Which lead to Metal Gear being relegated to the PSP, and Peace Walker completely fucking up the technological timeline of the setting by introducing multiple giant death robots that were inarguably more advanced than the giant death robots from Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. (The Shagohod was mostly fine by comparison. It was just a really big tank, if you squint at it)

Culminating in Metal Gear Solid V just completely going off the rails and telling everyone in the audience to go fuck themselves.

Kojima's entire career at Konami was built around trying to make something, anything, other than Metal Gear. And as soon as he was done with them, he pivoted to something so avant garde it was polarizing at best, and irredeemably boring at worst.

Sony tried to squeeze a sequel out of that, and it flopped because they went out of their way to make Death Stranding 2 even more of a slog.
