Why do Mario games have a time limit? Is there a canonical explanation?
vestigial mechanic from the arcade. they're so generous they may as well not exist
>>748197081The toads are bricks and if you don't reach the flagpole they all suffocateGrok will confirm me
>>748197081Its how long you have until bowser drops a fat load in peach and then passes her off to his troops as a pleasure toy.
Mario has to take a shit
>>748197081it's a safety precaution. untimed mario can build up speed for days and traverse parallel universes
>>748197081It's a great failsafe for softlocks while appealing to score / speed fags.
>>748197171Funky is designed around time limits. Also>Didn't play SM3DWThey removed it in SMWonder however.
>>748197081He needs those toads for his addiction, else he'll die.
>>748197081starvation

mario shits his pants if he can't get to the rest house at the end of a level in time and dies from embarrassment
I think this is why I liked Super Mario 64 and the following 3D Marios. There wasn't any timer to worry about.I used to think there was a timer because it represented the passage of time, like if you took too long you'd miss your opportunity to complete your rescue, but adult me knows that it's just vestigial along with the lives system from the arcades.
>>748197081That's just counting down the time you have left to clear a stage before Mario's heart explodes.
>>748197081Super Mario Bros. Wonder feels wrong without the timer.
>>748200782That's because a lot of the levels are more about exploring or engaging with the mechanics outside of some specific challenges. I think a future 2D(or even 3D) Mario would benefit from going the opposite direction into more Galaxy/3D World-style "Fuck you faggot complete the level" high density and tension.
>>748197081Why do they always count down really fast? I don’t mean the levels have short time limits, I mean the actual speed of the count down is like 3 ticks a second.
Isn't it obvious? He has to save Princess Toadstool in a timely manner otherwise Bowser will
Mario is chasing Peach and Bowser. The timer represents how long Mario has before he can't catch them anymore.
>>748200947What's the difference if Bowser saves her?
>>748200958>>748200947But why? What happens lorewise if the time runs out? Bowser will what if they can't catch him anymore?
>>748200851Because of how the console did calculations it couldn't actually measure a second precisely so it's why timers are so bizarrely fast compared to a more accurate modern console. This is also the quirk behind European versions of games running slightly slower than American/Japanese versions on older consoles.
>>748201040someone will get to use her holes for free which is the worst thing that can happen to a woman
>>748200851Design choice to make it seem like you have more time than you actually do. Arcade games were designed to look easier than they actually are.
