SMT and Persona work well in that regard since you fuse new shit every few levels and get to experiment with loads of abilities, instead of having to grind up similarly-ish jobs.

>>748448669This is precisely why I and many others thought Metaphor's job system take was a lot better than it is in the average final fantasy, because you get both a lot of shit to work with and you still have to work within limitations, meaning in a team that you wanted to be mostly physical attackers, you're a lot more likely to run an AOE damage dealer and a single target damage dealer on two separate characters, and if you didn't and wanted to keep it all on one person your trade-off was not getting to take advantage of a passive you want to maximize your damage output. SMT had a problem with every demon being the same shit and their solution was to put in a ton of wild passive abilities a handful of which were way more viable than most others and Persona had a problem where customizing your party beyond the protagonist at all was a massive chore. Metaphor is looking for a middle ground for both of these, and even when it came to the royal archetypes endgame there were 3 different ways of setting just those up on your damage dealers, and there's a fourth separate ultra OP one you could get for the MC specifically, and by then the game also gives you strong passive options that let you take setups that might've fallen off hours ago and make them relevant endgame again if you didn't want to run the royal archetypes at all, which I think is the really big thing that SMTVV missed. I think the main advantage FF (or really more Bravely Default because they haven't had a decent job system since) has is actually with the equipment more than anything really to do with the job system because the level of impact 2h, 1h, dual wield has is still pretty significant, but I wouldn't trade how Metaphor structured the job system for that I don't think.

Metaphor could've been a great game but it did some things wrong. The archetypes were pretty poorly implemented, some take forever to unlock and they take even longer to upgrade, not to mention that every character has an "ultimate" archetype which renders the rest obsolete which kind of forces you to stick to them if you want to beat the hardest bosses, also, the worst part is that they don't carry over to NG+ so you have to do all the social links all over to unlock them which wastes a lot of game time which is also bad because you don't have too much free time to do anything else other than visiting those boring and repetitive dungeons, and if you visit one while underleveled and you can't beat the boss, well, tough shit, you'll have to leave and try again another day. The combat was pretty good and the difficulty was appropriate at least.
