>>748466000Graphics don't matter much if you can make fun games that look good anyway. Most major games on other platforms are ashamed of being video games, and try to look like movies as a result. But that's usually a waste of effort and money that also traps you into limiting your gameplay options. You have to painstakingly avoid clipping, unnatural animations and create a billion highly detailed models and textures for shit that you're not even supposed to pay attention to. A sandwich in the background needs to have a realistic crumb texture on the bread and be a physics object that can be split into multiple pieces. Because some dipshit will zoom in on it and call it lazy if you can't see every pore, and shooting it just leaves a regular bullet hole decal on the object. It creates a ton of mindless busywork that costs money and doesn't actually make the game any better. If the game is a little stylized, no one will complain if the sandwich is kind of low poly and has a simple texture, or if it's just part of the environment. They also won't complain if you use that same "table with sandwich" object multiple times in the same place. But as soon as you sell a game on realism, you're beholden to the standard of the prettiest most refined thing in the whole game. Anything that isn't nearly as good is a failure or an oversight that detracts from the quality of the game. But Nintendo games stopped being about that nearly 25 years ago. They'd do as much as the hardware was capable of, but put most of their effort into the parts that matter most in order to keep budgets down and compete on quality and diversity of offerings rather than the visual spectacle of increasingly more watered down games that need to cast a wider and wider net in order to make money.
They tapped into the pedo market
They make cheap lazy games with no effort like OoT remake
>>748466000REAL ANSWER: They had first mover advantage after the (first) video game crash.
Nobody actually gives a fuck about specs aside from turboautists who treat vidya hardware like cars.
>>748466000Because a Nissan or A Ford will get you to the same place a BMW will.
>>748466000advances in 3d graphics haven't enabled new gameplay, just lit money on fire trying to feed to gpu monsternintendo innovates (and the industry follows) while keeping dev costs down
>>748466000They got really fucking lucky with the wii otherwise their portables have always sold consistently great. And with portable game consoles graphical expectations are lowered. The convenience outweighs the negatives. In fact a portable console was a dream device for a lot of people for decades.
It's because artstyle and gameplay > graphical fidelity. Thanks for asking.
That's because they don't need it. Nintendo are basic toys for children and manchildren.
>>748466000No way the PS2 was stronger than the cube
>>748466000I think the PS2 being twice as high as the XBOX in the first chart should tell you something about how reflective it is of actual real-world performance
>>748466000>DespiteIt's literally been their driving force for the last 40 fucking yearsNice trips fag
>>748466000Higher graphical fidelity come with development costs that can't reasonably be recouped by sales revenue. Nintendo never made a huge loss on any of their games even when they didn't sell well, not at the same level of MS or Sony.
>>748466000People who buy nintendo products fall into one of two categories; they’re either total fanboys who buy every game and accessory and play their games religiously, or normies who play games like mario party with their friends or family once in a while. The average gamer is beating a game once or twice and probably never playing it again. Nintendo fans are probably the only group actively buying a console solely for games like pokemon or smash. Graphics and online gameplay don’t matter much when you’ve got a die hard base that can’t play your games anywhere else. It’s like being a crack dealer and saying you’re a great salesman, you’re selling a product that people are addicted to and can’t stop using. Why would they ever change that business model for people who aren’t already addicted?
>>748466000Having consistant release of exclusives >>> meaningless graphicsfagging leading to games costing hundreds of millions to make over decades.
>>748466912Yes Nintendo learned during the Gamecube days that graphics and power didn't matter as much as they thought.
>>748466000Because technologu and graphics never matered in videogames.>>748466912>Graphics don't matter much if you can make fun games that look good anyway./thread
>>748466000>raw untextured unlit polygons being a relevant benchark for actual ingame graphicsXbox specifically feature programmable shaders which allowed for far more advanced graphics than the PS2, comparing raw to raw is completely pointless when the hardware was designed for so much more. The Gamecube and the PS2 both featured fixed function graphics with limited manipulation for per vertex effects via the PS2's dedicated vertex processor whereas the gamecubes GPU had itself limited programmable shaders but not a standardized model like the Xbox, this could perform both per pixel and per vertex effects. While the PS2 was capable of a lot of raw triangles it couldn't do as much as the gamecube in an actual in game scene due to lighting and texturing, games like Starfox Adventures, effectively a gen 1 Gamecube game feature all kinds of advanced shader effects all at the same time, effects you where you would sparingly see one used in a PS2 game let alone a myriad of them all at once, and games like the Rogue Squadron titles featured absolutely absurd amounts of geometry on screen at any given time, far more than what you would see on a PS2.Raw comparisons don't matter because a game scene is far more complex than a benchmark checking one thing.
>>748468085>no no we had one system we said was better and repeated that lie you can't destroy itit was crippled because of the dev kit too, you had to use nintendo's dev tools and apis, period, with ps2 they gave you like a compiler and a couple demo games and you had to make your own games making software, it's why all the tendie titles look the same and ps2 games are wildly different looking
>>7484660001. Strong brand loyalty and recognition, especially among the aging market2. Dominates the Japanese market thanks to the handhelds. Convenience and portability is in high demand due to travel culture and work commutes3. Toys, trading cards, and other forms of merchandising are also very lucrative to them4. Has a lot more approachable games when compared to their competitors 5. Not blowing budgets trying to make risky AAA blockbusters with ever increasing expensive hardware demands
>>748466000That's a meme, PS2 had absurd FP performance due to the VUs, but that doesn't translate to real world gaming performance. Nor does unshaded polygon rate. In reality the GC would edge it slight in GPU and destroy it in CPU, and the Xbox would just rape both in anything but edge scenarios like absurd particle effects, like the classic MGS2 rain, which made the PS2's VUs and the absurd GS bandwith shine.
>>748471556If GC didn't have the stupid mini DVD, it would be undisputably a better machine. But Nintendo was being Nintendo.
>>748469552WHat games on the Gamecube look better than GOW2 or other of the best graphically on the PS2?

>>748467023OoT remake sucks specifically because it's probably the mot un-Nintendo thing they've ever done. Just pure cancerous industry trend chasing.
I enjoyed the Wii U more than the Switch.

>>748466912And of top of that, it doesn't take an entire chunk of one's childhood, like your entire middle school and high school combined, to see 1 game
On a practocal level there was really not that much difference between games on ps2 and Gamecube. The power difference between them wasnt really enough to be noticeable for either. The Gamecube not have dvds was a bigger issue due to the space requirements for some 3rd party games.
>>748474196>they're a dedicated IP companyftfy
>>748468085it wasn't, and nobody contests thissynthetic benchmarks aren't software performance
>>748474394>the private company aggressively protects their IPthat's your best attempt at making nintendo seem comparably bad to sony and microsoft.
>>748466000they make good games. that's literally all it takes.sony out here spending 300 million dollars making wolverine's asscheeks have realistically rendered sweat for a game that became the laughing stock of the industry. all that extra technology the ps5 has, means fuckin nothing if the game is stupid, unfun, and retarded.
>>748466000That's bullshit, Nintendo had competitive or even better hardware up to Wii, GC included. Then they found out they can just focus on their main IPs.
>>748466000Games.
>>748474336https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_MBy3MX2nIgame cube was noticeably better. also, the loading times were lesser.
>>748474998>Then they found out they can just focus on their main IPs.then their research and development fund went to almost zero after the two biggest blunders in video gaming history: - staying with cartridge instead of adopting the cdrom- going with proprietary disc format instead of dvd romps2 being also a dvd player was an huge advantage over the game cube.
>>748474998>Nintendo had competitive or even better hardwareno no nonot even in the 8-bit or 16-bit eras
>>748475287Are you retarded? Even though the hardware is weak, their R&D didn't disappear, or do you really think bringing motion controls to vidya in the early 2000s was trivial? Or making a console tier, tablet form-factor console, that doesn't shit itself under load was also easy?>muh PS2 DVD playernvm, that answers it. You are just a zoomer that get your opinions from big youtubers
>>748475435MS released later, NES was on par or better with everything else and MD's blast processing was a meme, they were pretty close in every aspect + SNES had better audio capabilities.
>>748475173Not even a PS2 defender, but RE4 is such a retarded example that people keep bringing up. The game wasn't even supposed to release on PS2, the port was rushed and they still had to add more content to make up for the re-release. It's disingenuous as comparing GC NFS to PS2 NFS.
>>748476614game cube was for kids, even the disc size was made for a kid hand. adults wanted the console-dvd player combo. here in france, gta3 was packaged with pulp fiction, it was a huge success. you would have never seen that on game cube. nintendo lost its adult player base with the game cube, not the wii.
Nintendo's mid hardware is precisely why they're so successful. They make cheaper hardware for a demographic (families) that are looking to spend less. It helps that kids won't give a shit about the graphics being a generation behind. That coupled with the fact they make actually good games is what helps them succeed. They've been doing this for decades, it just wasn't until the Wii thst they went all in with it
>>748476915>the port was rushedthe port was so rushed that they took time to make new models with less polygons and and textures with less resolution but sure bro.
>>748466000The ONE time they actually released superior technology, people literally went and made up bullshit about the health impact of seeing 3D objects, EVERYONE believed it automatically, and it tanked the sales to the point where they released one without the console's main selling feature.Cursed shit
>>748466000I don't think this graph is accurate because PS2 games look and run like complete ass compared to the Xbox and Gamecube versions. Very few PS2 games are leaps and bounds ahead of what the other consoles could visually offer, and those were exclusives where the developer had access to Sony's code libraries, and Sony only gave those out to their top partners in exchange for guaranteed exclusivity.
>>748475287>- staying with cartridge instead of adopting the cdromthis ended up being a good thing in the long run
>>748476825These consoles are all part of the same generation. Nintendo jumped the gun, tryna get frst mover advantage.
>>748477950And now the industry is telling stereoscopic 3D back to us in the form of 4000-dollar bricks you put on your face.

>>748478658You're the experts.Your investors don't know anything about videogames or videogame development. You know that attitude that most game companies these days have towards their customers where they act like they're teachers talking to a bunch of unruly children who need to be educated? Aim that at the investors with a bit less arrogance. The thing that they need to learn is who your customers are, what they want, and what must be done to get it to them.>What are you doing about problematic content like sex and violence in videogames?Amping it up so that our mostly male customer base will buy them.
>>748466000You may have heard about this little event called the video game industry crash, and a little known company that revived the industry afterward. They raised a generation of people who are 30-40 now, and are more loyal to the company than they are to their own flesh and blood, proving once and for all that bread and circuses are supreme.
Turns out if you don't stumble like a retard financially, you don't put yourself into a situation where your company is riding on bankruptcy or relevancy because you're caring about the long term.
>>748466000they still actually make games. games for faggots but that's more than i can say for the other consoles.
