What is Todd glorious justification for explaining that colonising the stars is a piece of cake but keeping the perfect planet in good conditions is impossible?

I mean the second half is very believable. Where i have trouble given current evidence is believing those who have both the means and desire to expand spaceward would ever be competent enough to do so successfully or at least convince competent enough people to do it for them

Building 7 effect, don't question it
>>
>>748230739
As I recall, it was a hamfisted global warming analogy where the jump drive technology was destroying the earth because...just because okay! They updated the firmware after it was too late so it doesn't effect other planets but conveniently it ruined earth so they don't have to actually model the planet and multiple cities. These old landmarks were rebuilt after earth fell apart for some dumb reason I can't remember. That's the excuse for why they look so out of place.

in starfield they are sort of connected. they make a new spaceship engine that manipulates gravity to allow FTL travel, but testing the early grav drives in orbit around the moon fucked up earth's magnetosphere or some shit and basically gave the planet a 50 year timeline until death. humanity then spent those 50 years scrambling to build ships and stockpile supplies to colonize the stars
>>
>>748231849
Also the guy who discovered the technology knew that it could cause that but considered it worth the risk. He was the right by the way.
>>
>>748229647
I can't imagine what possible thought process led to just slapping down a mildly dilapidated building in the middle of a totally empty featureless desert and thinking that'd be a cool post-apocalyptic earth. this is literally the same fucking studio that made fallout 3.

Early prototype FTL drives disrupted earth's gravitational field and stripped its atmosphere away.
I'm not sure what anons are even expecting to portray this other than a desert though, do they think all of earth's cities should be fully modeled for what's essentially cosmetic?

so somehow all the buildings just magically got destroyed with no remnants, turned into dust, but the empire state building is basically unscathed with just a few small parts damaged for some reason

>>
not tryna to hijack threads here but i dont think you guys get whats happening behind the scenes
all of the gatekeeping by corps and Todd (literally what his games are about) are falling apart because for 200/month one guy can build a game engine from scatch
take 5-10 of those guys and put them in room and you can build a game (like wardogs or anything else that all of you are playing today)

literally even game/movie studio/company is using AI and this Starshit and Jeet Theft Auto stuff will be the last 'round' of bad game design because the cost to write amazing code is zero

but put some talent and artists and actual game designers together without the need for a huge apparatus to just get some polygons on screen will only make the quality of the product go up over time

bear through the slop now beacuse on the other side of the slop waterfall is fucking treasure

I still wanna know why Bethesda couldn't just make a procedurally generated city enviornment like this to add to a few planets, and maybe turn Earth into an ecumenopolis. Or alternatively, make a ruined city world full of all the various abandoned buildings we normally run into.

In fact that sounds like it would've made way more sense than every planet in the galaxy being inexplicably full of random buildings and scattered structures that aren't attached to anything.

Between the 7 layers of middle management, the level designer, the concept artists, the 10 3d modelers, the animators, the rigging designer, the audio designer, the diversity commissar, the 10 different consultants, the assigned HR officer, the team lead, every single of the layers lead, the scrum master, the technical advisor, the tech lead, etc.
I might be missing some bullshit roles, but that might be around the average composition of every American big tech team.
>>
>>748233714
I genuinely don't mind these small towns in Skyrim. They just didn't make sense in Starfield. Like this one city has skyscrapers and a subway system for a grand total of 100 NPCs. But the procedurally generated content is what really made it suck.
>>
>>748236225
>stupid hippos

>>
>>748239410
That's just it. A small unimpressive city would make sense. What doesn't make sense is a dense urban city block surrounded by empty plains. It's like if you removed every building from las Vegas except the strip casinos. And then put in a subway line between the MGM grant and the Bellagio.

Normally this is where art direction should take over and say stop. But if you have worked in these corporate gigs you know they don't encourage tension. So me bringing up this inconsistency would not result in a thought provoking exchange of ideas but an HR meeting about my hostility in the workplace.

desu there was no real way to put Earth, even a ruined Earth into a game where you can land anywhere. But I don't get why they even let the player land on it. They should have just made some excuse for why it's impossible to land on. If they had to, they could let you dock at a station where you could space-elevator down on foot into a contained cell with a cool backdrop. If it was an unlivable hellhole it might have made for a cool endgame area.
The lame ass infinite desert is just meme material

why the fuck would a single building survive earth's magnetosphere getting vaporized while all the surrounding buildings get pulped into sand?
If the rest of the ruins are just covered by tons of sand then why the fuck is the entrance to the building at ground level and not covered as well? Why would any of that happen in just 300 years?

Why do they simply not think at bethesda?
>>
>>748258290
nta but i'd take a procgen city in starfield paired with bethesda's radiant quest systems. something like night city but with a shitload of different radiant quests sending you all over. not every city has to be like that, but exploring it would be a nice change of pace. like the coruscant of starfield

what's the lore behind earth's destruction again? why is a desert and why are there a few surviving monuments? that part makes no fucking sense
and I believe they handled the "mystery behind earth" like total shit, I wish they did it so differently, there's a game called technomancer where it's believed that Earth will one day save the colony on Mars, despite Earth not making contact with them, it gets revealed in the end that Earth has been completely destroyed, it is now a small asteroid field if you couldn't explore earth except see some shitty "Life After People" esque monuments, they should have done that and destroyed the Earth outright
>>

>the maps are uhhhh not procgen because they uhhhhh were genned in development and you can go to the same rock asset in the middle of the desert in anyone's game

It's amazing how nothing in Starfield looks any more impressive than what Skyrim modders could have done given enough time and resources. Just a stunningly unambitious game in every way.

If the entire planet was a desert all of those buildings should have eroded or you would have massive ruins everywhere. Not just random landmarks standing out everywhere. God Todd Howard sucks.
>>
>>748242060
Sure but that wouldn't leave just *one* building. The Empire State Building isn't constructed from some magic super material unknown to the rest of New York. If they were going to be this lazy they should have just had the entire thing be gone.

If it was powerful enough to destabilize earth's magnetosphere then the moon would've been devastated because they testing the fucking thing in lunar orbit. But the dumbass writer didn't even mention the earth's core, just magnetosphere, so who knows what was going on.
>>
>>748265628
and then they said that modders will port every other bethesda game into sf, so you'd have a morrowind planet where you could just play morrowind with guns, and a fallout 4 planet, and a skyrim planet, etc.
They were, uh, a little bit off in their projections.
>>
What's also funny about saarfield is the idea that people would just completely abandon Earth when they settled on places like mars where humans still can't walk on the surface without a suit. Like nobody is trying to re-terraform earth or construct an artificial magnetosphere or even exploit all the existing mineral wealth that Earth has because everyone thinks it's in poor taste or something.

Also a very funny sign that even in the run-up to the game, everyone was already expecting that it would be so flawed that we'd need to rely on fans working for free to fix it.

this is why i was so saddened by how bad the engine/generation and planetary travel/exploration system was handled in starfield. It had the potential to be a gold mine. Generic sci-fi setting with no real established lore or races. Could have been a pure modders paradise. Could have made it whatever the hell you wanted it to be without worrying about lore accuracy or whatever else. Turn it into whatever setting you want it to be.

Unfortunately the game was so fucking bland and poorly made that even the modders were like, yea its not worth the time to do anything with it. Its a bethesda game i often actually forget exists.

I mean, do you really believe that shit was made by a single person?
Probably there were a dozen 3d designers there, each making an asset that's shown there, probably there were 5 or 6 people involved in making the tower.
Basically they distribute each asset into one person each, the big ones probably have several people making them in steps, this is basically so you don't get burnt doing a single thing for too much time, plus it takes less time, also they can just make one person then assemble everything into one map or model.
>>
This is great level design at work. One of the best planets to visit and when you get there youre welcomed by an amazing breath taking assault on the senses, this is earth? What happened? When? Why? For the curious mind its thrilling seeing our home planet displayed in such manner. It leaves a mark in ones mind, a memory if you will, that will stay with the player for the rest of their life.
>>
>>748231236
nah I dont think it makes sense any way you try to frame it because its a basic reasoning issue. If they can colonize and expand outward then the logical thing that will happen is everything that went wrong on Earth will strike them twice as hard with no base to draw resources from. So even if it hypothetically works out well initially, the long term issues of Earth will be repeated over time. And that is assuming that the breakaway geniuses are actually brilliant and not fart sniffing pompous retards. So some other anons pointed out in the lore the scifi tech destroyed earth, the same tech that makes expansion possible. So when the new worlds they are living on start fucking up and they try expanding again.... it will become a cycle.
>>
At least the in-game explanation for why the NASA facility was still there was because a Relic was under it and was emitting a MAGICAL FORCE FIELD that somehow kept the place standing
any other building still standing was just Emil said "wouldn't it be cool if Fallout reference?"
