You do have eye tracking set up on your vrchat model for the steam frame right?
>>
If nothing else, the release of the Steam Frame means that people will stop making shit up about the price every single time there's any news about it whatsoever.
>>
>>747637448
Is it true that the Steam Frame only tracks your eyes and your eyes only, meaning no eyebrows, no blinking, etc? Because that would be lame as shit.
>>
>>747637854
The current leaks are that valves core model will only track gaze, so no blinking, eyebrows, etc.
The workaround is that baballonia is a 3rd party eye + face tracking platform that's very likely going to be working on steam frame day one as the devs have kits and are working on hardware for the front port.
Baballonia is basically used by everyone using Index eye tracking and most who have BSB 2e's.
>>
>$5000 for mediocre hardware

valvesissies... how could this be?..
>>
>>747637854
Yeah because it's not for vrc troons but for eye tracked foveated rendering + streaming.

>But what i-
You're not gonna get picked. You're going on the waitlist, and you are going to end up paying more than what the people who did get picked are because the price will go up by the time your turn comes up.
>>

There's seriously no way to play wired with this thing though? I would like wireless to be an option for certain games and shorter sessions, but I feel like I'd just asking for brain cancer if it's always beaming such a strong signal right on my head .
>>
I believe in europe
I will be chosen as one of the first
You need to have faith

>>747642739
You can apparently do wired via usb-c with the foveated streaming, not sure if it'll be in on release but they're working on it
And surely with all the FCC certification nonsense it doesn't send super cancer into your cranium from the wireless streaming

Even with us all knowing how safe government organizations will always keep us, it just seems weird not to include a higher bandwith wired connection in the first place. >>
>>747646709
One of the few positive contributions of meta is bankrolling displays like that will get them cheaper. And if they fucked off apple and google/samsung and bytedance would still do it, but I still give credit. If all the players in VR hardware were small timers like valve in some PCVR paradise, displays would never progress. No one is going to invoke alien technology to make 8k camera viewfinders.

still don't know if I'd actually pull the trigger if I get approved. Last headset was an Oculus Rift S that, after I played HL:A, collected dust. Major sticking point was that it was wired. A wireless frame seems to solve that issue for me. But do I spend $1,050+tip for this shit?

I did sell my Rift S for $550 mid-COVID. If I hate the Steam Frame I could conceivably sell it at a profit to some desperate dummy.

We have. Go look up how almost all big name glasses manufacturers are owned by the EssilorLuxxotica company. Like even when you see that there are "oakley" or "prada" or whatever frames in your prescription eyeglass shop/exam/optometrist etc.. they're always trademarks in partnership with luxxotica.

The problem with Zenni and many others unfortunately now who make "cheap" alternatives is they often lack the specialization in both frame/lens types. You need super high index lens with all the fancy coating? Nope, no luck - though this is slowly changing. You want frames that aren't big blocky plastic hipster glasses? This hasn't changed as quickly; its hard to get like titanium rimless frames through all of these "we are the cheap quirky alternative online" shops like Zenni or Warby Parker.

Alyx isnt raising the price really, but the controllers here have to be different as they're not using the Lighthouse tracking system by default (though supposedly you 'll be able to get some kind of adapter thing for the Frame to make use of Lighthouse tracking accessories down the road), which is what lets the Frame be fully wireless.

I too own an Index but I think the Frame has some nice upgrades in certain regards including the wireless bit. The price is probably a lot of it being the stupid as fuck pricing thanks to storage / RAM; I imagine it was probably $200-400 cheaper originally. I'm guessing Valve is also pricing it with a bit of leeway so that they don't need to jack its price when they make further batches. We're in an era where SSDs that would have been fucking $40 a year or two ago are selling for $150.

While I agree that the option to connect wired should have been there at launch, wireless is a major factor of convenience and comfort. If you knew you'd have the same quality/reliability wired and wireless, I can't imagine too many times to prefer wired . It has other benefits, but I'm pretty sure Valve had to go wireless because there arent enough people who would buy a wired only headset at this point after seeing the wireless options - even if they were proprietary and fucked up phone-strapped-to-face ones, many didn't understand or care.

>>747661949
Color passthrough is now an option and at MUCH higher resolution - https://arcturus.vision/ . I guess they were trying to keep prices down and knowing that only people who really care about mixed reality/AR stuff will want passthrough (aside from some professional use or other shit. With Arcturus I can imagine its going to be one hell of a drone controller device) they went with B&W for the baseline "don't stub your toe or crash into shit outside your playspace because you flail around" but left the upgrade for those who wanted the color ultra high res stuff.

>being nickle and dimed
greyscale/monochrome passthrough is still industry standard. Only headsets that have color are AR first and VR second. Additionally it was made clear this was not a top end device - its being marketed as a medium/high end option that would be available within most people's budgets and have valve backing it. Look at the price of other headsets that have full color passthrough. For a gaming focused VR headset color passthrough is a nice to have but hardly a necessity as most people will be using it to just find their waterbottle or whatnot. Having it as an optional module was actually a really cool move because for the few people that actually want the passthrough will be able to have it.

Headstrap i can kind of agree with you on, however i have no idea how it will feel with whatever the default kit is. That being said though the default strap for the quest2/quest3 was also pretty shit and 3rd party is where you wanted to go with that anyways. I could potentially see and argument for valve figuring everyone would go 3rd party or make custom fittings for it anyways and didnt want to lower their already thin or negative margins including something a majority of people are going to throw away/replace right away anyways. Hard to say before its released.

>fucking astounding levels of greed
are you joking? Have you seen the cost of hardware lately? For whats in it, it should cost way more than it does. if valve is actually profiting off of it past the first batch they got with component pricing from last year id be incredibly surprised. The price was about $500 less than was was expecting for the base unit and likely is being subsidized by them going forward so they can build up marketshare. The price of ram and storage alone makes this thing's price increadibly reasonable and id argue really good value in Q3/Q4 2026.

If you want to hate on it though, go ahead - show me how much similarly specced devices cost right now.

I'm gonna be honest guys. After doing some research and checking out comparisons between the index and the frame, and seeing that the frame is ultimately not made as a dedicated gaming pcvr headset and is more of a shitty ass headset, I think I'm not buying.

Guess we'll see. Given the thing has eye tracking and both supports FOVated streaming by default on everything and FOVated rendering on anything engine wise that supports it, even if there are some it may very well be accurate that you'll never see them. They seem to be betting a lot on this tech. I still object to not being able to just hook up a displayport cable to the thing by default, because I always like having wired backup, but we shall see I suppose.

The problem with subsidizing products is that the ones doing it generally have contracts that make it cheaper so it doesn't hurt as much.
Valve has NO influence in that industry as proven by the steam machine, so it would be a lot worse than like consoles or fb do it, as they have stablished contacts in the industry, and now is specially worse when even AI companies get much more priority than old clients.

Yes, and yes. Modern PC VR games use openxr now, so specific headset compatibility for PC games hasn't been big issue for a while. For Linux, you can't use the official Meta software (why would you want to?), but WiVRn can stream from a Linux PC to a Quest 3 and many other headsets.

This was true for the Steam Deck and Linux because it was so affordable when it came out ($350). So many new people joined Linux, devs actually started giving a shit about Linux more.
That's not going to be the case over a new $1000 headset for VR unfortunately.

ive put a lot of hours in vr with my quests, but honestly having something that just fucking works with my normal library, even standalone, without dealing with all of metas bullshit forced compatibility dances will be worth it for me.

>>747664087
generally yea. Base stations are pretty ass and theres tons of viable fullbody tracking solutions that dont require them. If you're trying to do some hyperaccurate motion capture stuff or like if you're a VR idol and do performances then you might actually need that level of accuracy - but even then most of the tech being developed over the last few years has been without base stations in mind.

>>747663913
of course. it's a shame they can't lower the price. Even as a meme it's cool, but not when the entry price is $1300+ (including ergo kit and color passthru).

The actual experience of using VR is cool. Playing games in VR is very cool. Even boring shit like walking simulators are very cool in VR. The social possibilities of VR are very cool (not troony VR chat, but in a world where all my friends had VR headsets and we could 'hang out' virtually since we all live hundreds/thousands of miles apart now).

But the price makes this shit DOA. It wouldn't be a stretch on my finances to buy a $1300 toy but it immediately goes up against all the other 'nah probably not a good use of $1300' impulses that I've been vetoing. I could get a 4k240hz OLED HDR monitor for $1300 and use it every day. I could get a pair of extremely nice speakers for $1300 and use them every day. I could get an extremely comfortable computer chair for $1300 and use it every day. Or I could spend $1300 on a device that I'd most likely use for a few months and then shove in a box before selling it on the secondhand market.

Retards don’t understand that Q3 is "cheaper" because Facebook sells it at a loss. And you pay the difference with YOUR data, YOUR privacy, and YOUR behavior, which is analyzed and sold to Palantir.

On the other hand, Steam Frame comes pre-installed with GNU+Linux, and it lets you install whatever you want, even Gentoo. It doesn’t collect your data or spy on you. You pay more to avoid being ad cattle and to be a free white man.

Well, it can stream live from whatever PC you have, or it can run Linux on ARM but using their "Proton for ARM" techwhich name I forget that basically translates X86-64 to ARM64 and viceversa. However you don't have to run the games themselves ON the headset's hardware, it can just be there to accept the streamed content from your PC as a client.

>>747664150
This is how Index is sold years after the original launch because people needed replacements and updates. At the beginning all you could buy was the full kit . That's how I bought mine. I'm sure they'll sell individual controllers or HMD down the line.

>>747664381
There is both FOVeated rendering and FOVeated streaming, which can do different things. Its both latency and bandwidth and its as much a workaround as anything that deals with wireless usage at the rest of the features and fidelity involved.

If it was up to me I'd want to have an easy comparison with a direct wired hookup but apparently all the newfags these days simply won't accept anything that's not wireless and thus Valve didn't want to pay for having a custom displayport plug and/or breakout built in that almost nobody would use. I've always been against lacking a backup but I guess Meta broke everyone's brains that wireless is now "easy and fine/good enough" while also stealing all of their information .

shit aint cheap, even for companies. you speak as if valve will be making billions from this thing. Meanwhile the reality is they are likely barely breaking even and likely even taking a loss on it for a long time when you factor in research, development, and support.

Valve's real cash cow is the steam store. If they didnt have that backing them up the frame would likely not be a viable product at that price in current times.

>>747664460
all components went up in price massively. Yes, i know its qualcom and not DIMM/SODIMM but you're also forgetting that getting fab time is incredibly expensive. Making a run of chips, even smartphone grade chips is way more expensive than last year, making any sort of ram, dram, or flash memory is way more expensive than last year, component pricing on everything has gone up. Ever since the Quest line came out with that sort of inside out tracking and wireless devices, without controllers that had sort of the Index Knuckles sort of "strapped onto your hand" design (which I always liked and gave excellent finger tracking) , people started bitching about it.

I am guessing they're selling this shit as extra because they know some people will just go and buy some 3rd party accessory instead and would whine about increasing the price any little bit if it was included by default yet most would ignore it and either get a premium first party or third party accessory. Meta actually di the same thing awhile ago before they put in the fancy battery headstrap and it still cost way more than this.

just because you have high bandwidth doesnt also mean you have high speed. Additionally 99% users will be using this in the same room or area as their pc will be in to begin with. I actually kinda like that its on 6ghz as well because for people that live in apartments or other highly dense areas the frame will be less likely to have to deal with interference, which for how much data that thing will be transmitting for video alone would be incredibly noticeable. Wireless signals start getting really fucky really fast, and the more capable the signal the more regulation there is around it in the west.

id imagine the edge case multi-room users would be able to setup some sort of mesh network type thing or use some sort of usb extender for the dongle if they had like a large playspace area in a different room than their computer.

Rather than releasing it at this shitty price, they should have released a frame with super low memory that's solely for PC streaming at Quest 3 price.

>But we know how much shit costs
no you clearly dont.

>We can compare how much it costs to the Quest 3
oh, the same quest 3 that meta has admitted to selling at a loss for the last couple years? Meta subsidizes their hardware because their actual product is their data collection and sales. They have been pretty open about the fact they lose billions of dollars on vr hardware sales and development, but that they use it to support their actual core business of data collection.

Comparing something positiones as a viable product to something being sold at a loss is just as retarded as you are.

Wifi7 apparently. What tech do you think they should have used?

So you think this is a good solution then with the dongle and WiFi7? I though the anon earlier was implying something different but obviously there are two different people taalking about this same issue

I'm right there with you buddy, but the frame is so clearly aimed at people who don't give a shit about privacy, who will probably end up picking up a quest 3 for cheaper and more storage. I've already seen them in frame threads.
