Mainly have played cave/touhou, how are these? or talk about any other shmups. This is not an eceleb or futa thread
Gradius is fine. As a shmup on the NES there are a few better options, but the best version of Gradius I is decent. Some say V was the peak, but I think it was Gaiden. This isn't the most popular opinion, but there's patches to reduce or outright remove the slowdown of the SNES version of III, and I think it becomes one of the best with that.
>>747683769>Mainly have played cave/touhou, how are theseReally bad. A lot of them is doing absolutely nothing. People who praise them typically latch onto some minor aesthetic quality and spent very little time on them.
>>747683769Play arcade originals if there are any available. There are Parodius games that are console exclusive, and 4 isn't currently emulatable. 5 is trash made by Treasure, so avoid it.My tops are Salamander/Life Force and Gradius 3. I love every Parodius, but mainly for the art/music, since the gameplay is mediocre at best.
>>747685268I thought the Salamander games were pretty stupid. The routing isn't very demanding and they are the sort of thing you can just beat your head against until you just passively flop through them brainlessly. Gradius 3 is similiarly obnoxious where 95% of the game is just waiting for the handful of really precise parts, which aren't even the elaborate fun kind of execution, just obnoxious.
Thoughts on this game?
>>747683769Crisis Force is the shit. Best shmup ost on nes.https://youtu.be/dWye7hTVahI?si=rrdWRDcwjIpigDLR
>>747684726Tell me more about how you feel about playing the first Gradius game
>>747688351There's not much to say about it. Scoring is surviving the loops for those who want to do that. Grab a shield, use Double for stages, Laser for bosses most of the time. Death is bad. Gaiden while being more of the same, is at least a very polished version of this idea, and death is a little less bad. II is a big improvement over I but I would rather just play Gaiden. NES version of I is easier in many ways like the front shield actually protecting your whole ship and if you kill enough moai you can skip an entire stage. Funny. Easy clear, fine time.
>>747683769>This is not an eceleb or futa threadAnd that is why you fail. ~ Yoda
>>747688965>Laser for bossesMore like all the time. That shit has a huge hitbox so abuse that, especially at the final stage. Double is only good for the moai stage.I do like the ability to change your loadout in Gaiden. Wish they stick to it after Gaiden
>>747689245I've been trying to clear Gaiden. It's apparently easy but it's my first time really working with a game of its length and there's many moments where you can get fucked over if you aren't paying attention, like the lasers in the moai stage that remain active even as a moai falls down. The customization is definitely great and helps recovery too. III was cool too because of each power having a selection to choose from.
>>747685550I was pretty disappointed by Salamander 3 being mostly a rehash of the first game. Couldn't they have done something more original?
Speaking of M2, there really should be a Senjin Aleste port. I can emulate it fine, but not everyone is going to want to, and it doesn't work on Linux without fixes that are beyond me. If there is a port planned, it will probably be announced this year.
>>747691038If they were given a bit more development time, Gradius IV would have been in the collection. Or better yet, they should have ported Gradius rebirth. But to speak about Salamander III, it is way too easy and I cleared it first try despite being relevantly new to the series lmao
>>747687487Much more fun than the other game it came packed with on the 360. (Pink Sweets fucking sucks in comparison to the original Ibara)
>>747692174I kind of sucked at shmups when I played Salamander III and I could still clear it after a couple of hours. I think it wants you to loop it, but I'm not a fan of doing that, especially when the game doesn't have the practice modes that the other games in the collection do. It's not emulation but they could've done something.
>>747692705Ibara is a game I don't have a lot of experience with, and even then I have primarily played Kuro, but I respect both versions for being unique. Watching the rank go down when I use a bomb is funny, patterns get so much easier that way. Flawed emulation and no good port = relative obscurity I guess. Pink Sweets is just not good, at least the arcade version isn't. The added modes are a little bit better.
>>747694519>Pink Sweets is just not good, at least the arcade version isn't.The 360 port was even worse since they removed the intentional slowdown, which made the last two stages unplayable.
Gradius Gaiden and 5 are the only ones worth playing today.
>>747694936I really hope the new release fixes that, but the Steam page says the game will only work with a controller (I don't know how true that will end up being) so I don't have too much confidence.
