Is a large playerbase really that important for a fighting game? You only need 2 people for a match, right?

For a fighting game, nah. But the smaller your playerbase is, the harder it becomes to recommend the game to newcomers, so it's basically death even if it's slow.

Why?

crossplatform
no one plays fighters on PC

It matters for good matchmaking
If there are 200 people playing a game, the person closest to you in skill level could 50x better than you (This person is also dogshit at the game relative to the other 199 players)

No. In fact low playerbases are the most desirable outcome for fighting games.

>Play DOTA, TF2, R6S, CS
>10k active players
>99999 of them are retarded morons who make you lose the match

>Fighting game
>10 players
>They aren't players; they're masters who actually know what are they doing.

I think the biggest problem with the fighting genre now is most fighting games used to be played locally. Playing online is fucking awful because you either have crappy servers or people playing from hundreds of miles away.

This game died even faster than an SNK game and is not even a bad game. Making fighting games are a waste of time, if it's not Street Fighter no one plays it and SF6 fucking suck dick btw. So is not like people play that turd because it's a quality game or anything, is just the brand.

The current state of the FGC makes sense when you consider that 80% of people get their opinions on games and what to play from the 0.2% of people who are trying to make a living off content creation or esports shit

The unfortunate truth is that fighting games are ultimately DPS races with some RPS mechanics thrown in. That's why top players have abandoned all pretense of it being skill based and just build their hands so they can get those obnoxious meaty buffers every match and flip the game.
