https://automaton-media.com/en/news/danganronpa-creator-kazutaka-kodaka-considers-ultimate-despair-girls-the-pinnacle-of-his-writing-i-will-never-be-able-to-write-another-scenario-that-surpasses-it/

>Commemorating the anniversary of 'Ultra Despair Girls', Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka took to X to talk about what it looked like developing the title back in the day.

>Kodaka says that, in a sense, he considers himself to have reached a pinnacle with Ultra Despair Girls, as he will “never be able to write another scenario that surpasses it.” (https://x.com/kazkodaka/status/2103286335633236479)

>Apparently, the development process itself was also painstakingly difficult, especially when it came to designing the game’s event cutscenes. According to Kodaka, he and a few other developers would pull all-nighters to create the scenes. A lot of the times, the program they used for creating the event scenes would crash, causing hours of work to go down the drain.

>Kodaka wasn’t quite fond of staying overnight at the office (which was not an uncommon practice for many developers back in the day, though it was most prominent during the late 90s and early 00s), so he would usually take a taxi home at his own expense (public transport in Japan usually doesn’t operate past midnight), take a nap, and go back to work.

>However, he states that he made this game with the firm intention to make players “absolutely cry through experiencing the relationship between Komaru and Fukawa,” which could be a big reason why he went all in on developing it.

>As he explained in one of his previous interviews, Kodaka doesn’t consider his sad scenes complete until they actually make him cry. “When I test play the game and a tear softly falls down my cheek, that’s when I consider it finished. This is an absolute for me. […] If I’m unable to cry, I switch back to the creator’s perspective and try to think about what went wrong.”

He's right.

apologize
>>
>>748431234
I'm not reading all that but he's mostly right.
Relatives of the original Danganronpa cast showing up for 10 seconds then dying was a little weak but outside of that it's paced so much better than basically anything else, including short stuff like Death Come True.

Shame the game itself is an atrocious chore to go through. Goated music, fun setting and characters but absolutely not worth the trash moment to moment gameplay, I really wish it was closer to a VN like the other danganronpa games.
>>
>>748432106
I thought it was fine, honestly, just a cheap RE4 like. Levels are legit like 20 seconds long with 5 enemies, just mow right through them with headshots.
Didn't even touch the fujo girls mode.

Kodaka's unironically the worst writer I've ever experienced in any form of media. How anyone could possibly enjoy his work for reasons outside shit-posting is beyond me.

not hard but just annoying to play

Sorry but I can't participate in these threads or I'll get spoiled. I only played the first game.
>>
>>748431234
If that's what a writer considers the pinnacle of their writing, that's pretty depressing.
That'd be like citing the contents of your trash can as the peak of your creative output.

>>748433204
I think he’s very entertaining. I was not bored with any of these games them being visual novels

Ishimaru's development was that he couldn't cope. It's a tragedy at the end of the day and there are naturally characters who wouldn't turn out fine and there are even others who could turn out fine but but still victims like Chihiro.

>>
>>748431234
Monaca and Nagisa are good characters and I found the story reasonably enjoyable, but it wasn't anything special.
>However, he states that he made this game with the firm intention to make players “absolutely cry through experiencing the relationship between Komaru and Fukawa"
I don't get that at all. I shed a fair amount of bodily fluids over Komaru, but it wasn't tears. And Toko is just kind of ridiculous. Who is crying over them or their relationship?
>>
>>748433204
No, he isn't. Even if it's subjectively repulsive to you, you will lose this argument because Danganronpa at its worst is nowhere near as bad as so much shit today.

I shit on him because I enjoy his work and want him to evolve past the flaws I see. I see a man who loves commenting and parodying the zeitgeist of gaming and anime culture, clearly the culture he's planted his stake in and became a creative for. He clearly wants to make statements and be evocative/provocative but he also wants to have the fun of creating a spectacle separate as well. He's allowed to make the vidya equivalent of a pulp fiction for a cheap rollercoaster alike thrill ride of shock and twists, as many have said he accomplishes that and is quite entertaining in doing it. No, it's not the highest art, and I have mixed feelings on how he "has his cake and eats it too" with both pointing out how myopic franchises are for the sake of doing lewd fanservice ala carts before a horse and then do shit like >>748431945 or the bath scenes.
Let's make one thing clear, yes you can do a lot of media depiction and social interactions with youth differently in Japan than you can in the west, but a huge majority of people still find it unsavory, uncouth, and wrong over there as well. When I saw >>748432894 >>748433634 this felt more like Kodaka's parody mode of making him sound retarded and painting him as a creep even in Japanese sensibility contexts. Maybe I'm mistaken, but the man IS capable of being multidimensional, so when either he writes some very two dimensional characters Teruteru, Peko, Junko, or half the v3 cast you either see him wanting and aiming for a 2d character and wonder if he really should try harder specifically there. I understand a major plot point of v3 is how two dimensional the cast is, but that seems like convenient writing justifying laziness more than an awe-striking revelation that makes it all come together.

I like it a lot because it doesn't follow the class trial formula, so the storytelling is inherently less repetitive. Even the gameplay, which isn't great, at least has some attempt at variation by introducing new enemy types and puzzle gimmicks as you progress
