30+ YEAR OLD DECREPIT GAMERS... WE WON BIGLY
>>

I don't think I ever felt like I was getting stronger when I leveled up in Rebirth. The RPG side of these games is an afterthought. If only they ditched the dogshite side quests as well.

since you can mod a game a enabled/disable any feature, technically every feature is "optional" therefore nobody can criticise any game for any reason, ever.
>>
>>748161118
Why have levels then?
>>
>THE GAME IS PLAYING ITSELF JOHN
>>
Hamaguchi really has to learn how to stop talking. It's like the extreme opposite of Nomura damn near saying nothing about KH4. There's gotta be a middle ground.
>>
>>748162192
Because the original had them they feel like they have to have them, even if they barely matter. The RPG part in thiese Action RPGs fucking sucks.

I'd respect them more if they just made a straight up linear action game, since they're not willing to make the RPG side of things actually matter.
>>
>>748161842
>Gameplay being optional is a good thing actually
You're god damn right, it's why I'll watch it on youtube
>>

The temptation will always be there which makes the experience worse. It should’ve been exclusive to easy mode.

>>748161842
This causes a game to lose its identity and personality. The only thing we'll all have in common while playing the game, ie the only experience we'll share, is the story. Games are simply being boiled down to story, with the gaming part seen as a nuisance by many, and the slope just continues to get slipperier. It's a valid criticism. Worth malding and seething over? Probably not, but valid.
>>
>>748161268
>I don't think I ever felt like I was getting stronger when I leveled up in Rebirth.
That's because the game has like three other progression systems.
>party level
>weapon level
>materia level
Your actual level is basically irrelevant. And now we're throwing in FITS unless everything is unlocked at the start.
>>
>>748161842
When people say shit like this incredibly low-quality opinion that makes life worse for everyone, I can't help but think about that time Axiom Verge 2 came out and allowed you to skip boss battles by walking through the exit door with no negative repercussions. Amusing that 0 people talk about that game despite it being a direct follow-up to a game that people were claiming was the greatest Metroidvania of it's time. But it'll never be discussed as you'll just pretend to not understand in order to make discourse impossible, since the next thing you'll say is
>There were OTHER reasons that game was bad
before coming up with every excuse at how the design philosophy that resulted in skippable bosses was the culprit behind almost all of the poor decisions. Every single time.
>>
>>748162391
The rpg side never mattered. RPG just means padding and shitty gameplay, that's all it ever meant.
>>
>>748162297
There has been 10 trillion interviews about KH4. You just don't know about them because KH4 has been in development for 100 years while FF is getting made every year

Yea because Rebirth forced you to engage with the side stuff, otherwise you'd be underleveled for everything.
Which means Revelations is going to be padded to fuck as well.

>>748162894
These "accessibility options" had a different name back in the 90s and 2000s and they were called cheat codes/hacks. They had a negative stigma for a reason.
The fact that they now come packed with the game as some sort of hugbox ad is really telling of how far we've fallen. You wouldn't just let someone who's last place in a board game suddenly jump next to first place just because you feel bad for them. If people lose the ability to build character, they WILL fail in life.
>>
>>748161842
Being optional doesn't mean it doesn't affect the design philosophy of the game for the worse. Since it will now take into account if all side content is optional and mostly pointless. Why bother putting effort into cool shit or meaningful lore in that content when people will just skip it.

Every game you've ever played now has a button to make you invincible, lets you level skip, increase your levels and stats, give you infinite money etc.

Don't you see how you just ruined every game experience you ever had, because you removed all friction and challenge and reason to play the games?
It is not "optional", it is a design choice that ultimately removes the reason to play the game in the first place.

There is no cheat code to learning a skill in the real world, that's why people who commit, grow to appreciate things more than just surface level. A plebeian heathen like you can never know the beauty of single-mindedly focusing on something you're passionate about, and this includes video games. Cheat and skip all the gameplay you can, you'll always be a secondary.

How is a super soldier, Cloud, going to use his super strength to launch bullets at you harder?
In Final Fantasy 7, Shinra R&D literally tries to pit machine gun-wielding troopers and mechs against SOLDIERs and they lose everytime.

The entire point is that giving a super soldier a massive sword is more effective in this universe than any tank or gun they can design.
They would gladly stop having to rely on psychotic mako poisoned super soldiers if they could, but they can't figure out how to top them so they keep a small few SOLDIERs ready to go.
>>

In rebirth between doing the main stuff, some card game shit until I got bored, and finding summon shrines because that's the only way to fully unlock a summon, I was fully leveled up even for dynamic difficulty.

So, what's the point of levels then? And why grind when you can just set your level to the "recommended"?

>So, what's the point of levels then?
it determines the basic growth of each character
>And why grind when you can just set your level to the "recommended"?
You dont just grind levels, you grind AP, you grind materials, you grind in other ways to get new materia, new weapons, accesories or armor.
This isnt some shitty PS1 rpg like lunar where the levels is the only progression the game has

The problem is it basically turns playing the game properly into nothing more than a self-imposed challenge. It's like doing a Nuzlocke in Pokemon. There's nothing to stop you from simply ignoring the fact your Pokemon died and just healing them and re-using them anyway, the challenge only exists because you are actively forcing yourself to partake in it and roleplay it.

It's the same in this case. There's nothing to stop you just grabbing free levels at every opportunity by abusing the "skip to recommended level" feature every time its available. So, levelling properly by doing side-quests and grinding etc is now just a self-imposed roleplay challenge where you must actively pretend like the option for free levels simply doesn't exist.

I wonder how far this push for "optional accessibility options" is going to go. Are we eventually going to have RPGs where you can just insta-revive your character after dying in battle, and people will justify it by saying "You don't HAVE to use the option. You can just manually restart the battle or load a save if you want to keep the challenge." ?

While I agree with most of your points, I will not stand for Lunar slander. They were a great duo of games, and there was never a 3rd game and I will call you liar if you say there was.

In the past games would at least call you a cheater for doing things like this.

>I will not stand for Lunar slander
yeah well, i liked lunar 1 and 2. Specially 2.
I will, however, not accept lunar 1 forced grinding sections.

>you are so strong that you virtually can't die, and if you take damage you'll heal it all back because the enemies can't dent you health enough
That's not what this feature does.

Y'know what? That's fair.

sweet, hope there will be achievements for using this feature, because that is what a gamer with a life will do

Unironically a good thing.
The side content of Shitbirth was absolutely atrocious and to this day I wish I'd have just skipped it with cheat tables.
My advice for Shitbirth is too just put that garbage on ready so you can just run through the story.
Seems like the same will be true for Fagelation, so good thinking on SEs part ti just implement the cheats now.

Couldn't you just "level up" from pushing the story, then do the side stuff you passed earlier at a big level boost?
Or is this simply a final dungeon thing?

Easy mode has been a thing these games since 7R part 1. Never seen this self-imposed challenge cope till now.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt because remake and rebirth are pretty well balanced when it comes to grinding and progression. Those who come from remake/rebirth know that levels arent that important so this is a nothing burguer.
However, i do wonder why is this a thing when easy is a thing. This is too much handholding for faggots. I guess this is a way to shut down sebbywebz and steam tards that complain the side content is forced?

>Like if i max out thunder, ice, and stone. I get a new materia thats stronger that i can also max
>that's stronger
No. You just get another materia that's actually weaker, because it starts at level 1.

That's a cool feature for dad gamers out there.
As a dad, I no longer have as much time for video games as I used to
Have I mentioned that I'm a dad?

So whats stopping you from just going max level and oneshotting everything?
>>
>>748172598
its not free levels, it is updating your levels to the recommended one for the place you are gonna be in, cutting grinding but also not giving you AP or gil

While I prefer a good story in RPGs over the gameplay I agree that the medium is "video game" which means there needs to be an interactive component.

But the problem is these games are very linear, all JRPGs are. There is no challenge, there is nothing you gain by grinding, you don't increase your skill at opening your menus and clicking on magic>fira after a certain point. Which means the gameplay is just a meaningless time sink that has no impact on how the story flows, it merely checks to see if you're awake and have nothing better going on in your life as a time gate to the linear story moving forward.

The solution isn't to remove the grind necessarily, the solution is to improve how jrpgs are constructed so the interactive element means something but this is beyond even japanese devs apparently.
