out and ruined it.
>>747627234the air was getting taken away by the combine but that was too dark and gives the player no point to try and win if you can't breathe or drink
>>747626893>Digital distribution>Owning nothing, being happyi originally played a pirated version through a non-steam client>"We'll patch it later"™tbf i was 12 when it dropped, can't quite remember it being broken>Cinematic Experience>"Focus, M." walk and talk gameplaybut enough about Fable"did more damage to gaming than any other game" is kinda disingenuous, especially considering modern turds that release daily
>>747626317hl1 is better if you are modern and playing both of them back to back. 2 is better if you were old enough to appreciate it when it was new and saw its set pieces and gimmick levels as novel or innovative. Both games have weak combat, but the combat in the first one is better.
>>747627307not sure what you mean by this. if the air exchange was a planned level, gordon would've went there to shut it down and restore hope.
>>747627364>can't quite remember it being brokenA lot of the game's shader effects had issues with a wide variety of AMD cards at launch, and it took them 3 weeks to fix most of them. Also general performance fixes, game used to hitch hard on explosions. Also DOG was infamous for his scripts breaking and just standing there.
>>747627230dont even get me started on how the pistol in 2 is a fucking pellet gun whereas 1 has a glock
>>747627429sure but that would have been ridiculous
>>747627475about as ridiculous as assaulting the citadel and blowing it up or?
>>747627525youd have to shut down their air ciphering facility? yeah way more insane
>>747627583so a worthwhile epic adventure, glad we agree
https://youtu.be/ct4OjjG7JT0>combine had freeman on their radar the entire time>they let him walk freely on purpose so he could lead them to the resistanceEveryday I learn something new about this game
>>747627650I mean it would be in space most likely, or low atmosphere. would be a stupid endeavor at best
>>747627657their megabrain plan backfired, they should've just raped freeman
>>747626317Half-Life 1 is the more fun setting, but HL2 is starting to feel underappreciated. Maybe because people always rag on the vehicle segments. But even those are not bad at all.
>>747627690sure thing breen, now suck on an alien grub and watch the freeman work
Most of not all of HL1's innovations were inconsequential to gameplay, it's a solid foundation. Most of not all of HL2's innovations were consequential to gameplay, and if that wasn't bad enough, the pacing got fucked with a sprint meter.
>>747627775The Combine wants to share oxygen with humanity, don't be foolish
>>747626317hl1 extremely influential, but i hate style. Shooters used to be mazelike but now they're linear and cinematic
>>747627813the pacing is fucked, but the sprint meter is one of the last culprits, there's so much other shit that makes you crawl or stop
>>747627726No I really fucking hate playing 2 man. Like enemies in 1 might have too much health sometimes. But the combine are a non threat and die in one headshot and its really easy to land because they barely move the combat just sucks. And when youre not shooting youre ddoing some kind of gimmick bullshit.
>>747628003AI is way better in episode 1 and 2 tho
>>747628003I bet you loved it when they took away all your faggoty weapons at the end and gave you the superduper grav gun. Epic for the win amirite?
>>747626317HL1 is the better shooter. HL2 is the better game
>>747628049Yes
>>747628003I will grant that enemy variety is far too thin in HL2. Combine grunts (including Civil Protection) are 95% of the roster. I would have liked to fight more truly alien things like Bullsquids and Houndeyes (but something new). Antlions are only the start of what I want.
hl 2 didnt pass a test of time at all.tech demo. its suprise me that anyone even brings it up
>>747628062
>>747628049There's nothing wrong with letting players be overpowered for a short stretch. Don't be so fucking cynical.
>>747628109does it surprise you? i dont think it does
The music in HL1 fucking slaps.
>>747628120HL1 is more fun as a simple shooter. But HL2 has a much better story, made the lore much interesting, and overall is the better experience.
>>747628120I mean, I could see how he could say that with physics props being a thing. HL2 is a bonified toybox.
>>747628184correct but youre forgetting episodes 1 and 2 are way better technically as well but sadly are not remembered properly
>>747628151Unfortunately it was the last stretch of the game, and it wasn't that short. It felt like they just gave up and threw away the regular gameplay for pingpong mechanics as if more gimmicks at the last moment were needed.
>>747626317sven coop
>>747628264I was ready for HL2 to be over by the time it gave us the super grav gun. So I don't even mind. It's not like you weren't sure if you had mastered fighting combine and combine elites by then.Would I have taken new enemy units instead? Sure, but whatever. We didn't get that and I'm over it.
>>747626317HL1's gameplay feels more fun. HL2's story is more engaging. It just depends on what you are in the mood for.Simple as.
>>747628264youre being too cynical, the good guy should kick ass at the end and thats what they were going for
1 has better enemies, better weapons, and a better feel2 is too focused on gimmicks to make up for the base gameplay being mediocre (bad weapons, not many enemy types)
>>747628049no its just another gimmick lol fuck you
>>747627813>HL2's innovations were consequential to gameplaySuch as?
>>747628564heres the problem, every FPS innovation was from Goldeneye which PC fags can't admit a console shooter did it first
>>747628564All of the physics shit? The only time you ever get to use them in combat were the turrets, which you didn't need a fancy physics system for handling knocking them over.
>>747628564Vehicles are the most obvious example. Prop physics means the gravity gun which means almost all the other weapons are shit. Facial technology means more moments where you're stuck in a room waiting for NPCs to stop talking.
>>747628667nonsensical
>>747628615>every FPS innovation was from Goldeneyelike what
>>747628771literally everything. AI reactions, enemies limping, distracting with sound. nothing was like that before in an FPS. ok maybe Thief 2 or something but even then it was mediocre
>>747628934Goldeneye came out at a time where lots of games were doing those things, It was only a year before Half Life 1
>>747629032correct it did it before HL1 and when shooters were focused on fast Quake like retardplay.
>>747629094Games have multiple year development cycles, if Goldeneye came out less than a year before Half Life then Half Life didn't copy itThere were also lots of FPS games more advanced than Quake by then
>>747629154>There were also lots of FPS games more advanced than Quake by thenname 2, not even memeing. The AI and physics of GE were way ahead of anything else from what I remember
>>747629290I haven't actually played Goldeneye so I don't know what exact features it had
>>747629401you play as James Bond, he's a spy from the UK
>>7476263171 but they're both mid.
>>747627364>especially considering modern turds that release dailyYou see that's exactly the problem. HL2 normalized all this shit. No HL2 back then to make it normal, you wouldn't see it daily today. HL2 was a great game, with a legacy that hurt gaming. The lessons the industry learned from HL2 was gamers want interactive movies more than games, they want cinematic experiences, big scripted moments, voice acting, facial scans and animations, you don't need to release a good finished product at launch you can rush it out the door and just patch it later, and gamers don't need to own their games, renting from digital library is enough for them. Nearly every bad practice in the gaming industry today was normalized by HL2.Great game, but its success ruined gaming, a world where HL2 failed would have been a better world.
>>747629508theres maybe 5 minutes of cutscenes total, and that might be high
>>747629508Imagine thinking HL2 invented movie games
>>747628615Ok well like on a more fundemental level>elevated terrain>doors>stairsthese things were PC innovations. So get fucked.
>>747629657Goldeneye was released in 1997. I was nice and mentioned Thief 2 (2000 release date) even though it stole from GE
>>747629821You could distract enemies with sound in the original DoomHalf Life had enemies that could literally smell you
>>747626375Based. Opposing force is way better than hl1 and I don't even know why.
Gravity Gun absolutely clears it.
>>747629894you could distract enemies with sound and smell in Ultima
>>7476263172 because I played it first
>>747629821Right but the games that normalized doors, stairs, and elevated terrain are pre goldeneye PC exclusives not sure why ur opposed to that. Also Unreal has more graphics innovations and its not console based or goldeneye derivative.
>>747630012who cares if its console based? Goldeneyes innovations were based on it being a single player game first and then just happened to catch on with multiplayer anyways
>>747630104idk apparently you do like I thought that was your whole point
>>747628667They weren't first and I dont see them as very innovative either.Gravity gun is fun but shines mostly in ravenholm because it was desinged around it.Here have this 2 minute section where this one prop cuts this one specific enemy in two and then pretty much never use it again. All of hl2's "innovations" are like that cinderblock ramp puzzle at the start, tech demo like proof of concept shit that while novel the first time for a minute is immedietly forgotten and of no real consequence, lots of people on release were too dumb to even realize it was a mechanic showcase and just brute forced the puzzle by sprinting and jumping ignoring the props entirely.2's vehicle sections are kind of opposite of innovative. Now instead of literal cart on a rail shootout sequence you get the ability to... turn slightly left or right on an equally railroaded as fuck one path driving section that doesnt really differ in practice at all.
>>747630173nope im just saying Goldeneye was ahead of its time, and was super influential, console or not idgaf
>>747630197>tech demo like proof of concept shitwhat the fuck does that even meanit's not "proof of concept" it's an actual polished video game
>>747630225ok...well yea it is really good and influential and innovative. I really like the loading and menu screen muusic.
>>747630225Half Life was super influential and it didn't copy Goldeneye
>>747630264what loading on N64 lmao, did you even play it?
>>747630282its pretty much GoldenEye but worse from a technical perspective. They definitely were playing it all day at Valve during crunch
>>747630408You can't steal core features from a game that came out less than a year before your game did dumbass
>>747630457there was like 100 people combined at most working on both games, of course you can
>>747630519100 people cooking a roast won't make it cook fastercore game features need to be implemented into the engine before you build content ontop of itso you can't just play a game and go wow, this game has skeletal animation, lets put that in our gamebecause then you need to implement the feature then remake all your models so they have skeletal animation
>>747630234Esl or retarded? I'm not talking about the game in its entirety obviously.Im talking about the "puzzle" itself and all other one off/half baked shit like it because their gimmicky and one time use makes them seem like an afterthought/some guy just testing whats possible early on in developement that wasn't dedicated any real time, which is the opposite of "consequential to gameplay".A released game can have a bunch of unpolished individual things, like a spas shotgun with an alternate fire for its """"2 barrels"""" or an smg that fires grenades despite not having a grenade tube because the guy making them was a dumb noguns.
>>747630709proof of concept is different to an afterthought, and it was neither, they focused on physics-based gameplay right from the very startand the lame guns weren't unpolished, they were intentional
>>747630572in a turn of the century FPS? a year is enough to add new shit when you have the basics down pat
>>7476263171
>>747630771Depends what that shit isSomething like AI, no, the entire game of Half Life is designed around the AI, you can't just rip that feature off quicklyMaybe if they saw an enemy or weapon design they liked they could have
hl2 was a very bland game, the best thing about it was the source engine and all the mods/games it spawned
>>747630871the source engine was used for like 2 games outside of Valve and one of them sucked
>>747630834>the AI enemy retreated after a knee injury>we can't do thatof course they could
>>747630834>>747630975https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/07/random_valve_supposedly_made_changes_to_half-life_after_playing_goldeneye_007
>>747626893Without HL2 and, by extension, Steam, PC gaming would probably have died out during the PS3/X360 era.
>007
>>747630975The locational damage or the retreatingCause neither of those are really innovative, lots of games did it
>>747626317Half Life 3
>>747631073i was just using an example but see >>747631007
>>747630765>guns weren't unpolished, they were intentionalNewfag.I'm sure you think the fucked up mirror models in counter strike were "intentional" too.
HL1 was scientist guy in scientist place (cool) then alien place (also cool but a lot of people didn't like it)HL2 was scientist guy in bulgaria (?) and everyone fellates him as a god (?) and a third of the game is driving on desert or swamps, and there's a bunch of physics puzzles because we gotta show off our engine. also the love interest is brown but its ok when valve does it
>>747631248The mirror models in CS were because the modeller liked to do them that wayThe guns in Half Life 2 were shit, but they were intentionally designed that way
>>747626317I don't care.HL1 is FUNHL2 is FUNThat's what gaming is about!Having fun!
>>7476263172 led to gmod letting me pose Alex Vance in sexy positions
>>747626317I prefer HL1 (modded)
>>747626317I played 2 first and then 1.Half-Life 1 has aged a lot better than Half-Life 2 because it has a greater reliance on gameplay than 2 does, the latter showcases advancements that are already commonplace in the industry whereas 1 has a more direct and robust gameplay, on top of having far less cutscenes.
>>747630342maybe im thinking just of the menu music, like where his watch becomes the screen
>>747626419/thread
