Was gaming in the 00s really that great?
>>747640513Yes. The PSP was as impressive as a steamdeck was at launch and was a third the size and 10x the aesthetics.
It's literally the same, the games and hardware from back then still exist now.
>>747640513Yeah
Not if you had a psp, that piece of shit had MGS peacewalker and then nothing else. Absolute garbage handheld that deservingly died early.
>>747645167Local monster hunter multiplayer was the best thing ever and having one device that could game properly and also play all your multimedia is still sorely missed.
>>747645167PSP was the patapon machine for me
>>747640513Early and mid-2000s was peak. Franchises were still adapting and perfecting the shift to 3D. Consoles had the power to render actual art styles, but not enough where the dev time focus was purely on HD detail. PC games existed in a bubble where good game design was rewarded by a user base that understood quality. On one end of the spectrum, you had extremely charming games like Katamari, Okami, Shadow of the Colossus or Chibi Robo. And on the other, you had prestige AAA like Half Life 2, TF2, BioShock, MGS2/3, or FFX. Not all of these were high art, but there was some level of artistic intent. Everything began to change around 2007, when the influx of console gamers led to a lot of homogeneity. Art styles converged towards brown, playstyles converged towards military FPS, control schemes converged towards standard ABXY for multiplat simplicity. The industry shifted from entertainment to product. The Wii and Xbox 360 massively expanded audiences in a way that meant we'd never have the expectation of game literacy, and the industry has suffered immensely as a result. The sins of the 2010s were really planted in those last few years.
