Well from a logistics standpoint it made sense. 343i were formerly Microsoft Game Studios a support studio to Bungie. And MGS contributed to Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST, and Halo Reach. At the time I guess Microsoft's plan was to put as many experienced former Bungie or Halo game developers in managerial positions at MGS which would become 343industries, but it just didn't pan out that way since they definitely didn't have the personel to fill all the empty seats.
I think that's why there was such a obvious disconnect between 343industries and Halo fans because what 343 wanted Halo to be was completely and fundementally different from what Halo fans were expecting the next Halo game to be, and it's funny how this all happened during that era when there was a huge influx of people entering the gaming industry (early 2010s millennial trends and stuff started here). And it just culminated in a massive shit-show.

The flaws of Reach were real but they were so fucking minor and easy to fix in hindsight. Especially compared to
>the fundamentally garbage design of basically every 343i Halo
and
>the game's particular strong points
The three big ones being the perfect progression/customization, the beautifully haunting and tragic narrative, andthe fantastic improvements they made to forge/firefight. I would even argue the score has some of Marty/Salvatore's absolute best work.
Just rebalance the Covenant health/AI/elite melee behavior on legendary and stop spamming concussion rifles, remove loadouts and sprint/armor lock as armor abilities, fix DMR bloom, give us a battle rifle, and then retune the map sizes accordingly, and you have the true pinnacle of what Bungie Halo can be.
I know jack shit about Sledgehammer, can anyone here redpill me on why they will either save Halo or fuck it up just as bad as 343i?

>>748266546
Just about every single aspect of Reach is flawed in some way, and you'd need to practically rebuild the game to fix it. The poor balance, the shit maps, how bad the vehicles became, and ESPECIALLY how much the COD progression system completely fucked up every Halo game from that point onward.
Reach just sucks.
>>
>>748261331
>Why didn't MS give Halo to the Doom guys is beyond me, they seem competent.
Because they consider Doom another Xbox "pillar," and want the Doom guys to continue making Doom. Activation has enough teams working on CoD that they can spare one.

I wouldn't mind Raven Software being given the job, although I have no idea if any of their notable devs are still around.

>The poor balance
Already fixed by modders without changing the game's DNA
>The shit maps
Easily fixed by retuning around more restricted mobility. This isn't even speculation since so many of said maps were literally just remakes of maps from CE/2/3 where they worked fine (Hang Em High, Headlong, and Timberland just off the top of my head).
>Bad vehicles
And this is part of Reach's DNA... how exactly?
>The flawless progression system in Reach is why Infinite - a totally different game made by different devs - had a battle pass, only let you earn XP through challenges, restricted the customization rewards to armor cores, and forced you to buy the color blue... 11 years later
Is this a malfunctioning LLM or are jeets just this bad at critical thinking
>>
>>748267138
It was an intentional decision by Bungie to remove it. It was added back for the TU, but removed shortly after when a bug was discovered. Health packs wouldn't work if you took melee damage to your health. MCC fixed that bug and re-enabled bleedthrough.

Partly due to its wide variety of map sizes fitting different lobby sizes, the fact that larger non-vehicle maps were smaller than in equivalent remakes from later games designed around sprint/enhanced mobility, and frankly, because it realized that the dopamine tap doesn't have to be running at full blast 24/7 because not everyone is a mindraped, dopagenically-downregulated TikTok zoomzoom.

Halo 5 and Infinite have fundamentally excellent core movement and shooting and some of the best weapon sandboxes in the series alongside CE

>>748267869
5 brought back the vertically driven and platforming heavy map design that the franchise abandoned after Halo 2, with 3 heavily toning that element down. It also removed all the CoDshit Halo 4 added.

It (by which I mean the core gameplay and 4v4 map design) very much feels like a game ripped from a timeline where the franchise doubled down on H2's map design and emphasis on advanced tech like button combos, skilljumps etc. It feels more like H2 to me in a lot of ways then H3 ever did.

>>748269067
Halo 2 has the best campaign in the series by a wide margin. Not only is the story clearly and inarguably the best written, but it's also got the most missions that are 8/10's or better (Cairo, Outskirts, Metropolis, Delta Halo, Regret, Gravemind, Uprising, and Great Journey all passing that bar, wheras CE and H3 each only have 3-4 missions that hit that quality bar, and ODST and Reach only have like 2ish that do).

Also the only thing H3 does better then 2 in terms of multiplayer is the BTB maps and Forge existing, if you count that as part of multiplayer. I guess the weapon sandbox is a bit less unbalanced, but the BR only being "extremely dominant" rather then "absolutely fucking busted", and with the non-power non-precision weapons only being a bit better handled then in 2 (where they were all useless outside of the Plasma Pistol) means the weapon balance is still shit so it really doesn't matter.
>>
>>748270042
>Would be a based post if you also said Infinite

I dont like infinite. the weapons feel bad and the vehicles are the worse in the franchise.
it reintroduced many of the same design mistakes that made reach and 3 play poorly or simply boring. over emphasis on ranged combat and maps that reinforce it with insufficient cover and maps with no flow/maneuverability. And a load of inconsistent unreliable weapons. br firingline sims are boring

>>748269067
Reach's campaign was good. its multiplayer was their worst.
Halo 3's campaign was hollow nostalgia bait, it had the 2nd worst multiplayer of their games.

4 and 5 have good campaigns.
4's multiplayer was shit, but it was trying to be reach.
5 is the best multiplayer in the franchise.
I liked its campaign less than 4. the gameplay felt better.
>>
If you don't like reach, you're a dirty dumb nigger
>>
>>748270042
>Halo 5 and Infinite have fundamentally excellent core movement and shooting
Agreed on Infinite's movement and shooting, slightly less so on the sandbox but sure, and that's why I qualified my statement with "basically" - it's other elements of the design that drag Infinite down, particularly things like the UI, most equipment apart from the grappling hook being trivial, the progression/customization being butchered, and so on. It certainly has the best fundamentals of any 343 Halo and it's not even close - which is why the campaign's barebones "open world", the mediocre encounter design, the lack of biomes and repetitive "levels", and the multiplayer's lack of basic features, and so many other things letting it down is so tragic. Bear in mind that I haven't played the campaign since launch and dropped the multiplayer after like three weeks so for all I know the game really is a million times better by now.
By contrast 5's movement may be fine in a vacuum or in comparison to other enhanced mobility shooters, but good enhanced mobility fundamentals make for bad Halo fundamentals.

t. first video game I ever asked my parents to buy for me rather than letting them choose was Halo 2 on OG Xbox age 7 I did not play CE until like a year later and that was the butchered Gearbox PC port. I was a very retarded child.
>>
>>748270042
>Also the only thing H3 does better then 2 in terms of multiplayer is the BTB maps

a huge disagree from me. BTB was my main playlist in halo 2 and Halo 3 fucking butchered it because of how poorly they designed maps and all the anti vehicle weapons they added. And with the BR dominating at all ranges, eventually players settled into halo 3's boring gameplay style and no one played the objective. And BTB got replaced with Invasions in reach because they killed the mode in 3.
>>
>>748271370
>Halo 3
>BR
>dominating all ranges
anon are you fucking high, or maybe getting Mandela'd? H3 BR's projectiles were like the bastard children of a sloth and a snail and moving at a leisurely stroll made you virtually impossible to hit at long range if you did even the slightest bit of jittering. And if you weren't able to play around the enemy's anti-vehicle options on maps like Sandtrap, Rat's Nest, Last Resort, Valhalla, or Avalanche to get like 20 kill streaks fairly often and even a handful of 40-50 streaks or higher (or the corresponding wheelman medals as your gunner does so) then your vehicle play must be genuinely horrendous

The problem with Reach is that it was just a rehash of the older Halos with little to no actual innovation. >the weapons feel bad and the vehicles are the worse in the franchise.

Objectively incorrect.

Infinite has both:

>The second largest weapon sandbox in the series (only behind 5), with it being way ahead of the 3rd and 4th placed titles

>Has the most distinct and unique guns in terms of weapons feeling different within the same niche (IE the BR vs the Commando vs the Stalker Rifle etc feel almost nothing alike, wheras the BR, Carbine, DMR, Needle Rifle, etc in past games are all basically clones: All weapon niches in Infinite are distinct like this), AND Infinite has the most amount of guns with unique gimmicks and mechanics (on top of the typical Needler Supercombine and Plasma Pistol overcharge, H:I has the Ravaeger's charged AoE shot, the Disruptor's DoT effect and shock chaining in general, the Heatwave's different shot patterns, the Cindershot's manual guided mode, the Hydra's lock on, the Mutilator's grav hammer melee and doubleshot mode, and more)

>Has the most actually viable and worth-using guns of any game in the franchise other then maybe pre TU Halo 5: The only guns in Infinite that feel underpowered are the Disruptor and Pulse Carbine, and both still have their uses, wheras basically every non-power non-precision gun in Halo 2, 3, and to a lesser extent Reach and 4 was actively terrible to underpowered.

It's pretty clearly the best weapon sandbox in the franchise by a wide margin. It's got the most useful guns, said guns are the most distinct and mechanically interesting they've ever been, and there's more guns in the game then all but one other Halo title. It's nearly the best of every possible metric.

As far as vehicles, even before they got buffed to be more durable a few years ago, all the vehicles (except the banshee) already took more shots and nades then their H3 counterparts, I went out of my way to test this.

On top of that, the Ghost, Warthog, and Mongoose can turn and strafe way more responsively then in past titles, you're able to manually control your rotation in midair off of jumps, and there's even a feature you can enable to allow you to move the camera and steer the vehicle independently. The warthog chaingun and ghost plasma cannons also melt people

The reason Infinite's vehicles feel bad or underpowered is Infinite's BTB maps have tons of narrow paths and ledges vehicles get stuck on all the time which then leaves you vulnerable, and the game has a lot of dedicated anti vehicle tools like all shock weapons, the skewer, the grapplehook, the PP, the Hydra, etc, which vehicles have no counterplay against

But in terms of just pure durability, damage output, and maneuverability, the Warthog, Ghost, and Mongoose are the best they've ever been, and the tanks are about as good as usual. The banshee does feel like it's made of paper though and DESU I don't even remember how the chopper fares

>4 and 5 have good campaigns
Anon some people call me a 343 shill and even I would never say this. I think 5's campaign is a lot LESS bad then most people say, but it's not good, it, like 4's (unlike the people who claim it's a hidden gem today), are just both mid. They're not terrible, but they're not that good either. I may have come off as kinda lukewarm on CE, 3, Reach, and ODST's campaigns in >>748270042, but when not being compared to god's gift to humanity that is Halo 2, they're still great to excellent single player experiences. There are points in both 4 and 5's campaign where I straight up get bored and quit and it takes me weeks or months to resume, which frankly is actually fairly damning.

>>748270990

I guess you could argue that while the weapon sandbox is well handled within the context of how the weapons preform vs each other, they do create some of the vehicle issues I mentioned in my last post, but I think that's small potatoes next to the sheer overdominance of precision rifles in past Halo games.

I don't know, maybe you could also just not be a fan of the general pace of Infinite's gunfights in terms of TTK? But I think that's not really a sandbox issue, and is more a core combat/pacing problem.

>By contrast 5's movement may be fine in a vacuum or in comparison to other enhanced mobility shooters, but good enhanced mobility fundamentals make for bad Halo fundamentals.

I don't agree, due to the reasons I already outlined in >>748270042: To me the new movement mechanics in 5 enabled the sort of things I loved from Halo 2 that 3 mostly moved away from, in terms of the maps having tons of hidden pathing and trickjumps and platforming, button combos, etc. On top of that Halo has always been relatively distinct vs other FPS franchises in terms of how the longer TTK means that positioning and your choices mid-engagement give you a real opportunity to get a reversal even if the other player spotted and started shooting at you first

The new movement abilities further synergize with that, and in 5, more then perhaps past Halo games, a player with really good movement, and/or map knowledge, and/or button combo tech and knowledge checks (to use FGC terminology) has more tools at their disposal to turn the tides against another player who may be able to aim better then them or got the drop on them first, and I think giving players the ability to specialize in different skillsets is cool and is something, again, that Halo was already more conducive to then other FPS titles

Zanzibar, Coagulation, and Headlong are good, and I remember Containment and maybe Relic being okay, but Burial Grounds and Waterworks were pretty lame IIRC and Terminal had like zero flow to it. Didn't play the Vista maps enough to comment

Meanwhile, Valhalla, Sandtrap, and Last Resort were all as good as H2's best BTB maps or better , and Standoff and Avalanche were also at least as good as Containment and Relic.

I guess having said that, 3's BTB maps don't seem "better" then Halo 2's so much as it cut the fat: There's less of them but all the ones it has match Halo 2's better BTB maps. But I do actually think Halo 3's sandbox and core gameplay makes BTB work better then it did in Halo 2: The vehicles are more satisfying in H3, equipment adds to the experience, and while I trashed Halo 3's weapon sandbox as not really being much better then 2's in >>748270042, I do think in a BTB rather then a 4v4 context, the differences shine more:

You really do notice not being laser beam crossmapped with the BR in Halo 3 compared to how easy that is in H2, and the Plasma Pistol has more to do thanks to the EMP charged shot it gained. People being distracted more in BTB allows you to get more out of the needler (and to an extent, other autos) which is not great in 3 but is at least somehat usable, and i also think the Brute Shot is more intuitive in 3 even if I personally prefer hot it worked in h2.

I said this would be my last post but I see another anon responded to me I didn't notice before

They are, tho.

The way you use the Carbine or DMR or Needle rifle isn't any different from how you use the BR (aside from the BR's burst allowing you to sweep for headshots): You aim, shoot, and use all of them in basically the same way, and in the same situations. They're almost entirely interchangeable, to the point where if Halo 3 shipped without the Carbine or the Beam Rifle, or Spiker or SMG, or even all of them together being missing, the game would not actually play any differently:

It'd be wierd that Jackal Snipers were using BRs and UNSC snipers, and that Brutes were using normal blue Plasma Rifles instead of BPRs or Spikers, but the actual gameplay experience would be more or less the same. A lot of Halo 2 and 3's sandbox only exists to give enemies weapons to hold that make lore sense, Bungie has explicitly talked about how the Carbine and Beam Rifle just exist because they needed the Arbiter to use a precision rifle and sniper weapon and it wouldn't make lore sense for the BR and UNSC sniper to show up in most of his missions

That is NOT the case in Infinite: the mechanical experience of aiming and shooting the BR vs the commander vs the stalker rifle, or the UNSC sniper vs the stalke rifle vs the Skewer, and so on, feels quite different. They also do different (but somewhat overlapping) things. in terms of what they bring to the table for combat and what situations they are useful in. No, the BR and Commando aren't as different as say the BR vs the UNSC sniper, but I would say they're almost as different as the AR is vs the Needler in say Halo 3

(ironically, in Infinite the Needler is LESS unique then it used to be tho, It now homes in so effectively that you don't need to be in a specific sweet spot distance to have the needles track well, you can just kinda hold the trigger down anytime the reticule is red, even in very close range, and the needles will almost always land)

Halo was really only good at 1 (because it was THE console shooter so far ahead of its competition it was barely even competing) and 2, which refined 1. Everything else is just slop. The """""story"""""" has been slop from day one and anyone pretending to actually care about it is just coping under a Stockholm syndrome.

>>748267619
3 was good because of forge but yes the gameplay itself was worse than 2, based take on 5. H5 multiplayer is overhated

>>748261426
>the TU made the multiplayer not complete shit what are you on about
It literally made the DMR the fucking answer to everything, it ruined the sandbox completely.

Calling it, the first Activision Halo isn't going to have any story at all, it's going to be some exclusively multiplayer experience.

They didn't give up with Halo.
They gave up with 343i.
They gave them like a decade and a half to get their act together.
They barely got it working for a time for Infinite. Then they lost the plot again and somehow managed to turn Halo CE into a mid game.

E-Day looks pretty good, and the beta was a lot of fun, but keep in mind the fucking Coalition had a retardgasm after 5, ended support after 18 months, and then released fuck-all for 6 years

yeah, i agree
but the contradiction is that reach's flaws were minor

reach was a destiny alpha and the forerunner (kek) of modern shit halo
>>
>>748280706
They're minor enough that they could be addressed through updates and it wouldn't take much effort at all.
