Why is he and Valve so beloved while companies like Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft are seen as evil?

>Valve addressed the major problem of the 2000s, which was that companies like EA sucked at actually selling games, so they took steps to fix it and have generally attempted to make selling and buying games as easy and convenient as possible
>Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft instead clung to their dead console paradigm, because the "console" title let them ignore a lot of consumer protections with their locked down shitboxes. Consoles attempting to cling to life dragged down the entire industry because they couldn't keep up with hardware and controller innovation, Sony was even responsible for Securom.

Valve isn't great, but they're the lesser evil and didn't actively try to ruin gaming.
>inb4 some copypasta trying to attribute shit from Bethesda, Activision and EA to Valve

Both are overrated, but still generally doing better for their actual customers than almost any other company in the games industry.
>>
>>748081425
because a lot of what valve does is actually consumer friendly
they are serving the consumer and not just sucking off the shareholders
>>
>>748081425
Private company, so Valve's loyalty is typical towards consumers since consumers are really their only source of revenue.
Most of Valve's judgement will be towards attracting and maintaining consumers
Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft are publicly traded so often their actions will be geared towards bolstering their investors. This can sometimes lead to unfriendly practices towards consumers.

Double edged sword though as we found out when Valve attempted to enter the hardware space. Investor capital is really good at mitigating large cost like with Consoles. Valve doesn't have that luxury so it's true cost gets passed to the consumer, which is why the Steam Machine was going for over 1k.
>>
>>748081425
They are all seen as evil by haters and good by people satisfied with their purchases. We have enough Valve hate threads on this board to testify to that. Which you hear hated and loved more is a matter of what bubbles you frequent.

Even if Valve is greedy, they’re not suicidally greedy and they even do some actually good things for PC gaming at times, such as advancing gaming on Linux.

I hate it when people act like Newell is their friend, but sure, I give Valve credit for not just thinking about the next financial quarter but having more interest in building long term customer relations.

Because people associate good games with steam, which in turn is associated with valve.
When you play any of their current games you'll quickly find out that they're just as creatively bankrupt, out of touch and cartoonishly greedy and evil as any other company.
This has manifested in their hardware division, where with infinite research budget and time they've shat out a mediocre controller, an overpriced console analogue with literally 0 exclusives, and a steam frame that will undersell their fucking $1000 handheld (no, not the deck as a whole which already has abysmal sales figures, just the $1000 variant of that handheld)
It's not a competence crisis, it's a willingness to be incompetent.

Valve is good because they make everything on PC "just work". Games will just work even if you play them on an OS where they shouldn't work. Controllers will not only just work, but they work better than they do on the console they were originally made for. They also don't add any extra costs for playing online. Aside from that, they generally don't do anything, which is a winning strategy. Their negatives are exclusively associated with games I don't play, so they are easier to ignore.

Nintendo is good because they make loads of 1st party games that are generally good quality. Their only downside is that they never drop prices and will also get over confident to push bad practices like $80 for MKW. Paying extra for online is a big negative.

Sony and Microsoft are bad because they represent everything bad about modern video games. I hold a grudge against Sony in particular because they used to fund a large amount of 1st and 3rd party games with a lot of variety that fit all types of possible tastes but now care about nothing but the most generic games in the hope of maximizing profit. Paying extra for online is also a big negative here too.

Because Valve adapted to the consumer base and market it supports whilst everyone else has done everything in their power to make things actively worse for their consumer base. Any number of criticisms can be levelled at Valve over the years but ultimately they invariably ended up erring on the side of the consumer and catering towards making their platform better for the end consumer. Every other platform that is in some degree a competitor has consciously decided not to do this. So by a simple process of elimination Valve ends up the winner.

It's a private company, therefor not pressured by investors.
Has done several pro-consumer actions, all of which considered unthinkable.

An example, games don't have ads internally due to Valve forbidding them.

>Nintendo
No one hate his fans more than Nintendo.

Nindendo is quite famous for being the most petty company.
They denied to stream their games to a streaming charity.
Several times they striked mods, only to copy the idea shortly after.
Their sales simply suck.
Their patents threat the industry.

>Sony
Woke (this implies several negative things beyond the performative activism, like the degradation of art and hypocrisy).
Hates the idea of cross-play, for some reason.
They were fine with Concord, but get pissy about Kojima.
Their anti-physical stunt is aimed to create a monopoly in which they can sell the games only through their store with higher prices.
Constantly try to force for email subscription in order to use that subscriber number to deceive investors (see the Helldivers 2 fiasco).

>Microsoft
Woke.
They try to inject their operative system with every sort of telemetry and AI, bloating it to absurd levels and making it to act like a spyware.
Does nothing about the studios that ruined Halo and Gears of War, yet it destroyed the creators of Hi-Fi Rush over retarded reasons.

Half Life 2 needed internet for one-time verification and then you'd be able to play offline so this was basically claiming that your internet is too shit to open a website in reasonable time, or that you don't have it at all.
Besides all through the 2000's people were just happily downloading games from the internet at such a rate that the industry was terrified of PC piracy, what is this revisionism?

Go back to your famitsu hugbox.
>>
>>748081425
I mean this is a dumb question.
But it boils down to being a private company and loyalty and dedication to the consumer.

Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo don't have real owners they have temporary CEOs, whereas with Valve what you see is what you get.

Next, Microsoft and Sony don't have the touch of quality that Nintendo or Valve have.

Nintendo is the closest to Valve in terms of customer loyalty but Nintendo releases gen after gen of platforms so frequently that have felt mediocre. Like Gamecube was bad, Wii was bad, and I gave up following on whatever came after.

Also Valve continues to support their games for a long time generally so it doesn't feel like they released a cashgrab then abandon it for the next project. Dota 2 is 13 years old at this point and still getting updates.
>>
>>748084912
It did start out as a Sony hugbox yeah. Whatever happened there?

>>748084671
Just like the controller I was using before I bought the steam controller. Valve controller software works well and lets you make really complex mappings. The 8bitdo software was terrible by comparison and I would never use a controller that doesn't need extra software to run since that means that controller wouldn't be able to do anything useful. Good controller support is genuinely one of the main reasons I play PC games over consoles.

unless the game has more than one dlc. then you have to manually click through the wizard for each and every single one individually because gog doesn't actually give a shit about it's customers and thinks drm-free is a magic word.
>>
>>748084907
Needing a connection at all was the crux of the issue as many outside the US needed to still manually connect to dial up to be online. It was rightly felt to be a needless DRM check at the time. Don't get me wrong Steam as a digital distribution platform was perfect valid and arguably the future of the industry, but it was ahead of its time for the majority of the world back when it launched. So ultimately people bought a physical game from a retail store and suddenly found they needed to enact internet access just to play the SP game they bought which was rightly bullshit.
>>
>>748085040
yes, it's a completely unlocked bootloader and the only real differences between steamos and other distros is that you're running older packages for stability
>>

And yet again mr. Ranjit the fact that other companies exist doesn't change the fact the only reason Valve did it was because they got sued and was forced to do so.

Yeah man, I'm sure this is why GoG still gets indie games.
>A-AND THEY'RE OUTDATED BY LIKE 2 YEARS RIGHT???
No the indies I have on gog did a decent job keeping up with Steam, the biggest offender I'm aware of is Death Road to Canada which is outdated by like a year and Klei which really don't seem to care much about GoG customers.
>>
>>748085273
What's preventing these other companies from being better than Valve and doing what Valve did without being sued?
>>
>>748081425
You're israeli, you wouldn't understand.
>>
>>748085171
It is still a moot point given that they can't supersede ACCC law. Hell the reason why they do refunds is because they got dragged by the ACCC for not complying with business practices in Australia. So they can out whatever they want in their T&Cs, it is irrelevant if a government body decides it doesn't comply with the law in their country. This isn't unique to their situation either. Plenty of corporations have found their T&Cs are irrelevant to legal proceedings. It just comes down to an equation of whether compliance costs more than non-compliance and abandoning the affected country. And the majority of time compliance costs less than non-compliance coupled with abandoning.

Valve has done some shitty stuff and is ultimately a DRM service to sell you digital only licenses. However, they have also done multiple pro-consumer things. Steam Family Share is one of the best things put out for digital gaming ever and I don't believe the other big names have anything like it. Valve also allows you to refund games very easily even outside the scope of their 2 hours/2 weeks policy. They do a decent job at advertising smaller games to you. They provide a lot of services for devs, etc.

Basically, with Steam it feels like give and take. It is not always equal, but you don't feel empty handed. With the other guys it feels like them taking as much as they can. This is not a defense of Steam and more like a condemnation of Sony who loves to randomly steal your movies, games, TV shows, etc.

He looks like Santa Claus. Also he kinda revitalized PC gaming, when the people pushing their separate entertainment boxes were very invested into having it die (even Microsoft in their retardation wanted to separate gaming from the PC to double-dip, despite most everyone running Windows). I know this is a shitpost thread, but I still remember the time where a lot of things I wanted to play were exclusive to some console, like getting Japanese or action games on PC was practically unthinkable. We had RTS and isometric RPGs. But eventually, thanks to Steam making PC gaming such a viable market, you suddenly had those kinda games coming to PC, first as shitty console ports, but these days we get practically everything and often with PC as the main platform. Also Steam works decently. Not like there are no flaws, but apparently that "okay" standard has yet to be outdone by the major gaming companies of the world, who in response to seeing the bar on the ground keep reaching for a shovel.

Pretty sure the core concept behind a battlepass didn't even originate with DOTA2. It was just the final instance of a popular IP to implement it. Regardless there is no interpretation in which Valve is responsible for it. Nor is the core concept itself bad and only the implementation of it being haggled over. Arguably the concept of a 'Season Pass' has done more damage to the industry even if there is some degree of cross over between the two.

Can't conceptualize that Valve can negotiate and bargain with publishers?
Too stupid to appreciate when they're able to make wins that benefit you?

Valve is a private company with one axiom:
>make customers happy enough to spend money
That's it, that's literally all they care about. You spending money, and they know you'll spend more when you're happy. It's a win-win.
>>
>>748081425
Because Steam is a cult, Tim was right they shouldn't be charging 30%
>>
Why are Valve-cucks and Anti-Valve cucks so retarded?
Steam did a lot to PC gaming and Linux as a whole and it also took some stinky shits here and there as well. Stop sucking off billionaires. Why hire PR teams when cucks like you their job for them free of charge?

Get steam and buy when shit goes on 90% sale.
Get Epic launcher and claim their free games or whatever the fuck they're shilling
FFS is it that hard? don't pick a side you faggots. Have you learnt nothing from politics?
>>
>>748087356
legitimately 0% chance this is an organic post
>>
>>748087270
This thread is an example that for a few pennies, you too, can hire third worlders to shit on your competition
>>
>>748086974
It should never be taken for granted how Steam managed to convince Japanese publishers to release on PC. 20 years ago most Japanese publishers saw PC as a platform for eroge and only used by pirates, now even Vanillaware are releasing Muramasa on PC.
>>

Have actually you payed?

Average retail profit margin - 7%
Steam profit margin - 40%

Pcbros think this is good

>PC IS SAVED!
And you ignore the fact Japs still hate Steam because the loathe DRM, and barely any japs ever put anything on steam
>>
>>748087367
30% is the default in retail days.
Cd costs got traded for digital rent costs.
Think of how much server and HDD costs have risen since the trade wars, crypto, and AI.
Surprised it hasn't hit Valve, granted they just rent akamai CDNs. But you'd think the CDNs would be affected and would charge Valve more money.
>>
>>748087510
you do know that the primary function of consoles is to enforce DRM, right?

Considering how Valve indian shills try to argue that Valve didn't invent the battlepass because cod did it years later, I guess so?
>>
>Valve invented the 'Battlepass'!
>Sure it was EA that complete shit up and exploited the concept but Valve invented it!
Ok fine, but then you also can't claim Valve is responsible for any instance of gambling in the games since the didn't invent gambling.
>>
>>748087510

Are you crazy? They deepthroat corporate boot like its going out of style.

30% is nothing compared to a global distribution network with lifetime support that costs nothing extra to release on. Anyone that cries about 30% cut whilst also ignoring what physical production and distribution and support costs entailed should be ignored.

Pretty much every new Japanese game is day and date on PC, Square Enix got burned so bad by FF7 Rebirth's launch that they gave up on timed exclusivity. It says a lot that Vanillaware, who's president notoriously hated PC gaming has bent the knee. Also Consoles are literal closed system DRM boxes that are soon to be digital only.
>>
>>748081425
Because there is now "Steam+" premium subscription tier consumer RAPE that every other company actively pushes. Steam is the only service that hasn't succumb to enshittification over time. In fact it gets better. like a good service should.
>>
>>748087406
Yeah, you're right, sorry, Valve is evil.

>JAPS HATE STEAM!!!
Then why did they start making better PC ports and putting them on steam?
>JAPS HATE DRM!!!
I find it quite doubtful considering they proved on several ocasions that they don't get the idea of "owning" a game and corporations are their religion.
>>
>>748087554
They really think optional DRM is worse than required DRM
>>

Wtf are you talking about they get shit constantly for their shitty game approval habits and extremely jewy lootboxes

They didn't, capcom is going to stop doing so because nobody bought the games and nobody cares.

Strange, tendies also claimed that Hollow Knight: silksong sold the best on Switch, but never provided proof for it. The game sold almost 10 million copies, and yet consoles could only maybe muster half a million at most.

>Japs (...) loathe DRM
The fuck are you smoking? Japs are giga corpo bootlickers that even the biggest westoid shills have nothing on. Japs don't understand ownership even when it comes to physical media and have some bizarre idea of authorship/IP that if the company told them to destroy all their copies they would and would reeeeee about how not doing so is illegal and defying the natural rights of the author or some shit.
>>
>>748088381

This thread proves otherwise. Japs REALLY hate scummy shit like Valve is doing about how you don't own games.

You explicitly do not own games purchased on the eshop, you bought a license and unlike PCs the console is locked down so unless you have a jailbroken Switch 1 you absolutely do not own the game.

They aren't allowed to because of Valve rules, as you can't make bigger sales on other platforms. You can thank valve for that.

Literally everybody who ever wanted one has one.
Sold 100% btw. Also, four milly is amazing for enthusiast hardware and started an entire new market.
The new price announcement may as well be announcing it was discontinued.
>>748089440
They wouldn't anyway, we've seen this with EGS exclusives, all sold at standard AAA prices except Alan Woke 2 which is published by Epic directly, so its price is a moot point.
>>
>>748089440
Then make the sales equal.

Gaben never removed a game from anybody's account, so what you're talking about is not possible.
