It was very good in its original format but failed to become better mechanically. For example they never bothered to add a simple teleport option after you clear the level that would cut down on mind numbing backtracking. Itemization favored 2-3 combos that were basically auto clears and very easy to get (guppy and that giant laser plus some others, basically you got one of those two ever 3-4 runs). I quit playing ages ago but the game had some unrealized potential. Tried Mewgenics recently, again, mind numbingly tedious shit.
