Every week a 10/10 game released. I didn't even have to sell the idea of getting a PS2 to my mom because my dad had already done it.

Super versatile console too. My dad played Tony Hawk and Tiger Woods. My mom played Final Fantasy and Katamari. I played everything.

It was the peak of "Nintendo is for kids" era and Nintendo decided released a purple gay lunchbox with no DVD player, no GTA and a kiddie Zelda. This was absolutely devestating when most millennials were now teenagers who wanted GRITTY and MATURE games. Nintendo tried to damage control with some Resident Evil exclusivity but at that point the damage was already done.

Xbox lasted less than 5 years before being discontinued due to MS and Nvidia falling out. Gamecube barely got games in the first place. Dreamcast died before the PS2 even came out.
Meanwhile the PS2 was on the market until the PS4 launched, and was still receiving brand new high profile releases a few years into the next gen.
PS1 also outsold every other console of that generation during their lifetimes as well, supported by its absurdly strong backcatalogue and extraordinarily cheap prices. PS2 being backwards compatible also meant reprints of games kept being made for popular titles. You could still buy some brand new PS1 games like Chrono Cross up until 2012.

One aspect is that it was a dvd played. Another was that making games for it was way easier than for nintendo consoles (same with the ps1) so it had a really big library of games at lower prices. The cred that PS1 built up also carried it a long way

Nintendo home consoles were on a downward slope since the NES. They treated third parties like shit, and infamously stuck with cartridges for N64. By the Gamecube, Nintendo was seen as childish compared to the "mature" offerings of xbox/PS2. The wii was an aberration. Luckily for them, their handhelds always did well. The Switch feels inevitable, in retrospect.
>>
Reminder that the "it played DVDs!" is just a cope from Nintendo fans who don't want to accept that it was actually just a good console with good games.
Oh, and it was the new version of another good console that had good games (that could be played on the new good console with good games).

So you have the 5th generation. Sony enter the market and they decide to go the CD route rather than carts like Nintendo was doing. Carts were more expensive because they were basically a chip. Nintendo, being retarded and arrogant, decided to stick with them for anti-piracy. But Playstation's games were way cheaper than the N64 and could hold more data. Also, by being a larger company, Sony has economies of scale which allowed them to cuck the Saturn in terms of price. The end result was Sony dominated the generation and everyone focused their efforts on that system as in part due to the fact it wasn't a nightmare to develop on like the 64 and Saturn were. But the Playstation also benefited from a boom in video games as the young consumer base became teenagers. To put it into perspective, lifetime the PS1 outsold the SNES and Genesis combined. Fast forward to the PS2 and all the sequels to these successful games were going to be on Playstation and not the Gamecube or XBox. Again, there was no reason to bother with those consoles and those publishers were right.

Because Sony dominate in the 5th generation, they basically established themselves as the defacto console. The only time they lost in the traditional console space was the 7th Generation but that was due to
>The 360 and Wii being WAY cheaper
>The 360 also getting GTA4 and a lot of other big hits (Halo 3 and Gears)
>PS3 was a nightmare to develop for
>The 360 really only did well in the US and England and the Wii was a completely different consumer base all together
The end result has been that XBox is irrelevant and only survives off daddy Microsoft while Nintendo retreated to the handheld space. But winning Gen 5 means Sony basically won forever and its also why they can afford all these retarded decisions they are making recently

It was literally a big part of how so many PS2's got into households and that install base was key. Nintendo no doubt realised exactly what Sony had done and then copied it for the Wii.

They didn't target gamers or enthusiasts, they targeted entire families and it worked insanely well.

The only option is to wait until an e-celeb makes a video on it and then people get their firmware update.

Yeah. No one bought it for games. Makes me wonder if there were any games for it at all.

No one would pay (with inflation) $200 extra for a games console unless they wanted the games.
>>
>>747877031
>PS2 was the de facto dvd player in south america and are probably still used in most favelas today

Yeah. I mean, if you went into a store to buy a DVD player would you buy the $200 DVD player or the $300 DVD player that plays games (you don't pay games)? Obviously you spend extra on the feature you don't use.

>i grew up in the midwest and during that time boomers were all about the "home entertainment center" craze so every kid's house had a real dvd player with surround shit and shit, but the ps2 was always in the basement or kid's room
Bit different down here in Aus as the PS2 was pretty much the exact same price as a dedicated DVD player (early DVD players were even more expensive than the PS2) so it wasn't uncommon for a household to have multiple PS2's, and the grandparents almost always had one as well.

It's still the best source of unmolested and near new PS2's today if you can find someone in their 70's/80's who bought one for a dvd player or for when the grandkids came over.
>>
I still find these sales numbers strange. Like virtually everybody in "the gaming space" talked about Halo and Ninja Gaiden on Xbox and Smash Bros Melee and Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube and you mean to tell me both sold that bad?

This plus massive amounts of piracy and that's about it.
Also note that the DVD bit meant it could be gotten as a DVD player.
>>
How far down the list is "games" and "new version of popular product" in terms of reasons people bought PS2 and how big is the gap between DVDs and games?

Is it 50% DVD 50% game? 75% DVD 25% game?
>>
>>747878503
The highest selling PS2 game sold 17million, and 160million PS2s were sold.
The highest selling GC game sold 7million, and 21million.

If you adapt the ratio then there's a 110 million gap between top selling PS2 games and units sold.

So 110/160 PS2s were only used as DVD players.
>>
>>747878503
Honestly a hard question to accurately answer as I think (at least in my case) the motivation was 100% games, but you used "DVD" to get your parents to buy it so their motivation was different, but obviously they paid for it, but then you used it mostly for games.

So I think it was mostly bought for games on the basis that it could play DVDs kek
>>
>>747875717
Dreamcast was raped by rampant piracy. I think it was a great console.
PS2 was also a DVD player which alone sold consoles in huge numbers.
They had momentum from PS era and also had massive amount of exclusives for various genres.
Gamecube didn't have DVDs and while it improved on third party lineup from N64 it did not match PS2. Not even close.
Xbox arrived late and some great games but 360 was the real thing not long after.
>>
>>747878503
The DVD argument is overblown. By the time the PS2 came out, DVD players were much cheaper than PS2s. $399 for PS2, Sony's own DVD players were $250 with companies like Sharp as low as $199. People got the PS2 for games, being a DVD player was a bonus. If it made a difference, then it would've been not having to get an extra DVD player for the kid's/kids' room.
>>
>>747878723
This indicates a large amount of games.

PS2 had the highest software attachment rate of any console ever at 10.
>>
>>747879547
>The DVD argument is overblown.
Not if you look at the number of PS2's sold vs games sold. The majority of PS2's simply weren't being used for games.
>>
>>747879636
>>747879560
>>
>>747875717
It was the world's cheapest DVD player by a considerable margin. Dedicated units cost double, if not triple the price at the time, and the PS2 also played games on top. So if you weren't in it for the video games, you'd buy it for your home entertainment setup.
>>
>>747879636
This argument stupidly assumes that everyone wanted the same games, which is a stupid NPC argument put forward by braindead morons. Higher sales for the consoles means the audience for the games is a fuckton more diversified.

>>747879731

Xbox you had to pay for a proprietary remote to use it as a DVD player, and no one had it. I guess it's how Microsoft tried to justify having to pay Sony for their DVD technology by passing it on to the end user, which failed as it should have. And I guess that's why they went with the HD-DVD for the xbox 360, trying not to use their competitors technology.

SONY had a hatefueled boner for Nintendo around this time and was going for the jugular. It all stemmed from the Nintendo PlayStation hybrid console when Nintendo tried to screw SONY over. This enraged SONY and made them focus all of their efforts on simply dominating their rivals main market.

In the early years of PS1 and PS2 adverts for the consoles were aimed at teens and used music video like editing to attract attention. The messaging was simple "we do what Nintendont". This worked amazingly as kids everywhere went for the PS2. They thought the Gamecube was for kids and would get called a fag if they got one.

Another thing that helped was Nintendo getting cocky in the past and pissing off developers. They refused to move away from cartridges which massively limited game size and scope. One such aftermath of this was the colossus Squaresoft going exclusive with PlayStation.

Tldr. Very complex but to jap companies were fighting and nintendo got cocky.

Nintendo heavily curated their console for better or worse.
So the best selling game was going to be bought by a substantial % of the console userbase.
Sony didn't curate the PS2's library much at all. It was closer to Steam. Where the most popular games don't make up a large % of the total userbase because there is not a lot of concentration.

You're mixing up AVGN copycats ranting about "old 2D bullshit" games because AVGN himself ranted about SNES games, so the copy cats ranted about (often) the same games. It wasn't people giving a shit about nintendo, but copycats wanting to be the next AVGN.

Anyway the biggest thing that dominated early youtube was halo machinma style videos because halo 3 was literally at it's peak popularity when youtube came out.

PS1 was the most sold console on the planet by a huge margin at the time, everybody owned one, and everybody wanted a PS2. It had absolutely insane hype. DVD player and DVD games, 75 million polygons per second, Saddam is using it to power ICBMs, Emotion Engine, I could go on and on. It should also be noted that early game demos showed FMVs or faked footage, so everyone thought it would look totally bonkers. There was even a FF7 trailer for it (it was just one of the characters from the back, then zoomed out to show the entire city, but it floored everyone).

And it also had no legitimate competition when it came out. Sega was killing themselves, Nintendo was busy shooting themselves in the foot, and the Xbox was a PC in a box with no track record (but offering great value for the price). But the PS2 was already out for a year by the time the Gamecube and Xbox came out, which made a huge difference.

No, that was the PS3.

PS2 still had real games.
>>
>>747875717
It had games.
P.S. many consoles fail at this simple step
>>
>>747883874
No it definitely started on PS2 with GTA and its many clones.
>>
>>747883874
The best selling PS2 games are Grand Theft Auto 3 and San Andreas and Gran Turismo 3 and 4. It is quite literally gun and ball ground zero.
>>
Take away the DVD player aspect and it wouldn't have sold as much but it still would have won the generation by a landslide. Gamecube's smaller discs were a big disadvantage and Xbox was a new player with little appeal in the Japanese market. Nintendo would've narrowed the gap a lot if they went for a normal disc format.
>>
>>747883971
>>747884079
That's ignoring that the console had literally thousands of non-GTA games.
>>
>>747875717
DVD player, and Nintendo shitting itself since the N64.
>>
>>747883874
No he's absolutely right. Just look at what happened to platformers. Both Naughty Dog and Insomniac continued to make 'platformer-like' games, but both Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank converged into 3rd person shooters, which they then focused on over games that were actually about utilizing 3D space.
>>
>>747884328
Most of them are shit, including GTA. It has thousands of games, yet most are generic 3D dogshit like we have now.
>>
Good to see PS2 still has tendies mind broken 26 years later.
>>

Wow. Turns out the only thing that isn't slop is the thing that Nintendo were making!

Not bad. As far as launches go you could be left with a lot worse before more games came.

ps1 ps2 ps3 were all created by Ken Kutaragi. He is commonly referred to as the Godfather of PlayStation.

dmc3 and silent hill
i'll get gta3 for my brithday and nothing else was worth playing there
luckily since i got a brother it was 4 games and my birthday 1 month later
but in my case it was only gta since i most likely got something for some other console
>>
>>747885007
The CHAD Kutaragi would literally bully his employees into adding more features to the consoles. He made PS3 his dream device and intended to sell it at a loss even at the $700 launch price. He cared more about creating a good console than any other in the industry.

His replacement was basically a money saving specialist which is gay af.
>>
>>747875717
It was the cheapest DVD player on the market. Yes, really. Plus it played games and was also a CD player for music. Looking back, it's wildly overrated. The best rated games on it are:

GTA3 - unplayable jank
tony hawk pro skater 3 - lol
madden 2003 - lol
MGS2 - movie game

Then it's a bunch of madden games lol

Meanwhile on the gamecube:

Metroid Prime - masterpiece
RE4 - masterpiece
Zelda - Masterpiece
SSBM - masterpiece

So to answer your question OP: it's normies

You're just repeating your favorite Nintendo YouTuber's rhetoric. DVD players were already being sold for $100 in 2000. Most DVD players also had CD playback.

PS2 was simply the most hyped and supported console of all time. It had the highest software attachment rate of any console ever at 10.0.
>>
>>747875717
>Even the well established Nintendo fell to the wayside.
That happened last gen too. Sony curbstomped everything in the 5th gen and for some reason you're ignoring that when that is the answer to your question. The pattern merely repeated itself again.

PS1 outsold the N64 3:1. Nobody "wanted" it for two reasons - cartridges were way more expensive than discs (and didn't run FMVs as well either) so third parties walked away, and the 4-player nature of the console meant you could play half its good games by going over to a friend's house, so you didn't even have to buy the thing yourself.

I don't ever remember there being a game drought on the PS2. If Sony wasn't releasing something, someone else was taking the spot. And this was back when the major 3rd partyt publishers were willing to experiment and output a bunch of side games on top of their annual crap and small publishers with modest budgets were still around.

Average DVD player price in the USA in the year 2000 was $225.

PS2 was $300 dollars in the year 2000.

The blatant lie that PS2 was bought exclusively for DVD playback is paddled exclusively by seething tendies.
>>
>>747886924
Obviously people bought the PS2 rather than putting the $75 dollar difference towards DVDs.

The Sony Playstation2 was not literally the cheapest DVD player but it was absolutely the cheapest reliable DVD player from a respectable company. If you were getting a 200$ dvd player you were risking shitty optical lens or shit audio quality or loose cable ports or god knows what else, and no matter what went wrong you were up a creek. With sony you were getting a quality machine, under warranty, with the ability to mail it in for repairs no questions asked. You werent getting a panasonic or a philips or another sony dvd player for less than 300.
