It's real simple. Nintendo recognises restraint, keeping their budgets manageable and their scope within reason. If a game doesn't meet sales expectations, that's fine, because other investments will pick up the slack.
Sony, on the other hand, throws a genuinely inhumane amount of money and dev time at projects that, if they fail, are liable to bring down the whole damn dev team with them.
