Why did this hand have zero cultural impact?

Like I think most people even forgot that it exists, it came and went without a sound. Even death stranding 1 had some discussion, but death stranding 2 had nothing.
>>
>>748145127
This *game

Fucking autocorrect
>>
>>748145127
The concept of Death Stranding was very prescient of the Pandemic but post-pandemic no one wants to be reminded of that shit. DS in general is basically a mystery box game, the hype for it was about what the fuck this even is. Then it came and now everyone knows, and quite a few people don't like it, so they aren't coming back for a sequel. It's too weird and too fucking boring to get a big audience
>>
>>748145127
It did have a cultural impact, it was the "weird" game of the PS5 generation.
>>
>>748145127
people played ds1 and after experiencing that pretentious slop didn't bother going back for round 2
the only thing ds1 produced was funny webms of falling down mountains
>>
>>748145127
media doesn't have cultural impact anymore, regardless of medium
you just consume and move on

Very obvious "twist"
>>
It was a Ps5 exclusive for a year and most people don't have Ps5s.
>>
>>748145127
The only impact the first one had was kojima drones going rabid whenever someone called it out for being a shitty walking simulator
nothing changed in 2 in that regard, so there isn't much to talk about
>>
>>748145127
Sony wanted a second one after seeing DS1 was a success, Kojima never wanted to make this game, he hates sequels
>>
>>748145127
In a perfect world we would have never gotten this game nobody asked for, OD came out and we're now only 2 years or so away from Physint
>>
>>748145536
Yeah its super weird to do timed exclusives
People dont buy consoles for that shit
You lose out on the other console sales
You lose out on combined marketing and mindshare effect
People go "I dont want to pay full price for an old game, wtf"
>>
>>748145741
In a perfect world Konami would still have Kojima on a leash and we would've gotten new SH, Castlevania, and MGS games on Fox Engine. Maybe Contra too. Maybe they let him do his Death Stranding bullshit on the side
>>
Sony did zero marketing for it(compared to DS1 at least) since they were already preparing to cut Kojimbo to make room in the budget for more live service slop and needed an excuse
>>
>>748145127
God that cover is so tryhard kojango... Hack
>>
>>748145127
Complete waste of time development-wise. Nobody wanted a sequel, and even playing it, it was clearly shit. The engine/gameplay was decent, but the story and plot was pointless. I would argue he used the decima engine better than US devs though, it's kind of embarrassing how bad Sony has used it.
>>
>>748145908
Yeah true, this was also a big reason why this didn't meet snoys sales expectations, there was ZERO marketing but they just spent 450k to get a wolverine ad on that las vegas sphere ball but desu for there not being any marketing and it was basically just Kojima alone who did the marketing the game sold surprisingly well, 2.5M copies is not a bad number
>>
>>748146068
>450k to get a wolverine ad on that las vegas sphere ball
remember that's per day, not a one time fee.
>>
>>748145127
Death Stranding didn’t need or even really leave the door open for a sequel, it’s an extremely complete story. This is pretty evident in the second game, which is a huge improvement and refinement in every area of gameplay but has a completely inconsequential narrative. Has some fun moments towards the end and more Higgs is welcome, but that’s about all it has to offer.
>>
For better and for worse, it was just more Death Stranding 1.
>>
>>748145127
Death Stranding was a cute novelty, but no one wanted to play delivery man simulator 2 electric boogaloo. It's really a one and done concept, and after Metal Gear most probably expected for Kojima to keep experimenting with new IPs, not this.
>>
>expect to have a baby strapped to your chest the entire game

I sure didnt, I borrowed my sisters. I loved DS2 but I sure wouldnt have if Id paid for an entire ps5 just to play it, and I never played anything else on it either. Neither does my sister it seems because its been over a year and Ive even offered multiple times to return it but she doesn't give a fuck.

Maybe physint is just that disastrous.
>>
>>748145127
Most people who played 1 did so because they were fooled into thinking it'd be good since it was a kojima game that he made without any tard handlers.
By 2 most people were already like "nah I'm good", even people who played the first game for the cutscenes. People just didn't want to go through all that shit again.
>>
>>748146814
>behind the scene material
there isn't any. they only just started hiring additional people for pre-production for physint back in january not to mention kojimbles already said the game is 5-6 years away last spring.
>>
Knew he was starting to crack after 1. Really liked the game but I think that came down to it being a very unique idea that was executed well by a competent team, but good lord it felt like he stumbled on a /v/ thread filled with every Kojima cliche in greentext form and treated it as a checklist. Naming a character Hot Coldman once is quirky, twice is a sign of dementia.
>>

Because it was a game made for the people that disliked the first so much. Everything is dumbed down to oblivion and worse compared to the first game. Not even joking.

As a sequel DS2 didn't really do anything new, it mostly just refined and iterated on things established in the first game.
A lot of the mystique of
>wtf it a game where you just walk around?!?
which drove interest and discussion around the original was gone for the sequel. It could have done with some twist or something to subvert expectations a bit.
Generally I feel it made too many compromises. It had much more action, gave you tons of gadgets and vehicles that trivialise the game too early and cheaply. When what it should have done is tripled down on the controversial aspects of the original. Even longer, slower, harder deliveries with limited gadgets, or totally subverted expectations somehow.
>>
>>748145127
>why did this cringe woke garbage with shitty writing have zero impact

dunno but agnes was right about Kojima, he can't write for shit and has the writing level of a child.
>>
>>748147180 cont.
As a sequel it was far too safe. If it tripled down on the traversal/difficulty it could have been a great streamerbait suffercore game like baby steps or something. Or if it had coop it could easily have been a friendslop hit (think a very polished version of peak or something).
Overall played too safe a missed some good opportunities, which is a bit disappointing considering how prescient the first game was and how tapped into the zeitgeist Kojima usually is
>>
>>748145127
My main issue with DS2 was that it reset Sam to his former zombie state from DS1, but even, made him arguably worse, instead of moving the plot forward where he is a self-actualised guy.
Then, he has friends that know information that could make him happy again, but they choose to keep that information from him... so he can focus on the job.
Then, all this crap is wrapped up in a sacharinne package with inspiring songs playing in the background and revealing that in the end, everyone just needed a hug, including the (recycled) bad guy. So yeah, fuck this game. It didn't need to be made, at least not in this form.
>>
>>748145127
Death Stranding 1 and 2 both deserved more attention. I think they're some of the best games and just media in general I've experienced.
It deserves a much wider audience.
I just wish the movie that's in production was the actual game's story with the real actors and not a separate story set in the world. I don't know how you'd boil the story down to a movie and keep some of those elements of when music starts and the camera pulls out to know you've reached your destination after a perilous journey.
It's just fucking incredible.
>>
I got the first game for free in the timmy's store and even now i haven't played it. In my mind is a 2deep4u void openworld walking simulator.

I thought him tackling the loss of a child was pretty heavy and not something you see often in games. The crew around him help him deal with the loss on his own terms, but were ready to help him when he realised what happened.

Fallout from the death stranding causes gateways to form above tectonic plate regions opening up previously inaccessible areas of the world like Australia for exploration. Sam, grieving the loss of Lou, is pulled out of retirement by AIPAC- sorry, AIPAS to chart these regions with Fragile and the crew of the deep tar-hunting vessel Magellan. Somehow, Higgs returned as a glam rock cyborg selling guns to survivors in these regions and stoking conflicts. AIPAS turns out to be some Jewish AI hivemind running on servers located on the beach, which plans to to digitise and enslave the consciousnesses of all remaining humans and wipe out organic life on earth to ensure another extinction entity can’t come into being. They resurrected Higgs to be their agent in meatspace with predictably terrible results. Lou turns out to have been alive on the beach all along, watched over by the ghost of Serpente Solido. Sam and Higgs have a guitar duel on the beach and Higgs dies for real this time when Lou’s extinction entity form eats him. Die-Hardman returns and reveals via a dance number he’d been onto AIPAS the entire time and orchestrated events to deal with them for good. Fragile was dead the entire time, her consciousness lingered on to guide Sam back to Lou. Sam finally gets to enjoy his retirement and Lou picks up the baton as the next courier.

The crew knew that the blonde chick he came back home with, was his daughter. Their decision: Lets keep him in a state of grief. He's in a flow state and the mission is important; we'll explain everything at an 'appropriate time'.

Those people are not friends. Even the wife can suck on a fuck. That said, I thoroughly blame the shitty writing. DS1 had shitty writing too, but I feel like things were more consistent there. Sam didn't have friends around him and everything was kept professional. Here, he's supposed to be surrounded by 'good people' but he is treated like an object.

I'm playing it now, and it's a fantastic game technically; animation at this level will probably only appear in GTA 6. As for the gameplay, it's like those survival games but AAA: you complete small tasks to earn new upgrades. It's perfect for podcasts and listening to music because nothing intense happens that often.

As much as I dislike Sony, I have to admit that Kojima has basically proven how much of a hack he is. The only good games he made are games from 20 years ago. Everthing after that has been some form of try-hard retardation that leans WAY to much into the movie bullshit rather than trying to be a game with cinematic sequences.

Genuinely, firing Kojima was probably Sony's best move in a long time considering the Death Stranding game showed how bad he is when he has infinite money and time to make a mediocre product. That and MGSV.
>>
>>748148543
You're wrong in the sense that, everything he criticised for is within the realm of his own creations. Compared to what snoy is churning out nowadays they are their own category of pathetic and beneath Kojima's productions in so many ways.
Ergo, dumping him, like dumping Japan Studio years earlier, were very big L moves.
>>
>>748148543
Konami wasn't wrong firing him. It's not Kojima, but the developers that should get the credit/praise. What they did with the FOX Engine, and also using Decima was great, but the games were terrible.
>>
>>748148543
Pretty obvious from just how over budget MGSV was and how much money he spent on just the marketing gimmicks and hiring expensive actors, along with his hollywood socialite lifestyle. It happening once could just be a coincidence, but burning bridges (kek) twice is already quite the feat for extremely stable and large investors like Konami / Sony.
>>
>>748145127
Can't speak for DS2 because I haven't played it, but for DS1:
It was marketed as being Kojima's first independent game which would be interesting to see what he could come up with unopposed. However initial impressions made the game look a bit pretentious, and dumb memes like "walking simulator" hurt it's marketability really bad. "FedEx Kojima-style" is more apt of course but the damage is done and nobody would give it any respectable attention.
Now as for the game itself, it's honestly really fun for a change of pace, and the story is intriguing when exposed to it for the first time during regular gameplay (not through trailers which would otherwise make it look boring). However the writing suffers from the same issues that the later Metal Gear games had from MGS4 onwards: Too long winded, ending fatigue (event presented like the conclusion but it isn't yet and your emotions stay high for too long that you become apathetic), unnecessarily overcomplicated plotlines, and classic moviegame long-as-fuck cutscenes.

DS2 seems to be more of the same. DS1 was good for a one-off experience, but having the same stuff again with having nothing really that could add-upon
>>
>>748145127
Shitty tacked on sequel no one asked for. I genuinely regret purchasing this game.
>>
>>748148543
You don't know what you're talking about. He used to make much more cinematic games; you'd go through a couple of rooms, watch a 15-minute cutscene, and then do that for the entire game. Starting with MSG5 and both Death Strandings, they made a huge leap in gameplay, giving the player a large choice of tools for interacting with the world and a huge number of objectives, rather than just rushing through a story.
>>
>>748145127
Every plot point you've already seen in mgs and the gameplay is nothingburger.

>>748148896
(pressed Post by accident)
>DS2 seems to be more of the same. DS1 was good for a one-off experience, but having the same stuff again with having nothing really that could add-upon
makes it redundant, and nobody would be interested to experiencing the same shit again, only unless they're really invested into the story and setting, and can tolerate post-MGS4 Kojima's awful writing style.
>>
>>748148768
You have no idea wtf you're talking about
>>
>>748145127
Kojima invented having no cultural impact
>>
The only reason most people dislike Death Strandings as much as MGS is because of the setting and story; the gameplay has nothing to do with it. The setting simply isn't for everyone. I'm 100% sure that if the story and setting were more grounded, everyone would adore these games; they have everything for that, at least more than his previous games.
>>
>>748148745
People can make original dogshit. Ed Wood's movies are good because they're his ideas alone. And Japan Studio actually made good games for a but until GR2 flopped. Kojima didn't even do that. ruining Japan Studio is probably one of Sony's bigggest sins imaginable while dumping Kojima after he wanted to become a Hollywood director and spend massive amounts of money on retarded shit and do everything but make games is only common sense.

Kojima doesn't have that same level of quality attached to his name like it did even a decade ago. There will never be another group of autists making wells in Africa to one-up DSP like the Sons of Kojima ever again, Kojima being a relic of the late 90s, 2000s and early 2010s being one of those reasons.
>>
>>748145641
>Kojima never wanted to make this game, he hates sequels
Absolutely. He's really bad at writing them too, that's why MGS2 was a light "cya suckers!" to fans and MGS3 is filled with all the fanservice slop because his fans became rabid after the previous game. Everything after is garbage because he was forced to make them, not out of his own good will. Sure, they are unique compared to other games and are well made, but that doesn't mean they aren't made out of spite.
>>
>>748148775
Nigger stfu already with this fake narrative of Kojima going over budget, it's not true. MGSV cost around 80 million and that is including with the 5 year development on the FOX engine, stop parroting what some clickbaity faggot journos are saying, it's simply not true.
>>
>>748145127
Because it has zero purpose other than feeding kojimas ego, its a failure as a game, movie, story, nothing new to offer or relevant enough to matter when the industry is shifting towards cheaper productions with more substance or just indies with a clear objective, this trash appeals to no one

>>748149374
The proof is in the pudding. He has had a decade to show that most of those allegations have been false or otherwise the situation would rectify when he has his own studio and new funding to play around with. What we got were two games with middling success, ridiculous spending on celebrity actors (again) and on the technical side he used an engine that wasn't even developed in-house. I never also said that "over budget" meant that Kojima was going over the monetary limits, but he was pushing the time limits several times over. Even if he would have got years more, he still would have delivered a subpar product and his work on Death Stranding and his now jettisoned partnership wit Sony just further keeps proving it. The guys a second rate game director and always has been.

>>748149675
The Sons of Kojima were a bung of DSP a-logs that fucked with him and tried to posture themselves as better than him for a decade. IIRC, they were the ones that started the This Is How You Don't Play trend with Phil where they take his playthroughs and edit all the dead air and shit out and keep in all his deaths and other failures.
Anyways, they once tried to prove that they are better than DSP (something most people are naturally) by funding a well in Africa and sharing pictures with it to everyone saying that they're more generous and kinder than Phil will ever be.
It's kinda funny since the head of SoK turned out to be a massive paranoid schizo that blackmailed all his followers once they got into his club without them knowing. They've since disbanded after one dude's gf died and it was revealed that the head of SoK was doxing her and her cancer diagnosis or something like that. It's been 10 years since this happened

The most important part is that there won't be another group naming themselves after Kojima since he's not even culturally relevant anymore outside of niche gaming circles. Literally the only Metal Gear Solid game that people remember to this day is MGS Revengance, which Kojima had next to no involvement in the final product or even the initial phases of the project.

>>748145127

>>748150109
>also his team had to learn ap brand new engine in less than 3 years
The Decima is brain dead simple and one of the reasons Guerilla's development cycle is solid. They've got some of the best talent on the EU side of the industry and pretty much the only reason Decima isn't used more widely is the cost of licensing (due to being a Sony licensed proprietary engine), just that alone should give you enough clue on how much the initial investment to Death Stranding as a project was. Death Stranding is the only game developed out of Guerilla's portfolio ever since it debuted with Shadowfall back in 2013. If you also look at Death Stranding as a whole, not a whole lot of the development time over the years went into learning the engine, most of it had to do with cutscene direction, mocap and the usual Kojima hijinks of 'getting it right'. The same happened with the sequel, it would have released even earlier if he wouldn't have had a compulsion to rewrite the whole damn thing. You seeing the picture here? The key combining factor here is Kojima, not his circumstances.

Because they took the interesting part of the first game and basically removed it entirely. I played hour 1 and there were so many structures already , I carried around tons of kit half of the game until I realised I never needed it except one ladder once in the entire game. The truck was extremely OP. There's no reason to bother building the roads. The first game was better in all aspects too and the dynamic environment was undercooked. I think thr first game somehow ended up having better maps too
>>
MGSV design philosophy and Death Stranding design philosophy could have been easily flipped on their heads and both games would have been much better off:
>MGSV: Player avatar, emphasis on base management/building and facebook oriented timed gameplay on certain facets.
>Death Stranding: Focused main character, story and character driven narrative, open world oriented.
Funny enough the features got swapped. Death Stranding would have been an excellent player avatar/strand online feature oriented management/building/delivery simulator with minimal story and MGSV could easily have used the meat on Death Stranding's bones to reinforce it's identity as a Metal Gear game. Now both are abortions and i'm still amazed people want more Kojima.

>and i'm still amazed people want more Kojima.
because hate his games or love them kojima is the only one in this goddamn stale as fuck industry who gives you new experiences, he seems to be the only one in the AAA space who isn't afraid of taking risks and we desperately need people like him but unfortunately no one else does it like him, for example, wolverine is literally just spider-man but with claws, they could have done so much more with this character

I'm gonna say it.

Death Stranding has bad art direction which isn't a fit for the plot it's trying to tell. The ugly actors and hard sci fi look when the plot isn't really scientific in the slightest.

Not a fan of death stranding but the "muh cultural impact" is so fucking dumb I hope you never engage with video games every again. Take Kojima with you
>>
>>748145127
It's honestly unbelievable to me that the same person who made MGS2 could make such a derivative sequel. Death Stranding is an excellent game, DS 2 has no reason to exist, it's just Death Stranding the Lost Levels
>>
>>748156614
Its MGS2 to MGS1 but without the technological advances and the "deepest moment in gaming history" ending
>>
Kojima's legacy will always be Metal Gear Solid, particularly of the games where he was kept in check by a good writer and Konami. Death Stranding 1 was an interesting novelty for normies that made them realize he's a fraud so it makes sense DS2 sold like shit.
>>
>>748156679
MGS 2 is a game designed to take your expectations for it being like MGS1 and turning it on its head, constantly baiting you and pulling the rug out mechanically. DS2 is literally just retread DS1 but with way better equipment and way less prescient design. DS1 would make a deal about you lacking a key mechanic that would make the trek far more interesting, DS2 you just pop into your car and drive

They were never interested beyond getting the message and they "got it" with DS1.

>>
Anyway, was it even good? I loved Death Stranding, but I feel like there was some missing factor to tie everything together.
>>
>>748145127
The entire world of DS1 was built to tell one story.
>>
>>748147647
You know, having just finished replaying MGS4 for the first time in over a decade... DS2 has the same plot more or less.
>>
>>748145127
Kojima has lost his marbles. He's been like this for over a decade
He develops empty open worlds to save up costs so he can hang out/hire celebrities. These games have good gameplay, but there is absolutely nothing to do with it. Repetitive mission structure, barely any boss fights, easter eggs, or anything he had been known for previous to MGSV. You need this guy on a leash if you want to have a good game.
Cut it the fuck out with the celebrities
Enough open world shit. You make cinematic games; make linear experiences
More boss fights, more atypical game design
I don't expect OD and physint to be any different. He'll jerk off all of the celebrities he hired, will give it a "TV like" episodic format, will make all of them dance or do wacky stuff at some point, and it'll have a pretentious vibe all around

Walking is incredibly fun but bogged down by no-go zones that slow you down.
Coupled by unironically too small of a map. As beautiful and hand crafted as it is.

I’m a big fan of both games but they’re not without their faults. The story is serviceable and fine. DS1 was way better and more straight forward.

The reason why DS2 didn’t make much of a splash is because it didn’t innovate on anything. Same mid gameplay and story retold. A lot of missed opportunities.
So it’s obvious it would only sell to people who were already invested in ds1, and that’s not a lot of people.

The post game is empty and boring too. I don’t know how you fuck up easy and chill dopamine delivery runs so much. That goes for both games.
>>
>>748145958
Story and plot was a slice of life anime featuring photorealistic moe girls.
Why did nobody notice this?
Also it's about big tech, do you realize what's going on in the silicon valley, these nutjobs have become religious as fuck.
>>
>>748157008
That's because you are fighting too many "totally not-metal gears". As a result it's more similar to MGS than it needs to.
Boss fights are tedious as fuck but I only played on "to the wilder" so they take ages to down. My biggest complain about this game is still how you as a player are treated as a complete retard. After a while I just wanted to skip the dialogue. C'mon Kojimbo you could do better.
>>
>>748157083
I don't think this will give you that missing factor. If you like the first game, this game is just an excuse to do more of it, so I think it's worth playing but I can't imagine it will fill any missing pieces.

It really feels like Kojima just wants to remake Metal Gear Solid, but with his own brand. Similar to how MN9 and Bloodstained were just temu clones of their respective dev's magnum opus'.
>>

>>
>>748157757
Yeah I know he said if you go open world once you can't go back but he's so fucking wrong with that, he must realize people are fucking sick of these empty ass worlds, leave that shit to rockstar.... but what makes me a bit hopeful is in the poster we can clearly see buildings that belong to a city or so which makes me believe it will not be open world because the reason MGSV took place in afghanistan and africa is so he doesn't have to fill the world full with believable NPCs, so seeing that building in the background makes me hopeful it will be more linear
>>
>>748148018
the action is mainly if you go looking for it in Big watcher BT area's, ghost mech areas, boss fight area's which you can choose to go through or not or main missions i like the choice you have

>>748158032
i think it will be open world in a equilibrium deus ex themed/styled city and outskirts either US or Russia not too sure yet but since its cold war themed it could be both could even involve China or Korea and have multiple maps like Death Stranding 2 has with Mexico, Australia and the multiple other area's away from there
>>
>>748158032
Empty Open Worlds is a way to save dev time / costs, not to make a good game. There's a reason why every A-AA game has a giant empty desert world.
>>
>>748157757
Surely OD isnt going to be an open world game though
>>
>>748158637
no but that thats different though, horror typically comes from enclosed spaces, for action you want more space for sandbox experiences with the tools given to you by the game its why he tried with MGS5, but the map design was shit due to being way to open it needs to be open but designed in a way that sneaking is also necessary so that you cant just snipe everyone or use a tranc dart gun
>>
>>748158637
Nah this one absolute not, so this is already a good sign that he isn't dumb enough to make it open world, see he's learning, which gives me hope for Physint also not being open world

>>748158838
If i'm not mistaken i'm pretty sure he wanted to make Silent Hills open world hence the name Hills and not Hill
>>
>>748159019
>If i'm not mistaken i'm pretty sure he wanted to make Silent Hills open world hence the name Hills and not Hill
thats surprising, a first person open world horror game that changes to scare you on purpose hence the cloud taking in data to see what scares people the most, but from the trailer and screenshots are all closes spaces even with the screen shot of the tranny its a hallway with the tranny at the end
>>
Kojima just made Death Stranding again but this time it has even more of an action focus instead of just starting development on Physint immediately after the first game. What a fucking joke. It would be out by now.

I really hated how this game's story was structured exactly like the original. Even down to the final trek from the last distribution center to the very first one.
>>
>>748159273
You can blame sony for that, Kojima hates makings sequels, I'm sure we would have rather done a new project. He has always been like this, just because he made lots of MGS games doesn't mean he wanted to make them in fact he didn't
>>
>>748159605
Death Stranding should have been a one and done thing just like kojima intended to, it had the absolute perfect ending to just stop there but fucking sony saw DS1 was a success so they wanted a second one

Yeah I can't really figure out why Death Stranding 2 exists, other than for Kojima to have an excuse to hang out with all of his b-list friends again. The first game wasn't exactly a sales smash, people certainly weren't crying out for another one, and the game itself isn't the product of great new ideas- it's literally the same game all over again except bigger and ten times easier travel across. In fact the first game arguably worked better due to its smaller scale and the fact that the environment felt harsher. What a massive waste of time and money. No wonder Sony gave him the boot.

Nah DS1 got the balance right- terrain is harsh, journeys are fraught with peril, and the rewards feel earned. DS2 removes so much friction in the pursuit of being more accessible and action-oriented that it loses its unique core gimmick.

>>748156614
Fair take, but at least Lost Levels is balls hard.

I don't understand the missing factor you're looking for so be less vague.
DS2 is soulful, for example you remember the hotsprings and its little tune?
Well for DS2 they commissioned a reprise of the song and the lyrics are changed to reflect each hotspring's in game effect, for the sole reason that it's a fond memory of singing that one song at school.
It's not a cynical corporate product at all.
>>
The shit people post about this game is incomprehensible sometimes.
