The effort I put in trying to make it happen. The money I wasted on books. The time I wasted reading rules and mastering them so that I didn't have to look them up during sessions. It was all a waste. The sad thing is that simply writing or reading is closer to what I dreamed of as a kid than any session every will be. I hate how everything is a joke to people. D&D was Marvel writing before Marvel writing was even a meme. The original game was incredible. But nobody wants to explore a dungeon like it's Etrian Odyssey in 2026. You're just better off replaying Wizardry, reading, or writing and imagining your own shit.

I also want to leave a thought here for some anons. If you're attracted by the tactical nature of some editions of D&D, then consider getting into Battletech. It's a really great set of rules. It's the one game that won't rip you off. The full rules are getting a reprint this month for the first time in forever. It's by far the best of the old tabletop games. The combat and simulation is GOAT. There's also a few video games that are worth playing.

And the world of the game is set around a glowing underground tree. I would prefer if the animal characters featured in the game were themed around animals and creatures that actually lived underground instead of things like a polar bear.
