Develop some taste. I don’t mean >play better gamesI mean figure out what you like in games and look for more of that. For example I like turn baste games and games that fuck you up the ass with a rake and I’m mulling over Quasimorph or Mewgenics next after I finish the Pokémon Clover romhack. I will probably play GTA VI but it’s secondary to my primary gaming interests. The AAA space occasionally produces games I like but it’s not what I’m depending on for good games if that makes sense.

I think it's just from playing so many games over a lifetime. Unless it's a game from a series I like, I find I don't even care about the story until the game shows me why I should give it my time, especially if the story doesn't hook me right away. They'll be talking about places and people and it just sounds like gibberish to me until I see some gameplay.
