If you like AC2 absolutely play Another Age, its builds on everything AC2 did.

Nexus might as well have been called AC4 for how much it changed the formula of AC3, it feels like a totally different game. More changed between AC3 and Nexus than between AC2 and AC3.

A game being a "main" numbered entry only means it's the first game of that generation. Sometimes the latter games are shorter than the main one but they're still worth playing.
You can transfer your saves upwards within the same generation so you can start with more parts unlocked. (eg. Armored Core 2 -> Another Age).
Note that Nexus -> Nine Breaker -> Last Raven are their own generation separate from gen 3 (AC3+Silent Line).
Formula Front is a meme PSP game that is pretty different than the other games. If you want to skip any game, that's the one. Nine Breaker could be skipped too because it's just arena battles (I think you can save transfer straight from Nexus to Last Raven).
