(One of) the most famous Mario games(released for and played by 90s kids) literally has checkpoints in every stage.

The most famous PoP game played by 90s kids was sands of time with a fucking undo button

They literally do, single player games can be beaten unless you're exclusively playing gacha/live service singleplayer games, or roguelikes, which the popular ones have stories/endings in most cases

I can't speak on Sonic since I've only played BA2 and Heroes but this image and OP are both gay and retarded

There's plenty of modern games that have difficulty far beyond anything on the snes. Even more so for romhacks, no one cares about fucking battle toads or ghosts and goblins, no one cares about contra with 3 lives, those games were hard for their time, they aren't hard by modern standards.

i'm missing the part in the OP image that said PoP was well-known or any assertion like that.
It's a statement of fact that if you played PoP on the NES you were taught to not fuck up lest you be sent back to the very start of the game no different than hitting the actual reset button. And that's all that's being said. And, I *did* play it on the NES, and learn to not fuck up if i wanted to progress.

>>
>>747651003

>>
>>747651142
Platformers are also just rythm games by that metric. If you don't have enemies that dynamically react to what you're doing, it's a rythm game in a sense. Old games didn't have that.
>>
>>747651142
>the enemies able to kill me in 2 hits, like i can to them, isn't fair; it's bullshit
>why the FUCK do I have to wait for an opening to do damage without taking any?

>>
>>747651242
that would only hold if you needed to actually miss every platform to actually traverse the game. read: iframes require that you actually get hit by attacks in order to avoid taking damage.
>>
>>747650870
You can just say you're too stupid to understand the original implications. I'll think less of you but you'll live.
>>
>>747651313
The issue is damage being unavoidable unless you use iframes. but you know this, hence why you had that strawman locked and loaded.
>>
>>747651360
No, it means that you need to be able to perform inputs at the right moment.
Because rythm games don't have iframes either, brreaking the analogy.
>>
>>747651464
and "the right moment" looks like the absolute wrong moment, as you'll take damage no matter how far you are from the enemy model, because you didn't iframe at the right time (read: when you actually get hit)
>>
>>747651439
>damage is unavoidable without using iframes
how is an enemy going to hit me when i've killed it with a bow or magic from a distance? how is an enemy going to hit me if I play agressively and kill it before it has a chance to exit an idle animation?
you can just say you're terrible at the game, pops. Plenty have in the past and nobody has given a shit. It's only when you get all whiny and accusational that we tell you to git fucking gud.

This so called "survey" is boggus, because gen Z itself is super different depending on which one you are talking about.
The oldest gen Z are 30 years old, they were born in 1996. They played with the n64 and GameCube, and might also have played previous consoles as they were cheaper at that time, or maybe their siblings or parents owned them.
The gen Z ends around 2010 or 11, someone born at that time would have a completely different culture.
Early, mid and late gen Z are completely different from each others due to cultures evolving super fast. They don't really share much in common.

Hmm, let's see the most popular indie games right now...

Scarlet Skips - One button, just watch titties flop up and down

Vampire Survivors, Megabonk and other incrementals - Number go up dopamine hit psuedo-gambling

Pizza Tower - You literally can't die. Just overstimulation brainrot that gets a pass because it's cartoony and well-animated

Slay the Spire - Card slop no gameplay just more psuedo-gambling

It is not even the hardest game out. Elden Ring is just the perfect example because it has sold, what, 20-30M copies? It is a household name among any 'hardcore' gamers and is not some kusoge doujin title downloaded by 5 people in North Korea. A mainstream smash hit is way harder than fucking Mario or Sonic (AKA the other super popular mainstream games released back then).

Just some millennially stroking himself. Games today are still hard, the only real factor is that "easier" games sell more to less interested gamers, while gaming-types, which are independent of generation, seek out the fewer, harder games.

Are we really pretending kids today don't play Elden Ring as much as 80-90s kids played games with no savestates?

Kids these days are unable to stay focused on a game. They literally can't stare at a screen for more than 10 seconds. They can't just sit down and play a game for hours and hours. Exploring and figuring things out. Finding secrets is so rewarding and fun, but kids will never know because they play with a guide open. I pity them.

I've wondered if there's some truth to this. Games adding auto play, invincibility, impossible to lose scenarios or skips, etc.

I get it from a marketing perspective you don't want any player to feel like they lost. But this can't be good for personal development to be coddled to such a degree.
>>
>>747657775
You got the timeframe right, but not the cause. It was the PS1. Using CDs instead of cartridges meant virtually unlimited storage. Suddenly, there was no need to reuse everything as many times as possible anymore. You could make a game that just keeps going, telling a long story, showing off many places.
So there's no more need for the difficulty that covered up how short old games were by making you play the same shit over and over and over again.

There is but it's not a generational thing. The attention economy has completely shifted and as a developer you have assume the audience is on their phone if they aren't engaged for more than 5 minutes.
While zoomers and now alphas are the common scapegoat this, happens to millennials and up too. It affects everyone. Even boomers, who used to be stalwart EVERYONE IS ON THOSE DAMN PHONES NO PHONES AT THE DINNER TABLE REMEMBER WHEN DINNER WAS SACRED AND WE TALKED ABOUT OUR DAY are now on their phones at the dinner table.

As a zoomie (older kind)
I always find hilarious how millennials turned out to be really just a pack of privileged faggots that blame everyone else but themselves. They think boomers and genxers own them, so they design shit that's so against what they did that they eventually make it simpler and easier for zoomers and alphas and taking all the credit for that, but seethe astronomically when they see that people born into these simple concepts, are obviously all they know.
YOU made games simpler in your search to stick it to the previous generations. YOU were the ones born into these systems and rewired them out of your own experience.
>>
>>747660334
>If you locked them in a room
No that would be too easy. They can stay at home or wherever they want, but they're given a TV, an NES and a copy of the game and told they have 24 hours from the moment they get the items.
>>
>>747648626
Constant failure didnt train completion as well. It trained dropping games when you bored.

one - zoomers played that shit, too, had DSes and 3DSes
two - battle royale games are BRUTAL like fortnite - it's basically a roguelike with one life
fortnite specifically - baby zoomers NOLIFE building, it's fucking insane

also not shitting on millennials but even though older millennials played these brutal SNES games, a good chunk grew up to be absolute soulless soiboys and kucks and nintddlers
like ones outside america are fine, but american ones are insane, at least half of them - I think it's the retards who were hipsters back then - these faggots know no strife, but normal millennials are normal and pretty based

seriously. we had save games from the fucking 80s. just because consoles had no memory and couldn't save more than 3 times or whatever doesn't mean there were "no saves"
and arcade games had infinite continues
>>
Autosaves are bad game design because they remove agency from the player. Them existing is fine in a vacuum, but manual saves should take priority.
Of course there are exceptions to this and if you design your game with autosaving in mind, for example some kind of roguelike that autosaves after every decision, that is fine.
What I hate is getting penalized for exploring.

Money grubbing publishing companies like Brady entered into dark bargains with game makers who were encouraged to add things that were almost impossible to find organically in order to sell books. The internet ultimately cooked this golden calf but for a period between the late 90's and early 00's the strategy guide was king.

Depends on the game. If its some friendslop thing where you just do a disposable samey mission over and over it doesn't really matter if you 'progress' whatever arbitrary systems they have in place, you can drop it whenever.

Story games though I find this approach strange unless you don't like it enough to drop it, it seems odd to pick up an RPG or a game like Cyberpunk or Witcher and not want to finish it, even if you have to drop the difficulty and play it purely as a visual novel.

This is correct. OP isn't describing 90s kids, it's describing 80s kids. Games like Battletoads, MegaMan and Castlevania are brutal - so much so, I wouldn't even call them fun. They had to constantly fuck you over in order to make sure you didn't beat it in 20 minutes. Meanwhile, going from NES to SNES, games like Turtles in Time, MegaMan X and Super Metroid are ballbustingly difficult, they're totally reasonable and fun.
