>>
>>747658084
Thats very expensive for what it is.
You can get the Q3 and a PC for that much.
You can get a PS5 and a Switch 2 for that much.
They should have just ditched the internal bullshit this garbo has and sold it for half as much as a dedicated headset.

I still like my Pico 4 I got for $400. 4k (not that it means much these days), wireless or wired. Not as heavy. No wall sensors, just headset and controllers. I'm not sure what modern VR has to do to be over $900

Yeah, Valve really said "fuck it" chossing to release it like this. It's pretty disappointing because VR with seamless SteamOS seems like a no-brainer.

So should I just get the pimax dream air now that the frame is a flop?
>>
>>747661984
It’s about the same size/type of lenses. The frame has a better chip by like 30%, and double the ram.
You basically need to buy the third party attachment for full color pass through. I have no idea what they were thinking not including something that’s been standard for years and years now.

I'm sure the Quest 4 will have eye tracking and the same wireless dongle for a few hundred cheaper. I'll just wait. The foveated streaming with eye tracking are the only things that set this apart from a Quest, and Quest will have way better passthrough. There's no way they don't copy this for Q4.

I wish they released a version of the Steam Frame that had minimal hardware and was only for Streaming PCVR. Literally that's all I'm going to use it for. It's so expensive because the hardware it natively uses is like nearly Steam Deck tier. Potentially, yes. They're experimenting with a new codec for wireless streaming called pyrowave, iirc. But if we hear about it, it will be like a year + post launch.

People tried a hackish way to get it to work on Quest, said it looked amazing but drained battery fast.

Steam Frame is for people who do everything but gaming on their VR. If you want to play graphically intensive VR games you will still need a cable, at which point you may as well get the Index as it has better controllers and better fidelity with PCVR.

>>
>>747665383
I thought the point of foveated streaming+rendering was to eliminate that need
>>
>>747665502
Nah there’s a lot of good shit. It’s just not mainstream.
>>
>>747665528
Foveated rendering brings only 10-20% framerate boosts. It’s there to enable streaming without completely shitting the bed in terms of compression. Anyway there are tethered options with eyetracking.
>>
>>747662640
I can understand and respect having a rigid belief like that. But like, there is only one thing seemingly everyone in the VR space has been waiting for and thinking will "save" VR and its the new Valve headset. So refusing to subsidize it imo has kind of killed VR.

Maybe in 10 years it'll have another moment like the Oculus kickstarter but today it has effectively died.

>>
>>747665702
Anyone that thought that Valve was going to "save" VR is deluding themselves. Big commercial VR came and flopped. The subsidized console business model failed. Trying to do it again would be insanity
>>
Is Valve sharing or open sourcing their foveated streaming to other headset manufacturers? If not, I don't see the point in not subsidizing this piece of shit.

The Frame's biggest selling point is the fact that it's standalone and wireless, andd to a lesser extent the foveated rendering/streaming too. Everyone I've spoken to who went to the preview event last year said that those are actual game changers.

You can do it in fairly small space as long as you don't have fragile shit in that space. I play in a small 10 x 8 space in part of my office that I've removed anything I can hurt myself on or destroy. I can't play blade and sorcery though, I end up punching the walls as my office is a weird shaped room. While the steam frame seems like it is an overpriced apple-tier product, and I won't be buying it (have index), steamvr is a very well put together UI for vr gaming. You designate your floor space by drawing it with your hand, and whenever you get within arms reach of walls/edge of play space, a light AR grid comes into focus to warn you you're getting too close.

I don't know what to tell you anon, it's not. If you want an example play the built-in Subnautica VR and then go play SubmersedVR. One is very noticeably more immersive, because the mod designs all of the player's actions specifically around VR.

Retards don’t understand that Q3 is "cheaper" because Facebook sells it at a loss. And you pay the difference with YOUR data, YOUR privacy, and YOUR behavior, which is analyzed and sold to Palantir.

On the other hand, Steam Frame comes pre-installed with GNU+Linux, and it lets you install whatever you want, even Gentoo. It doesn’t collect your data or spy on you. You pay more to avoid being ad cattle and to be a free white man.

I have one. It's a great headset if you mod in eyetracking and foveated rendering on pc. Image is good. Strap needs mods but if you get mods the hanging Design makes it great for sports stuff. But you will readjust it a lot and the controllers die after 2 years because they stop charging.

It's not just the raised prices, it's the fact that the RAM cartel won't deal with you at all if you don't accept their ludicrous prices. A couple years ago, if you bought RAM in bulk for manufacturing, you likely got some kind of discount. Now the discount is instead of paying 3x the price of RAM, it's only 2x.

I really don't care what you believe, thirdie. The steam frame is poorly priced. The irony, is that they won't even sell the frame in your country.
>>
>>747671262
And you need incredibly beefy hardware to do it because most is ue which runs like shit.
I get why people say that isn't enough - if you want a good experience and a frame you pay like 6k atm. They released it too late. Ppl will hate it because they'll realise the need a 1k+ gfx card. And even those struggle.
>>
>>747671262
VR mods aren’t worthwhile. Unless the game has a built in VR mode it’s usually just a sidegrade from a big monitor.
>>
I tried all three Quests and 3 is basically the perfect experience. I don't know how can Frame justify this price.
>>
The foveated rendering and the usb dongle for wireless streaming with no latency are the game changers with this headset.
Quest 2&3 have wireless streaming too, but it's full of jank.
All the reviewers are saying about the frame that it has no lag at all, just as good as if it was on a cable.
And the foveated rendering makes it possible to run games like half life alyx on a smartphone processor.
So foveated rendering with a decent gaming pc will make it much easier to get higher framerates, and in VR, you need high framerates to have a good experience;

But +1K is still a fucking lot.
I'm still getting one.
>>

guys im kinda retarded. what headset are you supposed to get if you're OK with wired? used valve index? there's barely any on ebay with the knuckles + base station 2.0's.
>>
>>747670548
I would say the biggest issue is that it's not a dedicated pcvr headset. The controllers seem nicer if they still have the knuckles style finger tracking, but not being in the exact same format as the knuckles controller with hand straps and everything just seems like a bad design choice. Plus, we don't know how the controllers feel in hand. I honestly don't like the steam controller 2 feel. I've been using my 8bitdo ultimate 2 over the steam controller.

The other thing, is that this package costs double the quest 3 for comparable performance, and the quest 3 comes with 512GB for $600 vs the frame for ~$1050. People say facebook subsidizes, but I'm gonna be honest, I doubt it.
>>
>>747671623
Does it actually apply foveated rendering when streaming from a PC or does it apply only to the video feed between the dongle and PC? True FR requires per game application to my knowledge.

Right now it's only the encoding and we don't know if the streaming runtime pass eye tracking data to PC. It should because otherwise VRC faggots are gonna be extremely mad but there's no concrete proof of it working on video right now, only for native application like their special alyx build.

They have a smaller stock than the existing demand. They will 100% sell out due to scarcity. You could get a really nice hardtail mtb for $1000-1200.
>>
>>747671985
The devs need to implement foveated rendering in to the game for the steamframe SDK to use it.
A lot of devs who make VR games have already implemented it in to their VR games because they have steam frame dev kits.
Apparently valve made it very easy to implement it.
>>
>>747671623
>no latency
lol, no. The streaming framerate is 90 fps. Last I read was they got decompression down to ~10ms.
>>
>>747672127
VRC faggots will hack it in eventually, but no "true" foveated rendering will be poison for other headsets that actually send eyetracking data one way or another.
>>
>>747668446
It is actually worse than that because the Bigscreen Beyond 2 requires multiple Valve base stations for tracking to work. I think they are $200 a pop.

If you're thinking what VR headset to get, whether to splurge on this or get a Quest or a Pico or something: Just wait.

VR just died today. The one hope the VR industry had was that Valve would revitalize it with a new headset, but this is Quest 3 hardware for triple the price.

VR development studios and players are going to be offloading their headsets in the years to come and you'll be able to pick up a Quest 3 at around Quest 2 prices in a year or so. There will be a flood of second hand devices to pick from if you want to play HLA or something else. If you like cheap hardware to tinker with, this will be the best case scenario for you.

index is garbage, bulky and lower resolution... just get a damn quest 3 (and NO you dont need some elaborate facebook account to login, you can just make some random new one on the spot) and then just jailbreak it and it'll still work on PC as well.

Index is a great headset. The only major complaint I have is that the knuckles controllers develop joystick drift if you press on them for stuff like sprinting. >>747662285
Pretty sure they're just making the Frame because they feel like it. This very clearly isn't a product that is going to make them any significant amount of money, at least not compared to the enormous income they get from Steam itself. It's not even like the Deck, which can clearly find a niche for itself, the VR industry is in a terrible state and it's not improving, because its problems are with content and lack of quality output from the VR games "industry."

So this shit isn't going to be making them any major money, I think they're basically making it out of personal interest basically. Then they must not have any real expectations of profit or market share, so I'm going to guess they set the price such that they will for sure not be losing money on it at least.

I have a 3080 ti with a Reverb G2. The G2 is the exact same resolution as the Frame. I’m still on WMR native drivers, because I’m still on W10, which leaves performance on the table, due to Microsoft being bad at coding and the translation layer. So, having said that, I find my setup to be the bare minimum needed. I can’t run the crazy Skyrim modlists like Mad God’s Overhaul. Lists like Tahrovin perform quite well.

It needs some SoC to process the camera feeds for tracking and to decode the video stream anyway. It needs the battery anyway. It needs the radios anyway. Might as well give it the capability for some independent function, it's basically just extra software and giving it up wouldn't really allow you to remove major hardware components or anything.

They probably could've skimped out on a cheaper SoC and less RAM, but I'm going to guess that the specs on this thing were set in stone before the current RAM crysis so at the time being more generous probably looked like a minor price increase only.

I sort of am too. I know it’s not one-to-one, but I’ve seen benchmarkers on Youtube use this exact Snapdragon in phones to show off frames while playing mobile games and emulation. The chip does emulation really well.

Probably because there is barely any difference and you would have to go back and forth between the headsets to notice anything

Dunno why people hate tethered... I mean carrying and hotswapping powerbanks doesn't sound that much better than just glueing a pulley to the ceiling. Maybe if you have you own basketball court but you won't have good stream coverage in that either....

You could say that, but I'd also think that if they didn't plan on developing something like this in the first place, why hire VR engineers?

I think this is kind of where the industry is heading. Wireless, built-in tracking with no beacons, eye tracking. These just seem like logical next steps, the tracking part mostly because people don't really seem to have an appetite for VR beacons. I personally never understood that since I set them up once and basically never touched them since, but hey. I've seen an extreme number of complaints.

>>747674618
They are allright, good tracking, doesn't lose tracking behind your back. But they have problems with other lightsources and reflective surfaces. 70% of all lighthouse problems were fixed by covering the window.
But nobody makes shit for them anymore and you have to get 3rd party dongles for the controllers because they were built into the hmds (vive/index)
>>
>>747673497
Smartest anon in the thread. I don't think VR will die since it seems to mostly be used a mod-content-oriented gaming community. Valve most definitely fucked up if they aren't going to support the index with new hardware and don't have a dedicated PCVR index replacement in the works. They would probably fuck up the price-point though, so maybe it is over.
>>
>>747674642
>>
>>747674305
That's more than good enough for all but the shittiest of VR mods.
You need a good CPU too. Way too many games have terrible CPU performance now and loading a poorly made VR mod on top shoots those requirements up into the high end.

Valve pushed an alyx build for the frame with eyetracked foveated rendering. Kinda disappointed with the power draw but I'm sure it must look good in headset.

You are ideal with a 5070 ti. The money you saved by not getting a 5080/5090 should buy you the headset.
>>
>>747674618
>why hire VR engineers?
Because you need them if you want to release any VR headset. Index is too old, so I assume most people who had experience from back then are gone or forgot.

>I think this is kind of where the industry is heading
It's not. Meta is skewing the market by pricing Quest below the manufacturing price. If you look around, every option exists except few. One is reliable inside-out tracking wired headset and wireless headset without compression. Standalone/Quest is dead end, causals cared only about novelty and it ran out already, technology limits of WIFI mean the quality improvements has stopped, too. Valve had so much options and they choose the worst for no reason but to imitate.
>>
>>747675113
>LTT and even GN botched their tests somehow
Or whoever got that 3 hour number used a lighter load. GN did have some issue with the battery charging slowly so it's possible there are some headsets with a shitty battery or something
>>
>>747674550
I guess you are just inferior at virtual perception then if you can't handle it on index. I played this years ago and it was great. I didn't experience any of the things you mentioned.
>>
>>747674305
>>747675325
I have a 5070 ti for PCVR with my Quest 3. I do wish I had more vram at times, but that means going to a $4000 5090, so no.

I guess technically you don't need such a graphics card if eye tracking works with all the games you play. I thought the dev had to do that though, not Valve.

ryzen 5600 or something in that range good enough?

>>
>>747675513
I'm not even sure if the extra GPU power would even be percievable in VR, but then again, I'm still on index. I do want a second standalone 32GB VRAM card to power AI for Skyrim VR though. Maybe it'll be doable in 10 years if we are all still alive after the economic crash following the AI bubble. Keep an eye on nvidia and coreweave.
>>
>>747675358
>technology limits of WIFI mean the quality improvements has stopped, too. Valve had so much options and they choose the worst for no reason but to imitate.
The valve headset has much lower input delay compared to the quest 3, clearly they improved on the wireless experience
>>
>>747675002
That's how it is. VR does not have sufficient content to attract an audience that is interested in playing cool video games rather than being interested in VR itself. It isn't worth it if you're looking at it sort of like a new game platform to enjoy, there aren't enough good games to be worth buying the hardware.

There is enough content for VR super enthusiasts to keep themselves busy, but there aren't any "killer apps" to actually draw people in. There was Alyx, and a lot of people were screaming about how upset they were they couldn't play Alyx without a headset, but that's basically it, there hasn't been anything since and it doesn't look like there's anything on the horizon either.

>>747675358
>Meta is skewing the market
Yes but that is what people are buying and expecting now. Everything else is basically tiny, boutique companies for enthusiasts who are really particular about one thing or another, but they're not dictating any direction in the industry because they are too small and not enough people buy their products. That's how it is.
>>
>>747675912
trough-the-lens shots are notoriosly hard to do properly and even then are really hard to interpret both as a reviewer and especially as a viewer

Gooning in VRChat
Finally through Linux
>>
>>747675932
You only shave the very few ms it spends on the wi-fi side since you still need to encode and decode over the cable (it's ethernet over usb), so for most cases it's not really that worth it
>>
>>747676154
Finally, all the groomers use linux so it makes sense
>>
I'd have been more for the idea of a Steam Frame if it had a real USB-C port on it capable of video-out, so you could just use it as a PC w/ a monitor & KBM on the side when not caring for strapping it to your face.
>>
>>747675631
I have a 5070ti and 5600x, the CPU is a performance bottleneck for a lot of VR mods. Even when it runs well enough to play there can be frustrating stutters where CPU frametimes spike.
>>
>>747675631
5600 is mostly fine, but you'll get these fringe cases where the CPU gets hit hard. For example Blade and Sorcery can spike down to like 40 fps during melee which is really annoying. Skyrim is also heavily CPU/RAM dependent around areas like Whiterun. Lets not even talk about Microsoft Flight Simulator.
>>
>the quest 3 is cheaper
Yeah but thats only because you pay extra through selling your privacy to the Zuck
If you are okay with him listening to everything you do and seeing everything you see - fine.
But if you want privacy you gonna pay extra
>>
>>747675932
Probably very similar since it still needs to go through the whole capture + encode + transmit + decode process anyway. It doesn't have an actual video input so you are not removing any major step in the process by using a cable instead of a dedicated wireless link, likely within line of sight in the same room.

You are only going to save a tiny amount of latency in the transmit process.

Wait till you see it actually working. It's interesting that they managed such a low latency, but in the end, they are still stuck at 90fps at Q3 resolution. That's the limit.

>Yes but that is what people are buying and expecting now.
That market doesn't really exists. People bought Quest because it was cheap and VR looked interesting. It was success because it was ultimate disposable toy for casuals. Valve can't match that and customers they decided to target are not really waiting to buy anything but a next Quest.
>>
>>747676360
Skyrim VR depends heavily on what mods you use. Back in the CV1 days I was playing modded Skyrim VR on an overclocked i5 2500k, mostly stable 90fps.
If you hold back on some of the mods and avoid bloatpacks like Mad God there's no reason why a 5600 won't run it.
>>

You don't have to. After I upgraded to a 5080 I was still running a 12400f 16gb CPU RAM combo that surprisingly held up fine in most games. I only upgraded because I thought prices were going to get worse and I wanted to try playing some sim games.

I can confirm when I got my first headset (Pico 4) around 3 years ago. I got the FUS modlist and it ran like a charm at 90fps at 3000x3000 render res per eyes on my 4080.
They've bloated the modlist a little bit since (author got a 5090) then but they have a LITE version with no graphics mods so you can add your 8k toe texture later on if you want.
