paying 1000 for a system that people stopped making games for a couple years ago just seems a bit high. maybe if valve had the decency to put out a press release with this saying they've got some new VR games in development people would be jumping for the chance

>>
>>747664551
They announced HLA with the index and the fact that they didn't announce shit with the frame should really tell you that it's fucking dead on arrival
>>
>>747664558
It's an oculus exclusive, and that's basically a PC game, you need to tinker a little with a program called Revive to launch it but that's it. Meta Quest exclusives like Bamham need to actually be ported by someone though, there's no emulator currently. Most of them were ported by pirates to Pico though so it can't be that hard
>>
>>747664114
Nothing. Recently there have been tons of VR mods for 2d games being made with AI, so there's only really that.
The Frame's controllers are perfect for that since they are basically 1:1 with a normal controller in terms of buttons. That's all the frame has going for it. Wish I could use those controllers with a different HMD.

Nintendo has enough status and money to be able to get contracts to buy memory in mass, even at higher prices than normal. Valve doesn't. Valve has one single deal with a company who ships them memory every so often with a bill attached, and if they don't pay the bill, they simply don't get any memory anymore ever.

Seriously, are you a retard or what?

Fuck off. I never said that shit, so don't come at me with that weak nonsense. Even the most generous estimates out there don't put Valve as being nearly as worth as MS, Sony or Nintendo, and they're new to hardware manufacturing. Of course a relatively smaller company will not be able to arrange the same kinds of contracts or buy as much memory in bulk as the top dogs.

>>
>>747666669
Yes, which is why I was originally responding to the poster who said it’s great to not be poor. If money is a non-issue, then although Frame has very good specs, it’s not enthusiast class, and the only reason to stay away from enthusiast HMDs is because of the price for both the headset and the gpu to run them. I was curious why he would go with the Frame at all.

For sure. The issue people ignore with oled for vr is that you need a significantly higher pixel count to achieve the same level of clarity that a 2160x2160 lcd can achieve. So the panels are more expensive, produce less light, and you need a lot more video card to drive it. Unless you’re someone who has a 4090/5090, people shouldn’t have wanted oled panels in the Frame.

>>747666034
You can purchase one if you need it, but they say that your Steam Deck charger can work, or any other 45w USB-C charger so you don't absolutely need one if you already have something that works. I won't need one as I have a Steam Deck charger I am not using because the Dock is doing that for me, so that's an easy option

>ergonomic accessories
These are Index style hand and head straps . These aren't necessary, but some people like, some hate, and some will buy 3rd party alternatives. Thats probably why they were left out. Go look at the hand straps -these aren't just Joycon dangly connectors to keep it on your wrist, these are Index style straps which I personally like so you can open your hand all the way and have good hand tracking, but apparently Meta fags screeched about how it was bad and not necessary etc.. so its optional. Same with the head strap. Can't really be that upset about them selling the optional shit a la carte when many people will buy it separately, not at all, or an alternative

No, doesn't need an expensive flagship snapdragon to do foveated rendering.

If Frame dropped the ambition of being a standalone headset (dropping the ram, the SSD, and using much cheaper processor), it could have lowered the price to around $600 and have been much smaller and lighter due to not needing complex thermals or even as beefy a battery.

Did you genuinely expect it to be cheaper than this? Valve seems to sell their hardware at a pretty modest profit because they're interested in platform-building but choose not to use vendor lock-in (and worse, like data gathering) as a business model which means they can't compete pound-for-pound with Sony and Meta.
"Good deal" might be impossible to say about any hardware these days but you're not getting scammed.

>>747672869
You sure? I don't see anything in the Connectivity part of the Steam Frame's Steam page that says you can do any data transfer over the USB-C. and DESU, that USB-C port in the back of the frame seems like it would easily break or come unplugged during VR play.

This is bullshit. You can't "force feed" your devices more than they can take to "kill it". At worst you're aging the battery slightly faster by maxing out the charging 0-100 which heats up the battery unnecessarily.

Not really. Having them split ruins it.
>>
>>747665513
New isn't meaningless when the platform is starving for games. If any other platform released 1 or 2 worthwhile games every handful of years they'd be dead in the water just like VR currently is. Unless Valve has new standalone VR/PCVR games in development then releasing a slightly better quest 3 for a jacked up price doesn't make any sense.
>>
>>747674687
>all non-shit wallwarts negotiate power so shit like this doesn't happen
As does the device itself so it's not even enough to have a ultra shit walladapter to fry anything. They both basically need to be damaged or lead a copper wire with 240 volts directly into the device.
>>
>>747674047
The steam deck indicates incorrect wattage the moment you plug it. You would have to be a legitimate retard to not immediately notice something is wrong at 45w. I question your sources

The Gamers Nexus review of the Frame (that just went up) said it's 100% wireless only for data, but they also said there's going to be some kind of accessory kit that adds other shit (like replacing the speakers with whatever the Index uses) coming in a few months as a standalone purchase (not a different SKU). Maybe that version will have wired connectivity?

I mostly agree but you're truly robbing yourself of some great experiences of you don't play the Resident Evils, Gran Turismo 7, and Hitman. GT7 and RE7/8 were designed with VR modes in mind so imo they count as full fledged VR games, but RE4 and especially Hitman translate very well. Hitman is basicly the only reason I dust off the headset anymore.

I think the issue for those is kinda the same as regular oled, you won't get a great resolution, and the VERY high intensity needed for pancakes mean your duty cycle gets very high, so you get horrible persistence smear and can't run at decent refresh rates
to this day psvr2 is the smeariest vr headset ever even at minimum brightness

I get why people want oled but it's just really not made for it YET (there's good stuff on the horizon but again it's 2030+)
>>
>>747659085
I just want the controllers, let me use them as 3D manipulation thingies on my normal monitor
>>
>>747673290
Because of subpixel arrangement. It gets into tech babble quickly, so I’ll keep the explanation broad. LCD has more color emitters and there is less space between them, because many oled panels have a diamond pattern rather than a stripe. That leads to shared colors and a degradation of edge sharpness, which is perceived as more of a screen door to your brain. Newer micro oleds no longer have that issue. They are also extremely expensive and even more so to get those that emit enough light to work in a pancake lense arrangement. Those panels are cutting edge and they are still not as bright as lcd.

Why the fuck don't be companies start making these headsets lightweight and connected to a puck with all the hardware inside? That solves almost every big complaint about VR. You can put a user swappable larger battery and cooling in it, you can use a more powerful system on a chip or offer more options, and you can just upgrade the puck later on and keep your headset. And if you want to use it wired, you could plug the headset directly into your PC and skip the puck. Most people end up using a retarded looking clip on external battery setup anyway to get more than a fucking hour out of it.
>>
>>747677010
The only thing it's "best" at is PCVR streaming. It's marginally more powerful for standalone gaming, but the battery life kills that use case. There are many headsets with better visuals, and better fov. Previous gen had better controller tracking.
>>
>>747677404

>These aren't necessary, but some people like, some hate, and some will buy 3rd party alternatives.

Some people are retarded

Knuckle straps should be in the box just so VR devs know you have them and don't have design the game for people who must hold onto their controllers with their pinky, which is a horrible way to play and some people play VR without the straps not knowing how natural grasping and throwing can be and how fucking nice it is to relax your open hands instead of metaphorically holding a water bottle at an amusement park for 2 hours.
>>
>>747677682
That's what I meant, for standalone stuff like the Quest and this. Make it swappable, keep the headset light, use larger batteries in the puck (I keep calling it that, don't know what else to call it). If you want to use it on your desktop you still could, either streaming for wireless or by connecting to your PC from the port the puck would normally connect. I just think a modular system works best for something like VR.

That would be functional for the tech-savvy, but let's be real, normies would hate that. They would consider the aesthetics of that terrible, they love holistic devices and hate modular ones, hence why they love Apple products so much.

Also the Steam frame is kind of modular, you can pretty much detach everything from the compute unit, so it would be feasible to vuild a a different compute unit made for its housing. I don't know why you would want to do that though. The kind of thing your envisioning wouldn't really make sense until at least 8k resolution per eye at the very least. There are still things being solved before advances in optics and compute are happening at different enough rates. And with the rate that AI is sucking up all compute, optics might actually advance faster.

Valve makes more ever picosecond from its 30% store fee than it would in a millennia of selling velcro straps to the tiny group of VR enthusiasts who play it. Stop mouthbreathing for one day in your life.
>>
>>747680192
That should only raise the price a couple hundred dollars. These prices are for Steam fanboys just like Apple fanboys. Gabe needs more money to make more yachts.
>>
>>747680398
check out how much it cost to make a mid tier pc these days
its easily 2k+
>>
>>747680192
You can build an equivalent steam machine for the same price (form factor and everything). Since Valve is buying in bulk they should be able to get it cheaper than retail. So I have no doubt they are making a profit off of this too.

>>
>>747680490
It's not a mid-tier PC, it's a mobile phone with a chip that costs $160. Bulk buyers also get preferential prices so the margins are even higher than you think.
>>
>>747680495
valve isnt buying large enough quantities, they pay whatever the ram manufacturers say they pay The end. If they dont no one cares.

You've seen retail prices lag the actual prices hardware companies would have to pay for future shipments.
>>
>>747680662
They are definitely not paying the same price you are at microcentre.

Turning is the biggest motion issue in VR. The range of motion of an analog stick doesn't really match your actual head at all. The easiest fix is snap turning to increments of 45 degrees with some nearly imperceptible black frames to simulate a blink. Pretty much everyone can handle that just fine, so this is a commonly available setting. And even if you can handle full analog turning, the speed may feel bad so being able to set the speed is usually common as well.

The second issue is which direction are you expecting forward, strafe left, strafe right, and backwards to be? From the direction your head is facing or the direction your body/hand is facing? It's different for different people, and even different in different games, so having that as a setting is common. It's usually best to be able to define the speed of movement, as well, but for some gameplay that isn't really possible, and it's easier to get used to unnatural speeds in body movement than unnatural speeds in head movement.

Finally for the super-sensitive people, you can vignette what they see while they move, and they will be fine.

No, actually, fuck you. It's 70€ for literally no reason. The frame price is the same in usd/eur but the straps are 10€ more expensive for (((((((reasons)))))))
It's $20 max, fuck you nigger. If I do win the raffle, I will just buy 3rd party ones. This is straight up what you'd expect to see apple doing. You're almost as domesticated as applefags and nintenfags. Almost.

Now buy VR games in place so we can get more of them in the future, I am pirating them all
>>
>>747681095
Each strap was baptized by Gaben himself. Fanboys are lining up to buy them.
>>
>>747681085
Thanks for your effort post. This sounds super complicated to get right for VR game devs when every person reacts so differently. I never really thought about this.

I want a pure streaming experience without cable shit. Every single reviewer claims that the wireless experience is top notch.
But honestly, I might as well just wait. Some other company will just do a better fucking job at a less faggot pricetag
>>
How did we go from Valve subsidizing the steam deck at $299 to them going maximum jew selling steam machines (consoles) without controllers and charging $90 for frame straps? Surely they are making more money than ever from the steam store and the money isn't going into gaben's yacht?

I don't think they are growing anymore. Old games on sale still sell well, but new games whether AAA or indie are in a crisis. They may be selling more new games in quantity, but those new games aren't making as much money.
>>
>>747680070

You have no idea how manufacturing works and think valve is driving to microcentre buying up all the RAM as they make steam machines one by one.

That's to demonstrate it's battery life on low loads. Streaming the same game is probably more demanding because of the added compute of video de/compression.

nigger wtf, its literally a pair of goggles with a screen slapped on with dildo controllers.
