People will say this but in every workplace where "vibe coding" is acceptable there is literally no oversight of what the AI puts out. It's given a brief once over, accepted, and shipped.

People will bang on and on about "responsible AI use" but in practice all AI use ends up being irresponsible.
>>
>>748253025
>Vibe coding is bad because....
because you're using an extremely subjective language (human language) to program something that is entirely objective (software).
If you read very old books on logic and mathematics, you’ll see just how problematic it is to use human language to discuss the exact sciences. You need 10 times as many words to explain something, and even then the explanation isn't very good. With the appropriate language, you not only convey information in a completely objective way, but you also make operations easier.
But of course, if you're just an amateur or hobbyist, there's really no problem with programming in human language and letting an LLM try to turn that into a computer program. You're not building anything serious, like that fat asshole who made Minecraft and has zero talent (Minecraft was his lucky break, and now even if he spends the next 50 years making games, he’ll never release anything worthwhile again).

That's exactly what my friends in the field say is happening. Companies are basically using AI as an excuse to make human workers increase their productivity three or four times over, without caring much about the consequences. If workers don’t use a minimum number of tokens (that is, if they don't irresponsibly delegate everything to AI), they're penalized in their performance reviews.
It’s pure chaos.
Celebrity CEOs hyping up AI have sparked an insane frenzy among corporations, and they're diving headfirst without any care. In the future, people will write books about this episode of human madness.

Forget about vibe coding which is now an established industry standard with an entire stack of Claude code/codex/cursor etc.
GPT 6 astra is now good enough to make game ready assets. You might still need to do your own work in substance painter for textures but 3D modeling below a certain complexity is solved by AI. This is a real game changer. Of course, if you need some more heavy duty stuff like creating accurate humans, headshot 3 is an incredible AI powered tool. It needs precise portraits, but you can generate them from any photo with gemini nano banana pro.

"Vibe coding" should never be a thing. You should take a minute and check your work cause AI doesn't understand anything that.it's doing. You don't learn anything from just prompting.
>>
>>748253712
>there is literally no oversight of what the AI puts out
I've seen this. Aside from the guardrails they feed our LLMs, no one questions much, and a lot of boomers and "business" professionals (contract officers, accountants, etc.) will blatantly copy/paste whatever the AI generates. It's pretty easy to spot if you have any experience with the systems, yourself. Worse, there are very few people who are trained in the basics of prompting, so there's a serious lack of quality happening.

That being said, I've appreciated how useful LLMs can be for learning new systems, coding basic applications, performing grammar reviews, and being a second set of eyes when I don't have a person to rely on. I've been using one to help me develop an Access database faster than I would on my own, and it's pretty easy to verify the code during each revision.

Vibe coding will erase worldwide human proficiency in coding, things will be horribly optimized and pratically no one will know the specifics of how code works.

AI might send us into a state where the technology we use will be a complete mystery to us within a few generations.
>>
>>748257587
Being a SWE has always been about being a middleman between PMs, TPMs, managers, VPs and the machine anyway. They are just doc writers who "gather requirements" and host "design reviews" (which are just bike shedding). Some of them write lots of code because they enjoy it, some of them don't. That and you do oncall (SRE work) which AI can help with but an escalation chain always needs humans.
>>
>>748253025
Because it's faster to just code it yourself. All you need are a few shortcuts to set up big syntactic blocks (loops etc) that are a pain to type out. Code autocomplete has been a thing forever. Vibe coding means you spend all your time wrestling with the AI and trying to get it to do it right instead of just doing it right the first time on your own. It doesn't increase productivity because you spend 30 minutes getting the AI to spit out something that would have taken 5 minutes to type out on your own.

Vibe coding is only useful for companies that didn't know how to code in the first place, because it lets them put out the illusion of a finished product (whereas before they would have had the artists make a fake mockup or something to scam investors). It's VERY useful for them, but it's not useful for anyone who actually knows what they're doing. I honestly don't know where the meme came from that experienced coders find it useful, nobody I know thinks vibe coding is faster. It smells like marketing talk, like they're trying to appeal to authority - the best coders in the world do it, so it must be okay! But they don't do it, so I guess it's not okay.

I remember when AI art was just a novelty that could only create incoherent abstract messes.

Remember GenBreeder back in 2018? Who could have guessed that 8 years later AI would be overtaking the creative process in so many fields.

I remember when Vinny was messing around with it on stream, got this pic and used it for an album cover.

All programming is just making tradeoffs, the issue is non-programmers don't know what tradeoffs to make for their use case, neither does the AI because the choice isn't always objective. This will never be fixed either because the issue is you not expressing what you want and the AI not knowing what you don't know you want.
If you write a robust spec of how you want the project laid out (all the state lives here, enemies are represented by data objects only all logic is computed in one loop here etc.) Then it doesn't matter if it's AI or a junior following your instructions it will all fall into place as you intend.

When vibe coders are impressed by their lottery, it's often because the LLM plagiarized a whole repo, it's not like the LLM can think, it can only copy, so that depends on the quality of the stolen github repo, and guess what, with time, if they replace coders with LLM, all the repos will be made by LLMs then stolen by other LLMs, which will increase the LLM hallucinations, it will insert more and more errors and then no one will be formed to be a coder and it will crash, great plan, I'm not the only one who knows this, they know too, but it's a scam anyway so why bother.

I'm no AI evangelist but that is not how they work, they don't copy paste repos, they're a word predictor that has seen every repo on the planet.
They know how to make a method that does distance between points or whatever because they've seen a million people do it and can output the average of all of them (+ random)

i don't care. Video game developers don't care. It works for me, YOU probably can't even code something like Claude.

People care about AI art cause it looks like trash. People don't care about AI being used in video games for the past 5 years cause they don't know about it.

NTA but this is a bad example because compilers are largely deterministic and must match code documentation while natural language has none of that. The best argument in favor of AI code is it works surprisingly well, but it can still have mistakes and struggles to meet technical requirements and SLAs, that's it.

Another way to put it is that to turn prompts into code that is feature complete (but not even bug free) you aren't prompting anymore, you're a manager, PM and a tech writer, and that's 3 full time jobs.

>>748261989

You don't get it and might not ever.
say you want a game where you move enemies around, astra selects a pathfinding algo and makes it work, you neglect to tell it you Intend for there to be 10k enemies moving around, this won't work with that algo and will require flow fields and a grid and stuff but you've spent $8k vibe coding to this point and everything's built on the assumption of 10 enemies.

This is just 1 choice in 1 game, there's thousands of choices like this of varying importance, it's because you know what you want and unless you write a novel of docs the AI doesn't.

Saying "I don't care" is accurate, I believe you, were both project managers for an AI but you have no attention for detai, l this would have been true without the AI.

And also QA, test engineer, security engineer and SRE. And most FAANG SWEs already cover a large amount of these responsibilities themselves, e.g. every Amazon engineer is also an SRE for their own team, and every team everywhere manages their own testing & infra.
This is why jobs aren't disappearing yet.

High level languages have unambiguous semantics which are preserved in the mapping to machine code. Also "binary" isn't really the right term, different ISAs all use binary but are completely different languages. The correct term is machine code

only program i've ever worked on is the project i'm doing right now, and it's honestly only because GPT is built into visual studio now. half of the features are already finished. i didn't write a single fucking thing. it debugs itself.

i am too stupid for programming. the entire project exploded once already because of my lack of experience and i started it over from scratch, and somehow now it's even better. was only giving me anxiety before i started telling it to back itself up.

it does like to convolute itself into rabbit holes of nested bullshit. do i really think it takes 1000 lines of code to do what i'm doing, probably not, but it works so i don't give a fuck.

the biggest problem with AI code is that the AI cant understand the "why" for certain practices and when you should do things.
for example, code re-use.
suppose you have a block of code thats the exact same in a multitude of different scripts, and if one of these blocks changes they'll all need to.
to cut down on the amount of crap that needs to be loaded and make future editing easier, any competent developer that notices this will merge them all into one globally accessible function that the respective scripts call instead.
the AI will not see the potential optimization unless it makes that code block into a distinct global function in the first place (not happening), it'll simply make a new code block every time (and there's a risk that it doesnt replicate the math perfectly either, leading to problems)
by the time you, the programmer, catch it this code block will be used over two dozen times, each one will be slightly different, and half the scripts will be reliant on this code block existing so you're going to need to edit those as well to fix it.
everything the AI does is like this. you project will be a mess, best case is that this doesnt impact performance for the end user but the likely case is that your game will run worse than a AAA
