it’s better than the chinese nu-zelda. the remake looks like a 2010s “Nintendo hire this man!!!” HD compilation. Shits killing their franchise worse than botw ever could have

>>

How the fuck is "OoT the problem" when it's just 3D ALttP and they've even gone on record describing the "ALttP formula" and Twilight Princess as the culmination of that? Or are you one of those "THAT GOOD GAME THAT HAD WORSE GAMES COME AFTERWARDS? THAT MEANS THE GOOD GAME IS ACTUALLY BAD," retards.

>>
>>748271829
I will never understand retards who claim Zelda's formula was getting stale when Nintendo regressed the formula with each sequel by making the games even easier, more linear, and padded with cuts enes. Nintendo is afraid of just taking a formula and making it better for a lot of their franchises because they could have gone ahead and improved things like combat and dungeon design for their sequels but they just slap some gimmick on instead and call it a day.

>>
>People seething over Skyward.

That game actually served its purpose. It's an important pillar of the saga by being the genesis of the series chronologically through clever explaining of the origins of the triforce. What did botw or totk add to the lore of importance?
>>
>>748272614
If its so important that its the FOUNDATION for all else on the "timeline" then it shouldn't have been treated as a throwaway game made just to show off motion plus. Nintendo clearly decided it was an important game, and all the rest of this mess, retroactively

Don't get me wrong, BotW is dogshit, but in my opinion TP cemented the idea that the series could make no effort to advance the mechanics of the genre/medium and at the same time have a completely nonsensical, borderline incoherent narrative along with a cast of mostly unlikable/forgettable characters and it still be considered above-average.
I mean really, 8.6? This shit is a 5/10 by '06 standards. Definitely the first instance of the "Nintendo Bonus" at least in regards to this IP.
>>
>>748258781
The series was destroyed first by putting Aonuma in charge of it, then by using Link's crossbow training to flush out anyone who gained experience under Aonuma so that they team could be handed off to Fujibayashi who is more of a manager of competent teams than he is someone who can tardwrangle a team that has no veterans with initiative and skill.

Competent developers working under him. He's clearly got some good ideas, but he can't take initiative and supply all the ideas 100% of the time.
There's a reason that the new games made under him fall back so heavily on a handful of tropes and special minigame bullshit logic infecting everything (Scrapper for instance), and it's that he's working with the aftermath of the Zelda team being told that their ideas don't matter and that they would be better off making simple minigame collections.
>>748275941
Yes.
Just look at the world design of SS, it has more in common with a Mario 64 or Sunshine style game where you revisit areas to get different stars than it does with a Zelda game. The game also deemphasized dungeon items heavily. It pays lip service to the formula, but it's not following it.

Doesn't matter if it's 8.8 tier, just make another one, doesn't matter if it's not worth a full game, just release it for 20 bucks. If Nintendo had kept the Majora's Mask release schedule, we'd have 20 or more Zelda titles instead of four and a half (it's Wind Waker, not Tears of the Kingdom, expectations subverted) overbudget games that are divisive anyway.

This. Especially the part about treating the main areas of the games acting like sandboxes with padded content (Silent Realm missions, Eldin Volcano Stealth Section, Tadtone Hide & Seek, all of the Forbidden One refights). They really stretched the assets pool and environments as thin as they could get away with (particularly the final dungeon to collect the Triforce Pieces being a copypasta of previous areas tossed in a salad bowl). The Sandship and Ancient Cistern were the only fleshed out and distinct dungeons and even then latter only for the underground section.

>>748277501
>How would (You) have followed up Skyward Sword?
Expanded on it's motion controls and just added more variety in items and areas.
They could have made a MM/BotW sequel where you are settling New Hyrule and using the Loftwings to travel across the Surface and added to their flight/aerial combat mechanics.
>>
>>748278030
>Worse UI
How is it worse? It still has the radial menu for items, and while it's otherwise fairly bland, so is TP's.
>More rigid sword and item play, can't even swing while moving.
While not being able to swing while moving is a downgrade, it's also not very major. TP had a lot of extra moves but they don't really have much utility, while Skyward Sword is designed from the ground up around directional sword swings.
>Feels more linear, because you are just sent to do an endless succession of "and then" filler
How is that any different than TP? There were tons of filler quests between dungeons in that game. Skyward Sword just iterated on what TP established. Isn't that what a sequel would do?
>Flight gimmick has no impact on the game
At least there were little courses to fly through and minor points of interest between islands, while there was essentially nothing to do with Epona other than go from point A to point B while ignoring the same respawning enemies.
>Instead of coming up with a story reason to do shit, the game just relies on the minigame logic that should be kept to the game's actual minigames
TP forces a ton of minigames onto the player as well, like forcing you to do the Lake Hylia river rafting, Goron sumo wrestling, goat herding, etc. How is this any different than what SS does, other than SS doubling down on it, which is what a sequel would do?
>>

>>748278698

>>
>>748278430
>How is it worse? It still has the radial menu for items, and while it's otherwise fairly bland, so is TP's.
Even when you disable the Wiimote overlay, the game still dumps UI on the side of the screen in a bar. It doesn't have hotkeys anymore, even when the d-pad is mostly available. The radial menu is also less snappy, since it uses gyro and not the analog stick, which is certainly a choice.
>While not being able to swing while moving is a downgrade, it's also not very major. TP had a lot of extra moves but they don't really have much utility, while Skyward Sword is designed from the ground up around directional sword swings.
Wind Waker also had a combo system that wasn't necessary, having extra flourishes that aren't strictly necessary is just game design. The directional sword swings are purely functional and also completely interchangeable when not using them for Simon-Says.
>At least there were little courses to fly through and minor points of interest between islands, while there was essentially nothing to do with Epona other than go from point A to point B while ignoring the same respawning enemies.
You can't dismount the Loftwing anywhere (Skyloft will always have loading zone), you can't fly when you set Skyloft to night mode, you can't use items while on the Loftwing or really do anything against the enemies you ignore that isn't boosting into them, The Loftwing is even more limited than Epona was.
>TP forces a ton of minigames onto the player as well, like forcing you to do the Lake Hylia river rafting, Goron sumo wrestling, goat herding, etc. How is this any different than what SS does, other than SS doubling down on it, which is what a sequel would do?
TP comes up with a reason to do these things that feels coherent while turning them into a game, SS does not put in the effort to make the reasoning feel coherent. You descend from the Sky with your robot and your robot decides to land at the bottom of the mountain.
>>
It's a good game desu, but it ruined Nintendo's mindset when making new entries. Now every new game in their top series has to have le open world. Metroid? Open world. Mario Kart? Open world. Fuxking Kirby? Open world. Zelda and Pokemon were the only series that made sense to give the open world treatment and Zelda was the only one to do it competently.
If the next Mario is true open world (Odyssey doesn't count), I'm ripping my pubes off.
>>
>>748278929
>the game still dumps UI on the side of the screen in a bar
Twilight Princess also had an item HUD in the shape of the controller being used. It's laid out in a vertical bar because the Wiimote is held vertically when playing. Twilight Princess's Wii version does the same thing.
>It doesn't have hotkeys anymore, even when the d-pad is mostly available
I agree that this is a downgrade.
>The radial menu is also less snappy, since it uses gyro and not the analog stick
Doesn't the snappiness of gyro compared to analog boil down to how accurate you are with pointing? While selecting with the analog stick may technically be faster, any difference in actual time taken seems marginal.
>having extra flourishes that aren't strictly necessary is just game design
How is having elements in the game that the game fails to capitalize on/utilize in its design "just game design"? Isn't having a bunch of extra moves without any utility exposing a lack of design around those moves?
>The directional sword swings are purely functional
Moves having function within the game's design is a positive thing.
>and also completely interchangeable when not using them for Simon-Says
In terms of damage output, sure, but the same can be said of most moves in TP (though a lot of them are also contextual and you can't use them at will anyway).
>The Loftwing is even more limited than Epona was.
While you may be able to do less things while on the Loftwing, this is the same kind of argument as the above. Even though you can do lots of things on Epona, most of them have very little actual utility outside of the sword and the bow. In terms of functional gameplay, you usually just run over enemies in the road, just liek you boost into them on the Loftwing. The flying segments have more things to do while you're on the way to the destination though with small navigational challenges, while in TP you're going straight across empty terrain.

I'd argue that the relative loss of Japanese soft power in favour of China is because BotW had so little brand power behind it. It doesn't feel like a Zelda game. It feels like a tech demo for a different game series. It left a gap that Genshin could abuse by basically taking their completed design and slotting in their own IP. If there had been more Zelda DNA in the game, Genshin could never have stolen it, and China as a whole would probably still not be a major player.
>>
>>748280135
Genshin was successful because of its business model, the fact that it wasn't tied to specific hardware, and preying upon gooners. It being a BotW clone is only incidental.

>How is having elements in the game that the game fails to capitalize on/utilize in its design "just game design"? Isn't having a bunch of extra moves without any utility exposing a lack of design around those moves?
Adding some more variety gives more room for player expression and play, which also gives the developer opportunities to reward the player for doing things with minor immaterial rewards, allowing them to encourage experimentation and guide the player towards having fun. If there is no room for expression and everything has a defined gameplay purpose, then the only avenue to get the player to do anything is to define a strict call-response that the player has to follow, and that's not really game design it's just rote learning or a Skinner box at best.
It's like how Mario's triple jump isn't strictly necessary, but it also just feels weird and wrong when the 3D world games decided to just have a 1-2 bounce.

I agree with this to an extent. It does feel cool to do the finishing sword sheethe move, or backflip off Epona, even though there's no utility in doing so, and I do think those add to the game. I just think regarding the swordplay specifically, one of TP's major issues is that its combat encounters fail to properly capitalize on all the new moves that it gives you. It has one of the most expansive movesets for Link in the series, but once the novelty factor wears off, there's no reason to use most of the moves. It feels like the enemy design doesn't properly mesh with Link's abilities. SS's simon-says-like segments aren't ideal either, but it also doesn't have the same issues where your moveset feels underutilized and inconsequential.
