Bloom was the first anti-soul feature. But at least you could disable it, and in some cases it gave the games a cool atmosphere.

It's interesting going back and playing gen6 games when bloom became a more commonly used feature, in lots of games it's used as a way to augment the vertex or baked lighting by giving it more depth and interesting highlights, great artists really did make good use of it. Once it became popular on Western PC games it was just vomit the scene with aggressive glows and pay no mind to how it works, just blast the screen. Some did a fine job with it, mostly console games, but wow did those PC games drape it.

"bloom was the first anti soul feature" what is this contrarian speak
Bloom was cool as fuck

it's like modern volumetric fog
can be used tastefully to give a slight sense of distant fog
but most devs put it everywhere and make it start almost directly in front of the player
the techniques themselves aren't bad, they're just overwhelmingly used badly

Bloom was cool because classic shading looked dull. Gen7 by default looked like ps2 games: killzone, black, so blood and color grading gave it next gen look
