people keep saying "new games look better" yet shit like this happens
>>
3 polygons vs 1000000 polygons
>>
>>747669003
Give the devs a break, mirrors in india are all like that
>>
>every mirror has the exact same smudge patterns
this is seriously lazy work
>>
>>747669151
Computational power stayed the same?
>>
So are they afraid that if they make the mirror lower resolution and less detailed that they will be made fun of for it.
>>
i still don't understand what is such a problem with doing mirrors the old fashioned way
like the game is obviously capable of drawing more than one character on the screen at a time, right? so just draw the player character reflected in the mirror. draw the room reflected in the mirror. what the fuck is the problem
>>
I haven't seen a working mirror since...what, The Sims 4?
I've been playing Doom3 for the first time and there's a jumpscare in the mirror where you look like a demon and that shit got me good because I just didn't expect a mirror.
>>
>>747670063
>i still don't understand what is such a problem with doing mirrors the old fashioned way
It require an actual dev to set it up for each room you place a mirror.
Meanwhile smudgy mirrors are simple enough to set up that your artfag team can place them all by themselves everywhere they want.
>>
>>747669151
rendering 1 more character in front of the player will nuke performance?
>>
>>747670742
is this seriously a compromise that needs to be made when a game costs trillions of dollars to make? they should be able to put a mirror in every scene.
>>
>>747671015
>when a game costs trillions of dollars to make?
Those trillions don't go to paying the people actually making the game. Nearly all of it goes to management, marketing, renting a football stadium-sized office in California, CEO & shareholders, etc.
Code monkeys have also been moved to the lowest caste in the production chain, so having to be dependent on one is seen as intolerable by artfags. This is the reason Unreal 5 catered so much to the "you don't need a code monkey for all of this, we made it retard-proof so that even your artfags can do coding with it" trend.

Polygons literally don't matter this day and age, AND the BUILD engine games do not use polygons.
Also, that BUILD engine title required top of the line consumer PC to run smoothly. You had a fucking slideshow in your hands if you tried playing Douk on the average 486.

And once again, I gotta bring out the simple hard fact about reflections:
If you can render a regular scene in high-fidelity, you CAN indeed have a Planar Reflection mirror casting another view of the same quality scene.
We've had this tech since the DirectX8 times, ffs!
>>
>>747670742
>It require an actual dev to set it up for each room you place a mirror.
Mirrors are a literal drag and drop feature. Have been since UE3. And planar reflections are WAY cheaper and faster than Gay Tracing alternatives, while also being way more accurate and perspective-corrected than SSR.
You can also optimize Planar Reflections in all the same ways you would optimize your main game camera. Heck, you could even throw DLSS / FSR and framegen on them this day and age!
>>
>>747671817
but then it's a fake mirror :(
>>

My answer was about "doing mirrors the old fashioned way".
>>
>>747670860
no, but rendering the whole room twice will
>>
>>747669889
Yes.

People feel that only RTX mirror reflections are valid and that rendering the scene at a lower resolution using tricks is "primitive" according to Digital Foundry.

>>
>>747672117
The "old fashioned way" you're referring has not been used for over 30 years, for a reason: it was obsolete already come ~2002.

Also, fun fact: not even Duke 3D does the "copy of a room" shit you're referring. It actually does real-time cloning of the entire space AUTOMATICALLY, essentially creating a working projection without any manual labor needed.

>>747672134
>>747672437
Like we've said a million times the past 2 decades: that's not how it works.
Also, if drawing TWO (2) ROOMS is tanking your game's performance, you by the very definition have a shitty engine, and/or another pile of massive issues in your hands.

Every single window and door is a "portal" in modern 3D games. The average post-DX9 era game should be able to show DOZENS of rooms and DOZENS of fully 3D characters with a full PBR texture workflow on them, with deferred or Foward+ rendering shading, and not even break a sweat.

>Same reason rifle scopes usually don't have a "picture in picture" view

>>

>Anon what the fuck are you talking about
Look it up. I know what I'm talking about.
You don't just "cut a hole" in a wall and call it a day in game code.

Every single opening is literally using the same tech as Portal's portals.
Which are just another example of effortlessly working secondary projections, that you could even stack on top of each other back in 2007.

>>747673132
They literally could, and did for many years.
But you really haven't needed to do that in ages.

>>747673250
He's a typical underage zoomie tech illiterate / Nvidia shill in disguise, parroting 2 decades old may mays he does not understand. Literally no better than "OMG your computer gaems gave the PC a virus!!" parents.

Multiple game cameras have not been an issue in vidya for decades, and everything an actual mirror covers, culls stuff from the main camera to render.

We could already do 100 square mile maps with destructible elements and 2000 polygonal enemies and projectiles back in 2010 with games like Serious Sam 3, on a GTX 560ti 1GB and 2-core Intel i3. Modern day UE5 toddlers are just lazy hacks.

>>
>>747673123
not him but a ton of games use occlusion/distance culling to get fps boosts. instead of having rooms right next to each other, the rooms will be miles apart and the doorway connecting each room is a flat plane portal with a shader thats a video feed of the next room. walking into the portal teleports you to the next room

ive made vrchat worlds that do this for optimizations sake lol

This is pretty much how the 3D worlds have worked since the 1990s.

Pic rel is a ps3 game
The mirror reflects the entire room, while the floor faintly reflects what is above it and the strong light sources, much like a waxed wooden floor.
New games cannot do that unless they use fake images, fake resolution, fake lighting, and fake graphics.
>>
>>747679282
>Okay so why do devs go "but the performance impact!" when it comes to planar reflections even though ray tracing hits way harder?
They don't.
Only the schizos on the forums, chat rooms, discussion boards and comment sections do ... because they are nowadays plagued by corpo-homo shills (yes, really) and ignorant underage trolls who parrot ages old memes without understanding any of the terminology.

Modern day "devs" don't even talk about it!
They just keep slapping SSR on everything, or even forcing RT as a requirement to start a game at worst these days.

And in case an actual dev comes out and comments on the subject matter, the criticism comes usually AFTER they've wasted shittons of resources on pointless shit like fully modeled pubic hair with 4K PBR texture sets, or whatnot.
Which then results their games looking AND running like shit... which leads to streamlining and shortcuts, like changing transparency and lighting effects from smooth 8-bit gradients, into dithered 1-bit noise fests, just to gain a few extra frames. But then they coat that shit with Temporal AA, which makes the game look smudgy and blurry as fuck + ruins the performance further...
...So they succumb to using Upscalers (DLSS / FSR / XeSS...) to improve the performance! But now all the noise and ghosting are extra bad, and distant / fine details are practically eliminated...

In the rare, and I mean RARE case when a dev that knows his shit steps up and opens his mouth, the #1 criticism towards Planar Reflections is the fact that you pretty much have to use them on a flat surface. There's many "Uhm, Axhully...!" exceptions to this as well, but that's what the Nvidia shills are using as a leverage when shilling their terribly implemented RT slop.
CryTek actually had a very performant, crisper, less ghosting and 100% open-platform ray tracing solution that they demonstrated already few years ago, but the company going down and investors burying their creations kinda killed it.
