Video games have this special problem because it's the only active artform.Music, film, reading etc. are all passive, you don't have to actually DO anything to experience them. I feel u OP, it can be difficult to find folks who are fans of gaming as a whole and are interested in experiencing the breadth of the medium and value cultivating taste through experience and exploration, rather than sticking to and defending whatever low hanging dopamine-peddling slop they are used to. It’s not like one even needs to be beating games constantly to expand their knowledge and taste, most of a games worth can be determined within the first few hours. But to entirely dismiss experiencing new genres because of lazyness or a lack of intrinsic wonder is wild. So many younger folks I’ve talked to claim that a game has aged poorly strictly because of graphical presentation or “dated” mechanics, when in reality their brains and mental reward systems are so fucking fried that they can’t possibly conceive the concept of learning a game rather than it being so retardedly simple that it is mastered upon clicking the play button. I myself have within the last few years gotten into fixed camera survival horror and shmups even though I hadn’t had much prior experience with the genres beforehand because I care to expand my understanding of the art form and want to continue to experience all the great that is out there. I think those who waste away their hours on the same stupidly simple brain waster games have a level of autism I cannot comprehend. I am saddened that so many promising devs are forced to waste many hours remaking already solid and readily available titles in order to cater towards a generation that requires overly processed shit in order for their attention to be held.
