For the last 20 years I've super earnestly been trying to get into this game and I think right now, reaching the 5th time I've dropped it, I'm going to have to declare it's boring as shit. The game is just not fun. Combat is a joke and basically plays itself. Tank controlled FPS Platforming in 3D where you can't even see your feet feels like ass.

I realized this when I got to the water section. Go through some looong ass hallways and then you're met with this beautiful atmospheric background track and location. Hop down a bunch of platforms and solve the puzzle. Reach and save point, head to the next room and... you need the fucking suit upgrade to progress. Then it all comes crashing down and you realize you need to slowly waddle in water back to the giant cylindrical room, awkwardly navigate platform upon platform that just keep fucking going higher and higher, all the while there's enemies specifically designed to knock you off to the bottom. Again, no enemy in this game is a threat to anything but your time. Finally reach the top but still have to trudge through long ass flooded hallways. Just to get back to where you were. All to know
1. that was a COMPLETE waste of time, I didn't even get an upgrade and still have to go there later anyway
2. Now I have to literally go off on my own volition to another arbitrary direction where the exact same thing can happen.

It's not enjoyable at all. I've beaten a lot of metroid games, I think 5 of them. I enjoy super metroid and it's exploration/backtracking. I don't think I'm some kind of adhd and/or retarded person who can't handle backtracking, I just feel like unlike the other games the backtracking actually showcases how much of the game is ass. If you enjoy the game that's fine, I don't think you're an idiot or anything, but I think you mainly just enjoy the atmosphere and music instead of the actual gameplay
>>
Game is boring overrated trash. If it came out on xbox it would rightfully been declared 5/10 bargain bin bait
>>
>Tank controlled
retard
>>
>>748372760
Uhh yea. Maybe they got rid of them in the remake but my gc copy has them
>>
>>748373125
Huh, really? You can't sidestep in Metroid Prime? I've only played Primehack so I don't know how it controlled on GameCube
>>
>>748372353
That's Metroid's DNA, backtracking. It's love it or hate it.
Maybe it's just not your cup, or it's only fun in 2D than 3D, try the 2D Metroid games.
>>
>>748373656
I know, I said I've beaten like 5. The only 2d ones I haven't beaten are the nes/gameboy ones
>>
>>748373439
technically you can by hitting the lockon button but it's clunky to do so because you have to switch your control scheme for a brief moment AND you can't aim. The game not letting you aim with the c stick is just really odd
>>
>>748374040
wtf are you talking about. you just hold L to lock on and blast away. this is not a game that requires you to aim. it is not an FPS. you sound like you're a complete retard
the game is very easy and like 12 hours long, how have you never been able to clear it
>>
>>748373125
tank controls take 2 analog sticks, dumbass
>>
>>748374040
>technically you can by hitting the lockon button
are you fucking fighting without lockon
>>
>>748374882
>this is not a game that requires you to aim. it is not an FPS
hahahaha tendies are amaizng
>>
>>748374882
>>748375015
are you guys just random people butting in mid convo? I talked about tank controls relative to platforming. left and right turn your character while the stick moves you forward and backwards. This is always what I've known tank controls to be, since the ps1 era. I have no clue what you're talking about with the two stick requirement
>>748375183
no, I'm not. try reading.
>>
>>748375394
>eft and right turn your character while the stick moves you forward and backwards.
You have not played a game with tank controls.
>>
>>748375394
>left and right turn your character while the stick moves you forward and backwards
except when you're in combat, since you're locked on. then left and right are used to strafe.
honestly i have no idea what you are complaining about. this game is piss easy and fun to explore.
>>
>>748375394
don't worry about those retards, Prime absolutely has tank controls, i particularly have no idea what that 2 stick anon is talking about, tank controls are primarily found in games from an era before controllers had a second stick, hell you don't even need one stick for them, a pad works just fine for tank controls.
>>
>>748375573
You are also retarded
>>
>>748372353
I thought it was fun but couldn't finish, basically got towards the end. Didn't like backtracking. In a way it reminded me of GTA in how archaic their game design is. I did enjoy and finish MP4 but it still felt old in design. I'd rather see Retro work a new IP shooter honestly
>>
>>748372353
>Combat is a joke and basically plays itself
Tell me about it, I can just shoot randomly and all my shots automatically track and hit every single enemy onscreen no matter what, my shots even curve around obstacles and go for the weak points. If the enemy needs something other than beams or missiles I drop a bomb and every enemy visible pops no matter the distance. The most automatic self-playing game I've ever played.
>>
>>748375719
>reminded me of GTA in how archaic their game design is
>MP4 but it still felt old in design
zooms say this about every fucking non-gacha game
every single one
>ahh its just so antiquated this design uhh its just so ick and outdated
>>
>>748375573
Resident Evil has tank controls. Prime does not.
>>
>>748375446
Enlighten me with whatever game you think defines tank controls. If I google tank controls it's just gonna bring up resident evil and silent hill which controls exactly the way I described it
>>748375506
I don't specifically like navigating around my environment with tank controls where I can't even look around easily, you need to backtrack through these areas and you're forced to see the same viewpoint every time unless you want to awkwardly freeze in place and slowly nag the camera around. It's really not a skill problem and has zero to do with combat, if you didn't even play the game I played (you played primehack or whatever) I don't know why you're up in arms about this
>>
>>748375851
Metroid is very different from average shooters though. You have a super suit and powers which already makes it different from the average shooting game where you're just... a normal dude with an M4. There's literally 1 billion of those games so they never had to solve any issues.
>>
>>748375883
>Resident Evil has tank controls. Prime does too
FTFY
>>
>>748376125
What is your definition of tank controls?
>>
>>748372353
>Again, no enemy in this game is a threat to anything but your time.
how does literally any game punish literally anyone for doing anything wrong other than making you ultimately "waste time" in an effort of trial and error?
>>
I beat the gamecube version of prime a month or 2 ago and it absolutely does have tank controls. anon is just gaslighting people and baiting. to be fair it is pretty good bait.
>>
>>748375015
>tank controls take 2 analog sticks, dumbass
how can you be so confidently incorrect and then call someone else a dumbass?
>>
I had absolutely no problems with the controls, why are today's children and "gamers" so incapable of playing games?
>>
>>748375883
NTA but I really want to get to the bottom of this now. I played Primehack. When I pressed A or D, did that make Samus sidestep? Was that a mechanic specifically modded in by the Primehack team and you couldn't do that on GameCube/Wii? Or could you not sidestep even in Primehack and I just never thought about it?
>>
>>748376226
When you press up or down, your character walks forward or backward. When you press left or right, your character spins to the left or right.

That's not "my definition", that's THE definition. RE4 and Metroid Prime have the same controls. The only difference that Prime lets you strafe but ONLY in aiming mode.
>>
>>748376226
controls where your primary movement inputs are "move forward", "move backwards", "rotate left", and "rotate right"
>>
>>748376443
I think I could make a post with a png of a game and just type
>its too easy
and it would still be flooded with 40 year old men telling me how I got filtered
>>
>>748376518
This, Prime 1 and 2 on GC control like RE4 but in first person of course
>>
>>748376447
In the console games when you're locked on you press left/right + jump to sidestep and you can step rings around enemies by repeatedly doing it.
>>
I'm curious if tendies literally think tank controls is when you control a tank, like they have zero concept of abstraction and analogies. I need an explanation for the twin stick thing
>>
>>748375963
but you can look around easily. left and right turns the camera left and right. if you need to look up and down, you can just hold R.
i'm not understanding what the problem is. there isn't any room in the game where these controls are not sufficient, they designed the entire game around them.
>>
So Doom, Halo, Wolfenstein, etc are all tank controller games, too?
>>
>>748376869
What about the Sonies and Micros who also think tank controls = steering a tank?
>>
>>748376869
they don't play FPS so they don't understand how its supposed to work, and when you try to point this out they act like Prime isn't a FPS
even on release over 20 fucking years ago it was like this
Nintendo fans are just straight up ignorant and retarded because they play so few games
>>
>>748376925
Doom and Wolfenstein yes
The tanks in halo have tank control too
>>
>>748376870
And that's why the Prime games are faggot tranny garbage for manchildren.
>>
ok
>>
>>748376870
>if you need to look up and down, you can just hold R.
You don't see how fucked up that is in a game like this? You should be able to look around whenever you want. Its so slow and shitty.
>>
>>748377120
>You don't see how fucked up that is in a game like this?
the entire game was designed specifically for this control scheme, rather than fucked up it's actually perfect
>You should be able to look around whenever you want.
you can
>Its so slow and shitty.
a meaningless statement. the game is easy and the controls are sufficient in every single room. you never have to do anything that the controller or control scheme do not allow.
it sounds like you are simply retarded in the brain. it's okay, a lot of people are. you can probably still beat the game though since it's so easy like i said.
>>
>>748377120
NTA I also do not like the original controls and have always preferred the trilogy motion controls or the remastered's twinstick. The original game was made in an era when console fps controls were not set in stone yet so they made a game based around the tank style controls they went with
>>
>>748377232
You are so close to realizing they had to dumb down the entire game to tendie's first Fisher Price Shooter because the controls are entirely inadequate
>>
>>748376870
tank controlled 3d platforming is awkward. I never said it was hard, or awful, or unplayable. But it's a lot of ghe game and unenjoyable. I'm not able to even look at the ground when I jump on platforms which feels weird. Again aiming is slow as fuck combined with the fact you need to go stationary to do it so when the fuck are you going to do it? You can't even experience more of your surroundings every backtrack because you're just looking at the same set viewpoint the game gives you. You're just being disingenuous if you think these aren't valid complaints, if they were good game mechanics literally any other series would have copied them instead of moving to two sticks for aiming and moving
>>
>>748377402
but that's what the game is. i still have absolutely no idea what you're having trouble with. it sounds like you want to play a different game and you're upset that this game isn't the other game that you want to play. you may be autistic.
>>
>>748377032
The whole fucking POINT of Doom is strafing around enemies, idiot. But you did have to hold down alt to get the arrow keys to sidestep instead of look around in the original version (this was changed to WASD + mouse in modern versions), which is arguably comparable to lock-on strafing in Metroid Prime
>>
>>748377482
>I'm not able to even look at the ground when I jump on platforms which feels weird.
yes you are. hold R to look at the ground, hold L to lock on.
you may be autistic OP. i'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you this. you are allowed to play a different game.
>>
>>748376925
>Halo
Press left. Character strafes left.
>Doom1, Wolf3D, Prime, RE4, Tomb Raider
Press left. Character rotates anti-clockwise.
>>
>>748377558
at this point I genuinely don't think you played the game so I don't care to argue with you.
>>
>>748377402
NTA again but this is also a reductive way to look at it. Prime's strength is in the slow methodical exploration which the original tank controls certainly complement even if I don't like using them. You're meant to be a slow armored tank to an extent. You stop look around and scan things to learn lore and ecological details while taking in the atmosphere rather than bunnyhopping through levels at mach speed. I suggest using the newer controls though if you can't stand the tank ones. That's what I do on all my playthroughs now
>>
>>748377484
Its a mediocre FPS with awful controls that gets a halo effect from being on a nintendo console. If it was on xbox or ps2 it would have been ravaged in the reviews.
>>
>>748377495
>Strafing around
>When you have to pick between moving sideways or turning the camera and can't do both
So it is tank control and saying it doesn't because someone somewhere patched it is irrelevant otherwise it means no games have tank controls
>>
>>748377627
you are mistaken about how the controls work, i know what they are by heart, but i'm the one who hasn't played the game? are you sure about that
>>
>>748377482
>I never said it was hard, or awful, or unplayable.
That's true, you actually haven't said anything at all yet
>You can't even experience more of your surroundings every backtrack because you're just looking at the same set viewpoint the game gives you.
lol he doesn't know you can hold R to look around
>>
>>748377684
It's not a very good fps but neither are 2D metroids very good platformers. Because those are not what these games try to be. They're games about exploration and immersive alien worlds first and foremost and to this day the only games to do this kinda first person sci-fi immersive exploration are basically just the prime games
>>
I love it when /v/irgins create entire universes in their heads solely to claim their made-up fantasies about why a game was made the way it was then vehemently attack anyone who doesn't agree with their conspiracies. Especially when it involves anything Nintendo, a company that for some reason sends this place into absolute womanly hysterics of rage.
>>
>>748378041
it sounds like you have ulterior motives for this thread OP
that would explain why everything you're complaining about turned out to be demonstrably false
you probably never even played the game lol
>>
It's insane how much arguing online is just people pretending to not know what you're pointing out
>>
>>748378182
are you embarrassed that you accidentally said things about the game which were obviously not true and inadvertently revealed that you actually never played it
>>
>>748372353
Thank you for validating my opinions anon.

I do like Echoes though.
>>
snoys and steamies are losing their fucking mind that prime 4 is the best fps in the last 5 years and it's exclusive to nintendo. If tou're wondering why all of these dogshitters are mad at prime 1 and getting filtered thats why

>>

You have two sticks.
Push both forward to go forward.
Push both backwards to go in reverse.
Push one forward and one not to turn in that direction.
Push one forward and one in reverse to rapidly spin in that direction.

This is how tanks are controlled. This is tank controls.

Prime series defo is pretty slow, also combat is a bit...aimbotty? You can easily, and I mean, EASILY, see how much of the game(s) is designed for pve combat with the sequel's janky multiplayer mode, having two players interact with Lock-On aim is basically just strafe and button spam, Metroid Prime Remastered fixes the tank control with standard fps dual analog sticks, im a fan of the Wii's pointer aim, Samus sheds her tetanus.

Its probably the fact the fastest mode of transport in the first game is the Boost Ball, i wish they could have figured out the speed booster in Prime... also wait till you get to the endgame lol! For you, i think something more closed in like Fusion, or more free like Super if you have skills.
>>
>>748372353
The white door outside the ice beam room, that leads down into the sunken frigate is just a prank, Bro
>>
>>748382328
Yea that part is just fucking stupid. I think the only other time I've been hit with some bullshit like that was in the 2nd gba castlevania game where you just have these really windy tedious hallways that go on and on in a single line just to reach a locked door
>>
>>748382683
I think every Metroid game had something like this, usually there's a concession though. In Prime's case even if you suffer through it you can leave with an energy tank at least. Still sucks though, lol.

I also think Metroid Prime is somewhat boring, but I think it's a more respectable interpretation of Metroid than MercurySteam's. I don't enjoy playing it more than SR or Dread but I do find it a lot more interesting. I think it has a better understanding of Metroid's appeal in terms of what it's trying to accomplish. I've never played Prime 2 or Prime 3, though.

>Controls like shit

>Multiple beams and various scans is just Simon Says gameplay, there's nothing engaging about it
>Actively wastes your time with the backtracking more than any other Metroid game
>Endgame artifact hunt can fuck off
>The most useless map and elevators ever put into a video game

Coming from the 2D Metroid games, it's such a step down that you have to wonder how it managed to get 4 games. People genuinely excused the shit gameplay because of fancy graphics and atmosphere.
>>
>>748372353
Oof, yeah stumbling into the water area without the gravity suit is awful.
>>
>>748386898
The fact there's an ice beam door that takes you straight there and all it does is lock you in a half-hour of murky wet hell is the biggest blemish on the game. The entire flow of the map is pushing you into wrecked ship, on top of the fact wrecked ship is where you got gravity suit in Super Metroid so as a motif a player feels justified in going down when it sucks and going up when it doesn't. Nope, pity e-tank, have fun with tentacles.

prime's control scheme makes sense for the focus of the game on first person platforming, hard lock on combat and nintendo's design philosophy. being able to steer jumps with just a single stick and keep your thumb on the A button was just the path of least resistance there.
