1 > 4 > 2 > Pre-Sequel > 33 is the only one where I actively wanted to blow my head off while playing it. the gameplay doesn't redeem it whatsoever.PS is just 2 with incomprehensible aussie writing and semi annoying low gravity but a slam to compensate for it. no slag at least. it's ok.2 I enjoyed as much as 1 at the time, but don't feel the need to replay it anymore because the vibe isn't as good as 1, and 4 is more fun to play.4 has recency bias but the movement is the most fun and I like the grenades and overall gun feel. the writing is far less annoying than 3 and PS.1 just has unmatched tone and atmosphere. so much so that it doesn't matter that the gameplay is crusty now, it's still the best one anyway.

the outer space one is the only game, ever, I have actually stopped playing entirely because of the writing. I just couldn't bear it any longer. I enjoyed the gameplay which should be enough for a game, and I enjoyed the space ambience. the embarrassing, unfunny, zero effort writing I could deal with and ignore. even the ham-fisted 'yeah I'm gay, I'm really gay did I mention I'm gay, I'm gay' dialogue, I could ignore. but by the fifth or sixth mission with the fifth or sixth variation of a husband/boyfriend being unaware that his wife/girlfriend is being anywhere from resentful of to unfaithful with him, I just felt like a stupid prick for willingly playing out the writer's cuckoldry fetish, and stopped playing. how did it ever come to that, from the first borderlands?

It's entirely possible to end up with an S&S (high clip count) weapon that also has competitively high fire rate, damage, and accuracy. BL2, brands felt a lot more "locked-in" to their gimmicks. Meanwhile BL3 doubled down on a lot of the gimmicks each manufacturer had in BL2, so torgue isn't just explosions, but either direct or delayed explosions, with multiple ways to make things explode even more. Maliwan is still all elemental, but now every gun has 2 elements you can swap between and also sometimes straight up lasers. BL3 had a lot of really good ideas mechanically it expanded on from 2 and the Pre-Sequel, but you'd still have to deal with it's absolutely shit story and characters and that's a bridge too far for some people. Understandably so, it's the 2nd worst written game from Gearbox. New Tales from the Borderlands managed to be even worse.

I think the people who don't like it must be disappointed storyfags who just can't stand the occasional 20 seconds of talking from characters they don't feel attached to. The gunplay is excellent and the difficulty scaling is FAR better than BL2. With BL2, TVHM felt good and then UVHM felt impossible. With BL3 once you start on the Mayhem modes it's a steady march upwards that feels good. And if it's too hard, you can just go with Moze and be an unstoppable god about halfway through the first playthrough.The only real downsides to 3 are: absolutely everyone and everything is gay or bisexual, and the game showers you with legendaries once you hit TVHM, so you end up with much more static character builds as you hit the high levels. As far as characters: remember, the characters people remember from BL2 are almost always the characters from BL1. Brick, Mordecai, Lilith. Tina is new and weird and you might say Salvador is interesting. But the other 3 new vault hunters are completely forgettable personality wise. BL3 is pretty much the same, with Zane being the one exception.
