What was gaming in the 00s like?
That's the 90s this is the 00s
like gaming now but a bit less gayonly a bit though
>>748020269That's a good question, my friend. You used to buy games, and you would get a box. The box might have a book, and the book was the equivalent of the wikis you can find on the internet in 2026. I saved these images recently but couldn't find a reason to post them. It's a game I used to love when I was younger.
>>748020269Imagine the best time of your life, the happiest you've ever been, then triple it.
>AIslopping pictures of chain storesdead internet
>>748020371This is the book I mean, and it's officially called a manual.
>>748020426It's the closest gen Z will ever get. But it is a very weird thing to do I agree.
Gaming has never been better than it is today. You get tons of great modern games and can play retro games in a million different ways. Just this quarter alone we get E day, Control Resonant, OOT Remake, Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave, and GTA 6.
>>748020269I was living in an ex socialist country and in 00s we only started to get famicom and snes consoles.
Not that different from today, except you bought games in the store instead of downloading them.
>>748020269Taking a piece of paper to the magazine aisle and writing down the cheat codes without buying the magazine.
>>748020614>Gaming has never been better than it is todayHow old are you that you think that?
>>748020269>>748020341>>748020426>Soon we won't be able to find real retro gaming photos because people like OP will have drown them all out in a sea of fake AI images insteadWorst timeline.
>>748020269Hopeful.
>>748020653>Not that different from todayThat's not true at all. The internet is very different compared to back then, and I'll have to assume you weren't even there.
>>748020269mostly shit, until steam came along and saved gaming
WOW that console is 5 years old now! It means I can get it for a few bucks!
Transparent green consoles were readily available vs impossible to get limited edition variants.
>>748020674That's some scary shit that the images people would archive would probably have no way of knowing if it's AI or notInternet history being rewritten is probably worse than dead internet theory
>>748020614>Just this quarter alone we get E day, Control Resonant, OOT Remake, Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave, and GTA 6.There's something genuinely wrong with your brain if you think these games are worth celebrating in any capacity
>>748020674@grok generate a video of a man interviewing people at 2:30 am in a seven eleven near disney world. asmr large breasts
>>748020792I felt like you for about a decade because I was being swallowed in masters, saving for a home, etc but now that I have some stability I like things again.
like this
>>748020726In the 00's? No, I was on the internet then, at least for the latter half. And I think I didn't have steam until quite a bit later. Now, the internet was a lot better back then, that's indisputable.
>>748020795
>>748020269imagine everything played like the day one release and you had no installs or dlc/microtransactions. if you wanted more content you had to hope for a sequel. a lot of anons also say they were prone to get shitty games because the internet didnt exist but i always found magazines to be reliable. would i get banned if i started a general magazine thread on /lit/? thats its own nostalgia to me because we had tons of subscriptions
>>748020341>>748020674Honestly my subconscious knew something was off because the image quality was too high for something that would've been taken in the 2000s. It looks like it was taken on a modern day iPhone, but it should be lower res and have duller color grading. Like this mockup I did in picrel
>>748020269I just sent this photo to chatgpt and it thought it was real, not AI generated. We are fucked.
>>748021037>no installsBull fucking shit, larper. You clearly didn't have a PS3
>>748020946>the internet was a lot better back then, that's indisputable. Why would you say it's not that different, then? Considering we had the internet back then, and you could play games on the internet, it would be a lie to say that gaming is the same. If I play multiplayer games today, I just get banned a lot. They added report systems to games so it's much easier to get banned on the modern internet. That's why it bothers me when someone claims things were the same back then.
>>748021101i guess i dont count those as the whole of the 2000’s because i didnt know a lot of people who would get the consoles on release. most people i knew were saving up for a ps3 until 08, and the ps2/gamecube define the decade better. but yeah, second half was the beginning of the end
>>748021118Because I exclusively play single player games, I guess. It doesn't really make much difference for me whether I buy them at a story, order them on Amazon or download them. It's the internet itself that I miss more. Less centralized. More small, specialized forums. Less algorithms telling you what you should be browsing. You went on there, searched for what you're interested in and went on your way.
You'd see shit like this on the train like it was normal.I miss Obama.
>>748021382Why wouldn't you see this anymore today? If anything gaming is much more popular and normalized than it was 20 years ago. Especially handheld gaming, with the Switch
I just went by the game coversfound some good games that way
>>748020776Yeah, real historical photos being buried under AI slop is going to become a real issue fast. If it isn't already.People like OP are doing it intentionally too. When they get called out for it they just hand wave the issue away, like they've done nothing wrong. In another 5 years when you google "best buy 1999" it's going to be all AI generated stuff like OP.
>>748021469Portables arent portable and most people just browse shit on social with smartphones.
>>748021382>I miss ObamaKill yourself
>>748020747>modern console is now 5 years old>It’s even more moneySuch a gay timeline
>>748021353>It's the internet itself that I miss more. Less centralized. More small, specialized forums.I was on a forum before I came to 4chan, and it was a Warcraft 3 forum, because that's what I played. I don't think I miss forum posting, because it was a lot slower compared to 4chan. 4chan is closer to a chat room than a forum.
>>748020674>>748021040You should be able to tell its fake in one second considering the big ass fucking Halo poster is clearly using a Halo 4 render.
>>748020269>>748020341i've been pirating games since the 2000s so i never knew these feels
>>748021118>If I play multiplayer games today, I just get banned a lot. That's called a personality problem. Back in the day you'd probably get banned for being "That guy".
>>748021527Can't wait for those $5000 checks anon
>>748021382>I miss Obama.Obama is the literal reason why you don't see this anymore.
post real gaming images
>>748021501I do really miss portables. I always felt like portables like the GBA and DS were sort of like the last bastion of true retro gaming, since due to the hardware limitations they still looked and played like SNES games despite being made in the 2000s. But now the hardware is too good and Switch ports are just straight ports of Playstation/Xbox games. And now the only "retro games" we get are gay pandering poser indie games, which just aren't the same
>>748021563>It's okay if people try to pass off fake photos as real because you should know it's fake>No I won't disclose its fake in the original post, only once you've "caught" meWhat causes this mind set?
>>748021719Look up duper's delight.
>>748020674You should see Pinterest, it's nothing but slop as far as the eye can see being passed off as real images.
>>748020341lol why is Sapphire 10 bucks cheaper than Ruby?
>>748021687Balding boomer second from left represents 75% of this site
>>748020341no it is late 90s which also is early 00's. I had a gameboy color and n64 in 00's. i still have my n64. i got two of those and two dreamcasts and two gamecubes cause my parents split up.
>>748020341one of the biggest tells of AI is the font. it's always the same font no matter what it generates. (unless told to change it, but people rarely seem to do that)the same for any AI generated websites. they always look the same.
>>748021687I worked at a GameStop from 2009 to 2011. I thought gaming was dying and I was right BUT it was a thousand times better than it is today.
>>748021785Yeah, I used to use it but shit is a mess now. You can at least strong arm google to show real images with the "before:2022" line. But even that only works like 60% of the time.
>>748021491Facebook is horrible for that. I noticed a shit ton of AI 9/11 pictures being shared as real with the people in the windows, and of course boomers who don't know any better totally eating it up.
>>748020269It was like sailing to frontier America, you were in uncharted lands. The future was hopeful, people were making cool ass games, tech was allowing devs to get creative, shareholders and greedy CEO's weren't sucking the life out of the industry yet, it was niche but also big enough that there was money and resources plugged into it for creativity and curiosity for ideas. Journalists, devs, and gamers were actually united, IGN was trusted, no identity politics, no sweet baby inc type of bullshit anywhere. Games were made by nerds for other nerds who loved games and quality escapism into interesting and cool places. Money ruins everything though, and as soon as games started invading normie spaces and greedy cunts realized you could make a dime off it, it was over. Now an idea or a line of dialogue has to go through multiple offices just to get approved, that wasn't a thing back then, Halo CE was made by less than 100 people, Halo Campaign devolved was made by 2,000+ people, most of them are just advisors and consult on what goes or does not go into the game. No wonder game devs are going broke. They spend half their budget on whether something is offensive or not, this was never a thing back then, a handful of likeminded individuals got together and made cool shit. That's what it was like.
>>748021838Right now, yeah. But like the spaghetti will smith images, or hands, it's eventually going to get better. Once it does I legitimately expect shit like this to show up in kids textbooks when they're covering y2k.
>>748021862One of the few good things about Reddit is they usually do a good job at curating all of that by deleting AI slop in subreddits dedicated to sharing images/media.
>>748021587>Russia, China, and BrazilYikes
>>748021758and now look how it ruined so many people, half that room would be trannies and soys now
>>748021849For some reason, when I think of 2009-2010 gaming I think of shitty flashy melodramatic anime games in legacy franchises like FFXIII, Resident Evil 5, Other M, and Skyward Sword. It was shit, but it was at least a different flavor of shit from the shit we have now
>>748021719Retard, I didn't say any of that. I said you're stupid for not figuring it out instantly and even being remotely tricked by it.Not the person who posted it by the way.
it has come to a point that i don't know what is real or ai anymore
>>748022040
>>748022007cringeI'll rather enjoy AI Kino than go to that trash site.
>>748020269Early 2000's? You didn't have a clue what was going on in the industry or what games were being developed beyond what you read in magazines with just few images to work your imagination with. A lot of times games just flew under your radar and dropped unceremoniously and you had no idea you were about to play kino. Late 2000's was different, internet exploded and the mystique was gone you already knew what was coming out a year in advance.
>>748022187>wake up anon, we are going to video game world>wtf mom i said i wanted to go to Disney land i already have video games at home you stupid cunt
Blockbuster was kinda shit, but what I do miss are the mom and pop video stores. Cheaper, more interesting collections, and even as someone who likes replaying games multiple times, getting a full playthrough in 4 days was a good deal if you were poor. There's something to be said as well about having a time limit where you make time for a game... rather than infinite choices like we have now. It just felt more normal.
>>748021040>Honestly my subconscious knew something was offhow are luddites this fucking stupidit's entirely anachronistic. you should've been able to clock that it was fake without a community note, like how people can clock that you aren't a real woman in real life.
>>748021890I dont get why people waste their time making AI videos of the nost mundane shit on Facebook like dogs at the vet or cooking a meal. Then people call them out for it AI and the person who posted it first denies it's AI then offers no explanation why they made it. I get using it to make funny or weird over the top shit but they dont use it for that they use it to things you can already find videos of online or film yourself. Ita just lazy
>>748022363>*slaps her to the ground*>You stupid bitch... you stupid fuckin whore>*unbuckles belt*>I'll teach you to fuck with me, mom!! Take me to video game world will you...

>>748020529>It's the closest gen Z will ever get. But why? Real photos of these places exist, it wasn't *that* long ago. When did Toys R Us go out of business? 2018?
>>748022187>it has come to a point that i don't know what is real or ai anymoreWhy does it matter? It's funny to me how scared the peasants are of AI. If you were talking to someone (and had no idea it was AI, but found out later it was), would that bother you?
>>748020269I was reading Nintendo Power off of the grocery store shelves in the morning before school. And my mom would let me rent games from Blockbuster. Always got the most random shit.
>>748022538
>>748022574>if you were having sex with a woman but later found out it was actually a man, would that bother you?
>>748022552Because all the real photos are being replaced by AI images people are passing off as real. Why google toys r us when grok can just show you what it was like?
>>748022005>Once it does I legitimately expect shit like this to show up in kids textbooks when they're covering y2kThere's something unbelievably horrifying about the inevitability of AI getting good enough that there's absolutely no way to tell what historical images are real and which ones are fake.

We could have scourged up 4 more dollars and returned on another day but we found it so demoralizing that we just took back our shares to do something else with it.

>>748024539Eh, I get his point. In another 30 years nobody is going to know what is real or fake anymore. Just look at how much AI has advanced in half a decade. You're going to have people in the 2050s with y2k mania like we have 80s mania right now. >>748024550Start with one website that you know was popular back then and then once you get as many images as you want off of there, you can scour for links to other cool websites in the community news posts and affiliate sidebars. The Internet used to truly have a big web feel to it, and webmasters would link to other sites they knew of and liked regularly. There even used to be aggregate sites for the Top 100 of whatever topic, just a page of 100 links to popular websites surrounding whatever. You can also sort websites by file type on the Wayback Machine, which makes it even easier, pic related as an example.
>>748024602But I'm not arguing that it was real, see you are hallucinating again because you are too dumb to hold conceptual conversations. Stick to talking about last ball game and gossips, you cannot handle even rudimentary concepts and this is critical because the problem is not that you have a limit to how many concepts you are able to consider as possible, we all have a limit, the problem is that your limit is so low that it makes it difficult for you to understand the very concept that you are too dumb to handle concepts in the first place.

The average person can already not reliably tell the difference between curated AI picture/video. Go on FB or YT comments underAI media and see for yourself. We aren't 10 years away. We're like a year away, at most. The logarithmic trend in the last few years will be reversed by a thermo/materials breakthrough, like it always is.

The process will be slow because humans are slow to change even when saturated in a new paradigm, and that's going to be a meaningful bottleneck in the next 60-80 years. >>748029312>>748029327Yep, and the jump from SNES/Genesis to PS1/N64/Saturn killed some devs too, Technos comes to mind. We should have froze gaming around when the Dreamcast released and the other three consoles debuted. That was as good as it got, mainly that could have kept SEGA in the console business and they could try to balance things out with software sales.

>>748028012I'd argue that it's not so much about the depicting the era itself as it is about depicting what the people of the time thought the future would look like. It's no different than looking at back what people in 1910 thought 2000 would look like and having a chuckle at their optimism too.

>>748022528>>748023656It's the lazy man's content farm. They spend all their time on social media. When they see people getting attention for posting interesting things, they also want in on that, but they can't, either because they are too lazy to actually capture, edit and post it, or because they literally don't have anything interesting going on (because they are lazy and don't do anything). With AI however, they can avoid both those things. Don't have anything interesting to share? AI generate something interesting. Have something interesting to share? Why go through the effort of capturing and editing? Just have an AI recreate or work off of it and then post that instead. They then get all the big boy attention from clueless boomers and women, and that's not even considering the profit opportunities they can implement such as sponsorships.
>>748021849Im convinced POS google will one day remove that command too. Hope someones working on a better search engine.
>>748031193>Light pollution is bad and this is trying to focus light where is should beThat is not how light or light pollution works. The old bulbs emitted wavelengths in the lower visual band and were fully refracted at shorter ranges. LEDs emit higher frequency wavelengths in the visual band (hence why it is white light) and travel longer distances before rayleigh scattering gets it, they therefore make light pollution much worse than the old bulbs. The installation of LEDs had nothing to do with focusing light or providing better clarity or any of that kind of bullshit, it was simply to cut down on maintenance and the drain on power grids as suburbs expanded. For reference, suburbs don't even need white lights to be navigable at night, yellow bulbs provided sufficient illumination in addition to vehicle headlights. The rare pedestrian traffic at these times didn't need it either.
>>748028476I feel you. Can't even go for an early morning walk without getting flashbanged by a car a mile down the road. They really need to ban headlights that bright for anything other than an emergency response vehicle and if you are so night blind that you can't see without turning the mile ahead of you into day time then maybe you shouldn't be driving in the dark in the first place.

>the xbox ruined pc gaming by buying a bunch of successful PC exclusive studios and forced them to make console trashIt was a grim time. RTS died, Adventure games died, tactical FPS died, RPGs died for a long time and FPS became gay shit like Halo. The cover shooter was born and was incredibly lame, a game of whack a mole. Gears did it alright, but for the most part it sucked. Everything was brown with bloom, including Zelda. It was a dark time of corporate takeover and dead creativity. We had no indie games back then and anything taht required more than an iq of 80 was shitcanneed by studios. It was the age of EA, Ubishit and Activision. THQ tried but failed to keep some spark going.
>>748023271They became terrible around like 2010s but that was a lifesaver for 10 year old me, surprised they seem to be totally forgotten, it was like game pass before game pass.
>>748032716I miss scene girls, I don't care what anyone thinks.
>>748032950>RTS diedRTS dying was no one's fault. It was a holdover from when gaming was a niche for a small selection of nerds that made up the primary gaming market up to that point, it was never going to survive the console boom and gaming going mainstream in the 00s.
>>748032950My latest bit of culture shock was seeing people nostalgic for the MSG3 piss filter when it was absent from the remake.
You walked in, bought your game, went home, put it in your console or installed it on your PC, and played it. If it sucked you could take it to FuncoLand or wherever and trade it in, or sell it on eBay. Back then you probably wouldn't get ripped off selling it online. You could also still rent physical games even in stores which weren't dedicated game stores. Online was really just getting started and was an option, not a requirement. It was a really good time to play video games, just from the sheer amount of choices alone.
>>748020657...until they started selling gaming magazines in plastic wrap. Fuck that.Imagine paying for a magazine to look at pictures like a cuck instead of buying 5-6 pirated games for the same price.I'm grateful they exist though because one of the Playstation magazines we bought had a guide for Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow which we had and couldn't figure out, and Red Dead Revolver which we didn't have at that point but goddamn whet our appetite for it and was well worth it when we eventually bought it.It also had this screenshot which was great fap fuel. Still haven't played Soul Calibur nor cared for it.
>>748026793What happened between 2003 and 2005?
Video games had a choice between being creative entertainment for everyone or children's entertainment and they went with the latter.
To me, I can at least accept that while games in the 00s were great, you had to be either too geeked into the gaming stuff like magazines or TV shows, or dead fucking god you had a pc that was actually the family computer and instead of looking up for boobies, you would stumble on some blog stuff that actually talk games because otherwise you had shit like Ratatouille for the PS2, Shark Tale for the Gamecube and Spongebob SquarePants for the GBA at home. Ain't no one buying shit that was niche at that time.Fuck, I still regret that I saw a bundle that included the three DMCs and one that was Ea sports games at Walmart, and I picked the Madden one while my cousin grabbed the DMC one, while my dumb ass grabbed the sports one because I thought sports were cooler back in the day. Fuck.

>>748022387I remember one year they had a summer pass where you can rent unlimited games for 3 months, for I think $60. You just could only take out one at a time. I spent that entire summer just playing my local Blockbuster's entire Gamecube collection. Shit was amazing.
>>748028476>notice on the left, you see MORE area overall>even though right is better lit in the areas that are lit>you actually see MORE on the leftThis is an issue with the way the light is diffused, not whether it's LED or not. What's more annoying is that since the light is set to be focused and intense, this makes it easier for somebody to do sneaky shit in the "after" pic since the non-illuminated spots are truly dark.

>>748033360Most real fans were "geeked in" be it online or in the magazines and guidebooks available everywhere, at every mall or newsstand. Even going back to the 90s and 80s where there was shovelware, if you were lucky enough to get games as presents, your parents knew which ones you wanted specifically so you wouldn't end up with garbage. Not counting imports which were their own thing - that required real commitment and knowledge.

>>748033580Are they really? Its hard to tell since the Metastatic Tourist Incursion . I know some of us are >here foreverbut I didn't know if we were dealing with a decade worth of tourist faggotry with a dropoff in newfags coming to the site outside of that, or if its really younger people showing up here as we did in the mid 2000s and they're just broken because they grew up in an era where not only social media, but all the garbage that came with it has come to fruition.

>>748026416I genuinely want a room like this
>>748034281There were a lot polls in the 2010s aimed at getting some sort of read on the demographics here arranged by anons who were just curious about the data, while they weren't comprehensive and are somewhat unreliable, the trend that kept coming up over and over was that anons were in their early 20s. So to be clear, I am extrapolating from a limited data set. Most anons seem to move on from 4chan by their 30s, obviously with exceptions. In addition to that, it explains the subtler shifts in board culture that happens every 5 or 6 years as newfags show up and oldfags graduate. So, yeah, I'm willing to bet anons curious about what gaming was like in the 00s are genuine about it. I look at it like how people are nostalgic for the 80s aesthetic even if they never lived the period.

>>748034491To use the nerdiest possible reference, I'll never not be grateful that I was alive to see that era, but I can totally understand why the Elves that saw the Two Trees of Valinor were fucking depressed by what came after the fall and the contrast. We had the choice and requirement to seek out culture online of interest - we had not yet been algorithmically bubbled into a few sites, with all the same content happening on (non-searchable for the most part) platforms. When I made fan translation and undubs, they were always available on torrent sites and the like - now we see some mods and projects censored off major hosting, and others confined to some Discord faggotry that if it ever gets shut down, nobody will be able to pick it up because its just some goddamn channel with a link to some google drive or whatever file share. Pic related's data ended over a decade ago.. I can only imagine how much worse things are now>>748034868>So, yeah, I'm willing to bet anons curious about what gaming was like in the 00s are genuine about it. I look at it like how people are nostalgic for the 80s aesthetic even if they never lived the period.I don't begrudge them that. The problem is that its seemingly only the aesthetic they give a shit about. If you're going to say OH YEAH MAN IT WAS SO MUCH BETTER AND MORE BASED BACK THEN when you make your xitter post with some vague approximation, its just a literal meme unless you give a shit why it was better. You say everything sucks now, but you don't change your behavior to be less cancerous or are willing to take on the values of that era (including how this site and its culture sprung out of the old hacker ethos - why anonymity, online privacy, security , FOSS, splitting the online and offline world , are part of it) then its just a momentary skinwalking fad. >>748035714I'm sorry, I can't fit it all overlayed on a dancing tiktok. >>748035831Well, you got something good on unfortunate repeat

>>748033853>This is an issue with the way the light is diffused, not whether it's LED or not. It's because of the intensity of white LEDs. Equally diffused, you'd still see this effect because the chemical lamps produce less light, so there's less difference between light and dark areas. Eyes and sensors can adjust to low intensity light, they have trouble with high intensity light in dark areas.
